Thank you very nice lesson by the way what's the meaning of the phrasal verb "muddle up" ?
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Oh great question Haider. To muddle up means to mix up - so to confuse one thing for another. Perhaps we can include it in another video.

Thank you very much for the lesson, Madam, Sir, but shouldn't we use a future form tense when speaking about " I hope"? For example : I hope you will like it. I hope everything is going to be ok. I hole you will pass the exam....etc Why did you use present simple in this case? Thank you.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Great question. 'I hope you like it' and 'I hope you will like it.' are both possible. For example, if I gave you a present I might say either one, though 'I hope you like it' is probably more common. We often use the present tense to talk about the future. For example, if I wanted to know what time you train was leaving (in the future) I could ask 'What time does it leave?' or 'What time is it leaving?'. It would be odd in that situation to say 'What time will it leave.

I absolutely loved this video! I could watch you forever! Saying that I still have a doubt about an answer to the question I had in mind. If we make official wishes (like on a card), may we use for example "I wish you passing your exam" with the form -ing instead of a proper noun? "I wish you good luck on the exam" would be obvious but I am just wondering about the possibility and wether it's correct in English. Thank you in advance for answering!
@SimpleEnglishVideos4 жыл бұрын
Marta, this is Jay writing back to you. It's a bit strange to use the 'ing' form, but you could say "Good luck passing your exam." But I would most likely say "Good luck on your exam."

What about saying "wishing you a speedy recovery"? Is it naturally and grammatically correct? Thank you in advance for your kind answer.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nanchaya. Great question. Yes, it is correct in written English. It is something we would write at the end of a letter or email to someone who is ill.

I hope he will get a good mark on his exam- Here, there is a possibility he will ace his exam because he is a straight-A student. I wish you will pass your exam- Here implies you are not a good student, you didn't study for the exam. You need a miracle to pass that exam. You need a spell to pass the exam that is why I wish you good luck on your exam.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Oh good try, Theyoutubepolyglot, but no. This isn't about possibilities. The first one works, but whether he is a good student or not doesn't matter. He could be a terrible student and you could still hope he passes. What matters is that you want it to happen. And the second example is grammatically wrong. After I wish, you can't use will. I think we might have talked about that in some other videos on wish and hope. Have you seen them yet?
@Theyoutuberpolyglot6 жыл бұрын
Yes I did You said wish is like magic. Magic is not real. If my mind sees and reads sentences, I will spot better the differences. This is new to me. I understood wish is more formal than hope. I hope you have had a good trip. I think I got it. You can't use wish in the present. I wish I were smarter. I am not smart and I don't think I will be smart one day. Hope you can use it in the present and is something that can happen. I hope you'll win the lottery. There is a possibility you win the lottery. I wish he had passed his exam- Now is too late. I think I nailed it this time.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Ha! We're getting there. Great job! With the "I wish I were smarter' example, you might actually think you are smart in the present, but you're just not as smart as you'd like to be. And yes, you nailed all the others! :-)
