Thanks. But I confuse about Jay didn't go to sale meeting (I think Jay can use had hoped too because lastly jay didn't go I think about this and my result is "had hoped" use for things you hope and "wish + past perfect" use with complaining maybe? So that the reason for can't use had hoped) Did I get it right?
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi Poom! Thanks for this question. In the example, the sales meeting hasn't happened yet. Jay didn't know about the meeting so he arranged to play tennis. When he hears about the meeting he realizes he'll have to go to it. He's annoyed that I didn't tell him about it earlier because now he'll have to change his plans. That's why he says "I wish Vicki had told me about the sales meeting". Does that help?
@poomtanawat60016 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vicky. of course This really help me. I read this and spend time to understand it. I summarize it like this : use wish with things that you want but it isn't want from past but it is want when it already happen so it can't happen anymore but had hoped use with want from past but didn't happen so it can't happen too (in most situation) . these 2 can't happen in a different way right?

Thank you for very useful and iteresting video. You solved my problem because I was not sure if it was correct to use future tense after will. However I have a question about I am hoping because I was tought it is incorrect structure because hope is stative verb. Could you please explain it. Thank you.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hello anna anna. Great question and well done you for spotting that 'I am hoping' example. Yes, normally stative verbs like wish and hope don't have a continuous form, but notice I said normally. :-) If a speaker wants, then can add an -ing and make them dynamic. Here's a nice explanation that I found here: english.stackexchange.com/questions/187261/stative-verbs-in-the-continuous-form Yes, the general 'rule' is that stative verbs don't have a continuous form; however, some stative verbs can also function as dynamic verbs. Let's take your examples: wish, feel, hope, guess, love and like.This Christmas, thousands of children are wishing for peace. (Here wishing has a dynamic thrust.)He was feeling my face. ([F]eeling here is examining something by touching)She was hoping that he would come back one day. (Perhaps hoping sounds odd to some here. This could be a continuous period, e.g., a month, a year, several years.)Colloquially, like, love, and guess are sometimes used in a continuous aspect. FumbleFingers has already given an example for like.I'm guessing you didn't know. (This is found often in speech, but perhaps not in writing.)I'm loving this hamburger. (Very similar to liking but more emphatic)In summary: to paraphrase Quirk et al. (A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language), it's not that stative verbs are incompatible with the progressive but that when they are used this way they have taken on a dynamic quality.

Oh and just in case you're interested, we have made a video about sense verbs and how we can use them as stative and dymanic verbs that you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGrSn6qanJVkhKM

Hi Vick and Jay, I am fan of Simple English Videos and I like it very much.But it has troubled me for a long time that I can not find a place to discuss English problems with others when I can not handle it by myself.For example, when my English teacher assigned me an essay,I have no idea about how to write and write excellently. So I hope you can afford us a place for discussing.^_^

What is the different between compulsory and compulsive
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
If something is compulsory you must do it because there's a rule or a law. If a person is compulsive, they can't control their behaviour. They find it difficult to stop doing something. For example, someone could be a compulsive gambler or drinker.
@husseinslavethepoor82946 жыл бұрын
Hi, Gulsum Aksakal , in your sentence , use difference instead of different because, different is an adjective,whereas, difference is a noun.
