I’m a native English speaker but I love how wholesome these videos are so I watch anyway❤️also watching these videos helps me realize how ridiculous English can be at times, and how it’s become natural through years of speaking the language, so it’s motivated me to learn my target language, Chinese. @@SimpleEnglishVideos My original list 20 American slangs British didn't used aren't PG friendly I changed it. If you guys looked that the old list to comparison to the new list are different most of the original part of the list I could remember it. Note We have a jumper here not a dress or sweater starting w \ a s middle ci ending e because YT trigger word is that word mean someone jump off something. Some words used in the UK come from your friend cross the pond. Also via versa some UK in the US shore w \ a American twist on it.

And in some cases the word or expression originated in Britain and returned to its native country via Hollywood. BTW, re No.9 in your first list ("To bare arms"): I'm quite sure that wasn't originally American. For generations people in Britain have worn short sleeves, especially in warm weather.

You are great 💜 I liked the phrase rain check 👍🏼
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Zahrsa. This is Jay writing back to you. When I was a little boy I lived near a famous baseball stadium in Brooklyn, New York. The kids on my street would collect rain checks from stadium spectators as they walked down our street, and we would later trade them with each other. So when a store offers a rain check for an item that's out of stock, they are actually referring to that little ticket stub we used to collect as kids from people who attended baseball games. If the game had been cancelled after it started due to rain, they could use the rain check to attend a different game later. :-)

What does Polish idiom: Leży jak skóra, which means word for word translation: It lies like a skin. It means that something is correct. Or if something is a guitar it means that it is ok as well. But a guitar refers to a nicely looking girl, because of her shape.

When you mentioned the phrase “bought the farm” I thought of my friend Crystal’s favorite song “Another one Bites the Dust” “another one gone, another one gone” I wonder if that line has something to do with that phrase “bought the farm”
@MoriKitsune
@MoriKitsune 4 жыл бұрын
It does; it's referring to when someone dies and their body hits the ground, especially if it's face-first. It's similar to the expression that someone "ate" dirt, asphalt, etc. when they fell face-first onto the ground.
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, this is Jay writing back to you. That's certainly one of my favorite Queen tracks. To 'bite the dust' is similar to 'bought the farm' in that they both mean the person who has bitten the dust or bought the farm has died. But they aren't exactly interchangeable. 'Bite the dust' is an expression that many associate with the Western genre of movies. The bad guy bites the dust when he falls to the ground after being shot by the sheriff. But there are references in Sottish literature from 1750, in the bible, and even Homer's Iliad. Look it up. It's really fascinating. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching.

Vicky, what do you think about The Beatles?
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joao, Vicki here. I ADORE the Beatles. :-)
@christrickett3291
@christrickett3291 4 жыл бұрын
I am British and from near Liverpool. The Beatles are certainly very popular, but mainly among foreigners. A lot of people from here tend to see them as a side show, to be honest. I have never met a British person in my 50 years who expressly likes them, yet as an English teacher for many years I have met A LOT of students who love them and sadly, assume that I do too. As for me, I think they are seriously overrated but then, most headline bands are. I occasionally do their songs in class to help with English stuff. I am happy to do this, my students pay my salary and I won't reject their wishes because we have different tastes in music... but I tend to conveniently need to take a dump when Yesterday comes on.
@christrickett3291
@christrickett3291 4 жыл бұрын
However, FAR worse is when my students congratulate me on a royal baby or something!!!! I own my own school, if they assume I like the Beatles, I am happy just to put them straight politely. But they are in danger of being expelled if they think I like the bloody royal family!

Hi Flor. The justice department is the agency responsible for enforcing federal laws (so laws for the whole of the US rather than state laws) We're not sure what you mean by the justice of justice, but the attorney general is the head of the justice department. Hope this helps.

It was probably an English teacher who is already empathising with his or her students' difficulties in learning English, without hammering into them this ridiculous notion that American and British English are different. The odd word maybe, but anybody who grew up in England or America will know that there are thousands of differences *within* English without pandering to some nationalist superiority complex each side of the so-called Pond which means that neither nation can accept that theirs is not better - so we end up with two supposedly different versions. It is all crap! British and American English are THE SAME! If we insist on going down that road please can I start teaching my students the difference between London English and Manchester English, oh boy, won't that be useful? I challenge you, have your phone language set to British English and a week later change it to American English and see if you can see ANY difference. Good luck! Or as they say in American English, good luck!

PS I didn't dislike this video, I thought it was misguided in *this* case, but the series here in general is excellent. I started a channel for teachers called ESOL Ideas and it was a pathetic failure, I had about 2 subs in a year, took the hint and flushed it down the bog, so I have no right to dislike any other teachers' work, and can't anyway in this case, this channel will be added to my students' recommended list NOW!!! I just have this bee in my bonnet about teachers wasting time teaching students anywhere below Proficiency level the odd occasional difference between two things which are 99.9999999% THE SAME!!!!!!

No. You have to use "have" or "has" to form the perfect or pluperfect tenses. Your second examples are correct
@colbyneblett8454
@colbyneblett8454 4 жыл бұрын
Your second example is technically correct I guess but no one talks like that. A better way would be flipping it "Since she got married she doesn't come around here anymore"

@colbyneblett8454

@@ritusonii2197 you use have and has for if a thing is ongoing. "I have liked him since childhood" Implies you liked them in the past and still do. Saying "I liked him as a child" means that you used to like him but it's open ended and implies you no longer do By that logic in your second sentence you would use hasn't instead of doesn't because it's an ongoing thing. She has not come by since here marriage but she may. Doesn't is very final. Implying she has not and will not come

Hi D-series. This is Jay writing back to you. I think you'll find there are excellent explanations of both of these words in online dictionaries on the web. However, I'll tell you the difference as I understand it. My father, who came to the United States before the 2nd Word War, lived in Eastern Europe. He emigrated from his home country. From the point of view of my American born mother, who met him in the United States after he arrived, he immigrated to the United States. He was an immigrant. I hope that helps.
