There are so many wonderful things in history we don't have full/good records of bc people just didn't record it/write it down. But, I'll be honest, if you ask me what jazz I usually listen to, it IS the original jazz tunes. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy other forms of it as well.

As someone who loves country music among other genres, I think personally, PERSONALLY, that the best country was the 80s about earlier. My favorites are John Denver, Johnny Cash, and that era. @gavincrockett95212 сағат бұрын
As a country fan, country fans have been saying “I like the old stuff” since there barely was any old stuff. It’s practically a tradition at this point! There’s plenty of bad country music from the era of those classic country legends, it was just forgettable and thus soon forgotten. Not to muddy your point, but electric guitars have been a major feature in country music since the 50s. I recommend looking into Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens, and Gary Stewart for some great examples. Also, 70s country rock (Flying Burrito Brothers, Cowboy, Danny O’Keefe) seems like it might be your jam. Welcome to the rabbit hole, my friend, there’s some amazing art ahead of you.
@Aros434 минут бұрын
Probably because back then country had actual social commentary or narrative value like how 9 to 5 by Dolly was pretty critical of capitalism and workers exploitation and Johny Cash’s Folson Prison Blues was about bringing awareness to how bad our prison system is. Now a days Country has the same old lyrics and melody and tend to really lean into that conservative/republican aesthetic that gives it a bad name. At least thats my opinion

Metalhead here, I'd like to take this chance to explain metal to people who may be interested or want to get into it, In terms of genres and how to identify them you need to focus on the main sound, average heavy metal is very light and often has a huge focus in terms of rock so if you don't see any drastic changes within the music and it just sounds like harder rock it's most likely heavy metal, doom metal is very noticeable as it takes a focus onto being incredibly slow and atmospheric on a focus of sounding evil, thrash metal often has a focus on speed so if you listen to the music and it seems very fast and the singer is singing fast then it's most likely thrash, early death metal has huge inspirations to thrash but you can often tell it's death metal from it's punchier sound, when death metal had fully developed the best way to separate it from other metal genres is to focus on the tone and the singer cause often the singer in death metal will focus on making their voice sound low and there's often a lot more power chords from guitar and you can tell from how the guitar sounds that it focuses on punchyness in order to get that specific sound and the drums in death metal are often blast beats, grindcore is sort of a mix between metal and punkish and its often very fast but unlike thrash this genre has a lot more blast beats. Slam metal is where you'll mostly find those "illegible" band logos and is often just death metal but evolved as they focus on the heaviness of the sounds so you'll hear the vocalist do sounds that don't even sound human, you'll hear a lot of harmonica and palms muted from the guitar and while most of the drums are blasts beats there are slow parts, power metal is just fantasy and dragons basically, groove metal is very weird but as the name explains very groovy as there are often very unique riffs and they often focus on being on the beat more then any other genre, prog metal is very experimental as there are often changes in the time signature and the guitarists like to mess around a lot and make incredibly unique riffs, djent isn't a genre, metalcore is weird, during the early 2000s there was a lot of focus on harmony and a lot of people may mistake it for emo music, nowadays it sort of focuses on being a lot similar to pop while also using a lot of synths and simple guitar riffs. Deathcore is literally just metal core if it was a mix between death and slam, glam metal is very 80s, just think a lot of hairspray and rock'n'roll and you've basically gotten glamrock down, stoner metal is very similar to doom however it focuses on being very low and slow and can be described as stoning music but for metal, sludge is very in between thrash and death, it's like diet death in a way but still contains some of the heavyness of death but also mixed themes of doom metal, black metal is basically death metal if it was inverted except for the drum part, the singers in black often use a shreaking sound instead of the usual growls and the guitar tone feels very light and lacks a lot of punchyness while focusing on power chords for guitar riffs, nu metal is basically hip-hop mixed with metal or hard rock
@Reaper0-vl5gb22 сағат бұрын
As for reading slam logos you often wanna try to make out shapes of letters within the logo that are distorted, and often there's a pattern to reading them for example the pattern for facelift deformation is word in the middle curving down up down, and word at the bottom curving up down up with the first letter of the second word being in front of the first letter of the first word

As a metal fan, I hate elitism. In the modern metal scene, bands like Sleep Token, Bad Omens, Bring Me The Horizon, and many more are quite popular, and people are called posers for liking them rather than bands like Cut My Neck or Dead Toddler Syndrome or something. There are a lot of chill people in the metal scene depending on the sub genre, and in my favorite genres, mainly modern metalcore, it is easy enough to find out the assholes and just avoid them because the chill people also happen to make the best music.

