You are a whizz a taking simple shaped flowers and turning them into beautiful and unique work of art. The doodling is so imaginative. Like many others I like the iced spruce background but it was good too with the smaller border. I love those make up brushes for blending like you did. So much easier on the hands.

Thank you so much for sharing this video, Nina. Using watercolor paints are really pushing me out of my comfort zone. I don't have a lot of experience with watercolor, so this video is definitely helping me to do that. I have tried watercolor in tubes, watercolor pencils, and watercolor crayons. I don't have a favorite as of yet, but again, with use and lots of practice, I will be well on my way to working towards becoming more seasoned in using it. Your flowers are lovely and I look forward to this weeks watercolor prompt! Thank you again! :-)

Good morning nina, like the fact you say, this is not a tutorial, you take us along your learning to work with watercolours. Watercolours are harder to control i find, they just sometimes go their own way and you just learn to carefully watch what happens.I loved the moment you started the doodling, it made the flowers come alive, loved it..I agree that the border was a bit too much,BUT it still was a very nice piece, thumbs up and this is what it all about, you take decisions (??my english) and it is there and it is what it is, no use in being hard on yourself. Have a good week nina
@NinaRibenaMixedMedia5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Lena. I’m glad we are doing watercolours this month as I’ve wanted to focus on them for a long time to develop my skills. Its certainly a learning curve because as you say they have a mind of their own - just like alcohol inks, but I find that interesting. I did go over board with the border. I don’t regret adding it, I just wish I hadn’t added quite as much ink. Lesson learned and as you say, it is what it is and I still like it regardless. I hope you have a wonderful week too 💕😘🥰 xxx

I don’t think one can be “wrong” in artwork ideas as it is really all about preferences. I loved the crisp white background as the flowers to me popped out more. But as someone commented it is so Japanese to keep it white. To my eye maybe a lighter hand with the iced spruce or even a very pale pink, Victorian velvet somehow made dustier looking so the color values are similar. I do love the doodling idea here. Just so clever. No matter how we do a piece it’s all about experimenting and learning what we like. So fun to play.
@NinaRibenaMixedMedia5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your thoughts Dotalina. Its very helpful to hear everyones opinions. I felt very conflicted by the border when I edited the video and watched back, as I then loved the white space although it felt much too stark at the time 💕

I am on the “love the iced spruce” team. I think it still works as white space and makes an ethereal misty effect. I also love how you doodled hearts to make the flower calyxes. Of course, if I was making this there would have to be glitter somewhere... I am really enjoying this month’s prompts.

Your page is so pretty and unique, love it. With respect to the Artist Loft paints, the cheaper the paints the more chalky they are (which comes about due to the amount of filler added to the pigment). The brand of paper also makes a difference, and the texture - cold pressed is the one most people use and is slightly ridged, whilst hot pressed is very smooth allowing the paint to flow, but makes it harder to control. The Gansai Kuretake ones you have are not pure watercolours, they are more like a gouache with great coverage and vibrancy. A good student grade of watercolour paints is the Windsor and Newton Cotman range and I just watched a video the other day about Sennelier student grade and they are slightly better than the W & N. So to be honest it's a mine field out there as far as watercolour is concerned. Hope this helps. Tfs xo
@NinaRibenaMixedMedia5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this Elizabeth. I have some of the W & N paints, and I think I have a small set of Sennelier too. I picked ip several pallets at the scrap store a couple of years ago which they were selling for a song. I must admit I’ve been rather intimidated at the thought of using them, but I want to compare all of my watercolour products so I can see their differences and this month is a great way for me to experiment. Hugs 💕 xxxx
@franceswatts40015 жыл бұрын
Nina Ribena Elizabeth has said almost word for word what I was going to say. I would add that if you have tube paints, you may want to buy a tin with empty half pans into which you can squeeze some paint from the tubes. It is often easier to control.

I really love the quirkinesses of your picture Nina, it’s a stunning composition including the border and I wish I’d done it! You were certainly not helped by those watercolours which have a very patchy coverage and make you work twice as hard to get a good finish. There is a world of difference between craft watercolours and fine art watercolours. I think you did amazingly well to get the finish you did and like I said I just love the picture it’s just so whimsical xxx
