Job number one when you find yourself in a green side bunker is to get the ball out and give yourself a putt as your next shot, but they are not easy situations to deal with.
With so much information out there surrounding the bunker technique it can often be complicated and overwhelming, but in this video Chris shows you a simple way to play bunker shots that will enable you to get out every time.

Hi Chris, great advice - would love if you could do level 2-3-4 videos in addition to this one, as mini series on sand play, as there is not much out there how to manage shot length and spin from sand lies

Another great lesson Chris, especially as this is one of my weaknesses in my game. I also wanted to tell you that for the first time ever, I’ve just hit a handicap of single figures and at 63 I feel that ain’t a bad achievement. However, it’s an achievement that is totally attributed to the fact that I’ve been following your videos for the last two years or so, I truly do not believe I could have done it without being able to watch your lessons over and over again. I am grateful and thankful for what you do. I sincerely hope that you attain your rightful place at the top of the golf coaching fraternity. Cheers Clive

Most bunkers I get into have comparatively harder sand, so very difficult to skim through. I tend to play there without trying to scoop much sand, if at all.

Chris, thanks for another great golf video. I’m comfortable with the open face at address, so I guess I’m “level 2”. My question is: How do YOU get the ball to go 5, 10, 15, and 20 yards? Do you change the club? Do you change the degree that you open the club? Do you change the tempo/speed of your swing? Do you change where you strike the sand? Or, do you change the length of your backswing? I’m thinking it’s the latter but I’m not certain. Thank you.

Great explanation as always Chris. I use a 60 deg with 4 bounce because in my mind it goes through the sand easier and I tend to be a shallower hitter anyway. Im ok at getting out of bunkers, and does opening up a 56 almost replicate a 60?

Hi Chris, as per other commenter some of us aren't lucky to have nice sandy bunkers like you are playing out of where using the bounce works. Can you please a video for bunkers without sand (hardpan) which is a completely different technique? Thanks.
@ChrisRyanGolf

Hey Jason, tough evening there is no sand, but this technique would work fine, the only adjustment I would make would be to try and hit a little closer to the ball and to leave the face square at set up 👍

@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Randy, I’ve seen it used to great effect but have never personally coached it as I’ve not felt it’s been needed. I think for most adjusting the hold can put them too far out of their comfort zone before they have even taken the club away

Hey Chris great video. Would like to understand more about the swing in sand. Is it the same as a normal swing? Is the release different?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 жыл бұрын
A normal swing will get the ball out provided the strike is correctly behind the ball, for more advanced shots the release does change a little, but if the job is to get out then can be as the normal swing 👍

Hi Chris...saw your video, however didn't see anything that I haven't seen on other videos on how to get out of sand. Was hoping to get answers to such things as (1) how hard should one be swinging (2) should one be slapping the sand or trying to skim through the sand (or is there something else one should be trying to do with the club (3) why is one digging into the sand despite having the club face wide open or alternatively (4) why is one thinning the ball despite having the ball forward in the stance....maybe these are beyond the scope of this video, I don't know....thanks.

Great video as always Chris. I am exactly the type you mentioned who doesn't know how to hit a shot once the face is wide open. Do you think it will work if I set my club square initially then cup my wrist excessively during my backswing and keep it that way throughout the shot? Thanks a lot.
@ChrisRyanGolf

I would personally say that harder to manage, so I’d say play it with a square face and work away from the course on learning how to play the shot with the open face 👍

Chris, would like to know when to transition from open to square club face, depending on hardness of sand.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, unfortunately that a tough one to answer as it comes from experience and reps hitting shots from various types of sand. True that for firmed sand a square face often works best, but tough to say exactly when this would be the best option.
@erniemurdock8658

If the sand is very hard then just "chip it out". Gary Player said if the sand is hard use your wedge and just chip the ball out of the bunker. I'm sure Gary Player knows a lot more than Chris Ryan.

For decades, it was common instruction to open your stance a good deal with bunker shots. What caused the paradigm shift towards a more square stance in greenside bunkers?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Very true Joe, I’d still open my stance a little if I opened the face of the club, but true far more common now to stand fairly square. I think it’s just a development of understanding and appreciation of how the club works best with the sand, both techniques can achieve great results

@@ChrisRyanGolf Then what you should do is teach the fundamentals don't think that everyone knows the fundamentals because they don't. I taught golf for 30 years and I always started off with the fundamentals. Grip, Setup, ball position in the stance, stance and posture. Those are the five fundamentals you should start with. You'd be surprised who many players don't know. If your going to teach then teach right. When you tell someone to practice you tell them to practice with a purpose not go out and pound drivers for two hours.