@WallJumpGames21 сағат бұрын
I really enjoy musicals, but I only enjoy them ON STAGE. Beetlejuice is one of, if not my favourite plays I've ever scene, but I would never listen to the music on it's own (anymore) because it's not designed for that context. I mean tbf a lot of musicals are kind of shit or corny, I'm not a musical hater but I do find it a bit annoying when people's taste in music boils down to musical songs because like, they should listen to the artists who feature on Warriors instead of Warriors. ALSO, I don't think Fall Out Boy and musicals are as far apart as you think, I can't put my finger on why but the overlap between those 2 is quite large in my experience.

As someone who listens mostly to punk and loves it, yeah, it’s complicated, no, we’re not all jerks, and yes, there absolutely are still political messages (politics are a big part of punk culture, hence the political patches like anarchism symbols on punk clothing). If you want a modern example of political punk music One Nation by Pinkshift is great. (Pinkshift is great in general). I mostly say it’s complicated because there all a lot of sub-genres (pop punk, punk rock, folk punk, etc.), but, generally, punk music is just energetic, emotional, and a bit distasteful (not in a negative way, cause that’s the point). Again, I love punk, but the whole point of a lot of punk music is being explicit to address issues that people don’t want to address because it makes them uncomfortable (ex: first verse of Hated by Yungblud). Most punks I’ve seen aren’t jerks (if they understand the core values) because punk culture has a big emphasis on authenticity, respect, and integrity (at least from my viewpoint). Core values are anti-corporation, anti-capitalist, anti-conformity, (usually anti-gov), pro-rights and liberation, and just generally being yourself. Everyone has their own definition of being punk though cause there is a weird paradox about putting an anti-conformity group in a box (hence conforming it to a single notion). To put it in a box, it’s a bunch of people that thought ‘You know, I don’t care about what society says, I’m gonna dress how I think looks cool and talk about the things I think are important.’

Metal fan here. I really don’t care about the differentiation between metal sub-genres. A lot of the time there are bands that put out music that feels like it doesn’t fit into any specific sub-genre. One of my favorite bands is We Came As Romans, and their first two albums have such a unique sound that it’s difficult to categorize them. The only thing that bothers me as a metal fan is how when you say your into metal to someone who isn’t, they tend to assume you mean death metal, which I am actually not a fan of.

Also could talk about a subset of symphonic metal where they only do concept albums; you gotta listen to the whole album in order in order to really grasp the meaning an emotion of each song; randomly listening to a song from that album while on shuffle will not feel the same, usually the song doesn't really end, but slowly transitions into another one, but it's shuffle so you don't get closure (speaking from experience, i can be pedantic abt concept albums)

The only indie music I listen to is either small bands or an actual singular person. Sometimes they get super popular but still had just a one person beginning and I still love them. I like some rock, too. And occasionally, I'll dip into something more popular because it sounds good, but those songs usually don't have any emotion put into them, so I only listen to them if I need a break from my favourites.

