Today we welded a metal frame to our shipping container home. Relatively an easy process. Granted we are not welding experts and were still able to get it mounted to the structure. Again please always wear protective gear!

Just a little advice here. Before you weld anything, it is the utmost importance that you clean the surface that you are welding with a wire wheel or grinding wheel, then clean surface with Zylene. Your welds will be perfect.
@MrsCourtneySW
@MrsCourtneySW 3 ай бұрын
Thats not a good idea. While surface prep is important you never introduce industrial solvents to an area to be welded. These solvents vaporize while passing through the arc and introduce toxic gas much worse than welding fumes. Not trying to be a hater but its welding 101.

Very well explained. Good choice of the window frame design. After months of research, I have decided that this is the route I am going also, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. After seeing so many container builders struggling with square tubing and getting the window openings just right, this design makes the most sense. Thanks for sharing!

What do you use for framing? Steel tubing or flat angle steel like in this video
@tonyb7748
@tonyb7748 4 ай бұрын
@@primodinero3006 I do apologize for the delay - damn algorithm, I guess. The long and short of it is that the steel dimension being welded to the container doesn't matter so much as the wire or rod being used (this applies to Tig as well if you're daring enough) as this is for the container's longevity. As far as the opening material itself - we use square .065" wall tubing cold rolled for precision as our window supplier requires a tight tolerance for warranty that gets passed unto the customer. As previously stated, the steel could be dimensionally any type (angle or flat or tubing) as long as the weld contains sufficient cleaning action and deposits a good mix of compatible alloys to blend the anti-corrosive properties of the Corten sheet metal base. A good bottle of shielding gas for Mig and Tig would serve you well. Ex: Er70S6 wire with .035 and a feed rate of 190 IPM with 17V/ An E6010 3/32'' rod with about 45 Amps DC + or alternatively a / Tig #8 cup with 1/16" tungsten 2% Thoriated and flow about 20CFH if outside using a diffuser plate. I've seen really nice welding repairs on the roofs of containers fail within a year because the welding was sub-par, or the repair metal was not compatible with the base container sheet metal and acts as a sacrificial anode.

Thank you so much for your videos. I am trying to plan a container home build. A lot of people say it's expensive and unfortunately according to my calculations, I am indeed, getting really close to the prices of regular construction methods in my country. But I haven't given up. Your videos are helping me to believe that I can do some of the work myself and at the same time helping with figuring out all the details. I wonder how long it would take you to build a 2 x 40 foot container house. Also besides electricity, which tasks would you definitely say that should be done by a professional. Again, thank you so much.

Pre build the frames ( I believed you planned this ) A dozen + clamps, grind off the paint near the weld area and and wire brush the rust off the angle. Dump the innershield and get a CO2 mix unit. 1/2" welds every rib touching the angle on the outside, maybe ever other 2 or 3 on the inside would be enough. Prime and paint all exposed bare metal and then seal the outside with a bead of urethane or similar ( like you planned ). Might be a little overkill but I grew up in Seminole and remember how metal would rust while you watched.

what's going on bro I enjoy your videos since I tuned in I like the luxury interior that you do also build containers been doing them since 2017 I'm a structural engineer welder fabricator installer. I see in this video you are using 2x2 angle by 8-in that is a cool way to do it the only thing is it's not adding any structural support back to the frame due to the cutout we use two by two tubing and make a square frame that gives more stability and structure to the unit. Now that is a cost sufficient way to do it the way you are doing it I like it but in Phoenix Arizona the codes had the codes had to me structural welding standards. That 140 lincoln welder is a beast to use especially especially on cutouts and doors when I cut them in half to make one ways out of the hatch cubes I have to use at least a 180 unit because of the three sixteenths to quarter inch steel that I am putting into re-structure the frame after the cutout. I would love to network with you do a structural unit and have you do the interior for me . I'm in Oklahoma City now I'm presently working on a model called The Hog on Cafe. HogOn

great video. our container (storage only) has a dent on the side. plan is to put the window in that area. do you think this will make it easier to pop out the dent a bit? we'll be applying vinyl siding to the outside to make it look better for our neighbors but not concerned with inside. we have a few spots in the corners where we can see a little light coming in. would it be a good idea to hit those spots with the Flux welder? ty for your input. 🙂

Thoughts on welding 3 52’ containers together. That is approx 312’ of welding on the top of the containers if you weld the 2” metal strip on top. How long would it take an experienced welder to do a project that large? I imagine the difficulty for an experienced welder would be minimal due to all straight lines. Would probably cost quite a bit as well.

Hi. Would you happen to know if I can weld some metal onto the exterior steel wall of a container AFTER the inside side of the container wall has already been spray foamed? I'm looking to attach/weld some steel plates to the exterior of my container home, but the house has already been fully spray foamed inside and I'm concerned that spray foam could ignite from the heat of welding.

I was wondering the same thing, especially since he said he needed to do a lot of extra work to hide the screws he was going to use. I was hoping someone would ask. I guess it depends on the window. Still, I’m putting the flats on the outside until I find a good reason not to.

What would be the best flux material for angel-iron and the container thickness or does it matter..the difference between the two metals?
@MrsCourtneySW
@MrsCourtneySW 3 ай бұрын
It does matter. Angle-iron is usually a36 steel and shipping containers are made from corten steel which is weather resistant. The shipping container walls are usually 19 gauge and the roof is 6 gauge. You need a filler material that is chemically and mechanically similar when welding these two together. The following chart should help. Corten Steel Welding using Stick Welding (SMAW) rod: E7018, E7018-W1, E8018-W2. Corten Steel Welding using TIG-MIG welding Filler Wire: ER70S-2, ER70S-6, ER80S-Ni1. Corten Steel Welding using FCAW: E71-T1C, E81T1-Ni1C, E 80T-W.

Any time the container structure is punctured, it reduces the structural integrity. We aim to minimize points of failure and have found that reinforcing our units with this method works great! We've streamlined our production to a point where this method is not very time consuming and since we are producing at scale it's not super expensive either.