Okay so as a metal head and a black, death, goregrind, and deathcore, enjoyer i am going to tell you how to tell the difference between the 4, and how you can differentiate them, then i will explain how many things Tucker got wrong about these subgenres last, first off is black metal, now a black metal band will most likely have a band name that sounds depressive and may come off as edgy, creepy, Scandinavian, nerdy, and anti religion. Examples include, Grausamkeit, Nattefrost, Armagedda, and lifelover. Logos are typically in olde english font, and are typically readable, and the music quality will be raw, lots of treble with no bass, and the vocals may just be someone breathing into a microphone with distortion, drums are typically blast beats or in rare cases, something else, like burzum beats, little to no bass and guitar is constant strumming. Next is goregrind, I put this before death metal because you need to know the heavier genre before the lighter genre of death, goregrind is a genre that is not for everybody, and may cause you to throw up, these bands have album covers that are extremely grotesque and are typically censored on spotify. Band names for goregrind typically do not sound too disturbing, however their song titles are extremely grotesque and atrocious. Some examples, Vaginal Disembowelment by Torsofuck, Bubbling Concoction of bile and urine by intestinal disgorge, and chased through the woods by a rapist by waking the cadaver. These songs can have a lot of bass, with some treble, and are typically played on a 7 or 8 string guitar. drums are almost always blast beats, and guitar and bass are basically tuned to the same tuning, with very low riffs and not much soloing, but that does depend on the artist. Death metal is like goregrind, but a lot less focused on grotesque nature, yet it is still very disturbing, album covers may be disturbing still, but they are mostly art, and not scenes of actual murders, suicides, or vomit or shit. Band names sound about just as grotesque as goregrind, however the song names can typically match the artist name, people typically get this genre and black metal mixed up, and the name of the artist and song is almost enough to tell. for examples, hammer smashed face by cannibal corpse, from womb to waste by dying fetus and mutilation by death. The songs can be expected to have some kind of blast beats, but might contain other parts with lighter drums, especially if its an older death metal band, like death or cannibal corpse. Treble and bass are about the same, some death metal bands use 7 strings, others only use 6 like cannibal corpse or death, and they just tune down. Final genre is deathcore, which is like a mix between (in my opinion) death metal and a little bit of nu metal, the names of bands are typically pretty tame, and so are the songs. However most deathcore bands have logos which make them look way harder then they are, and are almost always unreadable, some examples are demolisher by slaughter to prevail, decapitation fornication by infant annihilator, and forced gender reassignment by cattle decapitation. these songs have lots of blast beats and breakdowns, that is a big thing that you can use to differentiate death and deathcore, deathcore always has higher production level, and they use trash china cymbals which give deathcore its iconic sound. these bands go between really high pitched to low pitch constantly, and 7 strings are always used. the guitar typically uses the notes 0123 in some kind of order, and a lot of tritones are used. Now for some things the video got wrong about metal, first off, the person on the shirt that the one dude was wearing at the end of his rant, is no longer in prison and was released i want to say in 2010 because norway. He says that all metal fans want to act like they dont care, which only applies to teens on tiktok who discover my chemical romance or mayhem for the first time and are trying to be edgy, and also it is not true that metal fans dont want to share their music, even some black metal elitists may welcome you to the genre if your not a poser, not everyone is a gatekeeper. and yes, all of our genres are different, you cannot group the whole genre of metal into one video, let alone one section of one, because if you did that, you would be saying christan metal is the same as NSBM, if you know you know. And yes, if you mislabel deathcore as death metal, we will laugh at you, because its funny that you would think they are the same. There are so many differences between these genres most people would group into one and just call death metal, i could have kept going with different genres like death metal, and dont even get me started with genres of black metal, theres black gaze, dsbm, raw black metal, noise, and so many other genres i dont have the time to name. Also metal is not supposed to be a harsh vibe, you dont start with a goregrind band, no you would start with classic metal, like judas priest or sabbath, then work your way up. This is my rant, metalheads enjoy.

You forgot Bluegrass and Polka. My dad was in a Bluegrass band and also played the accordion in his spare time for fun. I spent my childhood listening to Bluegrass, 50s-70s country, and Polka because he was a music guy. Like the best sound and music quality came only on reel to reel or record. You will never know what hell is until you are forced to spend 3 hrs watching Lawrence Welk, followed by Hee Haw, then on to the Grand Ole Opry with your family every Saturday night unless you were lucky enough to be at a friends house or have friends over.

I wasn't gonna take the jam band slander, but you actually nailed a lot of points so I can't even complain much. That being said though, I do recommend The String Cheese Incident super heavy. It does fall into the "listen to a show not an album" category, but even the albums. You don't even need to do drugs, they just shred so hard that it's just a blast, and they don't really fit the mold of other jam bands. They have a pretty wide genre spread, with influences from rock, bluegrass, jazz, bossa nova, EDM, even some disco. They're genuinely my favorite band out there right now, and even better, they're still touring. I don't even really like calling them a jam band, because people think of the Dead or, god help me, Phish. The only thing that makes them a jam band is that they play a different show every night and they improvise a lot. And some of the differences in certain songs can be quite huge between shows. Even if you don't fuck with jam bands, I always recommend The String Cheese Incident

As a rock/metal/punk fan, yeah a lot of those jabs are pretty fair, though the politics are usually pretty easy to spot (Cheap Perfume literally has a song about punching nazi's). There is something interesting going on where a fair bit of EDM is getting mixed into the newer songs/bands in those genres (I'd argue bands like AViVA, grandson, and Adam Jensen fall into that category to varying degrees), this at one point or another was Industrial, though that genre (as far as I'm aware) has a pretty specific sound while a lot of those general techniques ended up in the rock/metal/punk space. And yes I know this proves I'm the jackass who'll give a 40 minute dissertation about these genres
