Isn't it kind of inpolite or rude to speak Cockney rhyming slang? Vicki mentioned it was a jail slang so... At least here in Russia it's not good to speak that way
@connie1wilson5 жыл бұрын
Константин Ежов - It’s not a language, it’s a quirk of English, similar to slang, which every language, even Russian must have. People don’t speak it as a rule, and I would only ever say it ramdomly to other Londoners who I know. The most I might say is let’s have a butchers. Most English people I know speak properly when speaking to others.
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Lovely examples Connie. You've made a start on the video for me here. Thank you. :-)
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Konstantin - great question! Vicki here. The origins of rhyming slang were related to jail, but a lot of people don't know that and most people associate it with a more charming side of London these days - pearly kings and queens and things like that. So no, it doesn't have the same connotations. Another thing, people often use rhyming slang without realizing it. I just had a comment from Bahare about the phrase 'donkeys years' - which means a very long time. I use this expression but only when he told me did I realize it was rhyming slang. Donkey's ears - years. :-)

That's interesting Pieter. The Online Etymology Dictionary says: [The] origin of the word [is] from the Northern England noun slang "a narrow piece of land running up between other and larger divisions of ground" and the verb slanger "linger, go slowly," which is of Scandinavian origin (compare Norwegian slenge "hang loose, sling, sway, dangle," Danish slænge "to throw, sling"). Excuse me,I have a question: In 7:07,Jay said:”in the line for the bank”. I just don’t understand why used the preposition “for” here?To indicate the location why not just used the preposition “at”?”at the bank”,it sounds more logical to me.”for the bank”, I understand it as: “Jump the queue for the benefit of the bank.”it is very odd to me. Could you help me answer this question?Thank you!
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Clan Shee. This is Jay writing back to you. That's an excellent question. When I used the preposition "for" it indicated that I was 'waiting for' something, in this case, some service at that bank. If I was waiting 'at' the bank, I could have simply been waiting to meet someone, or waiting for the rain to stop, "for the bank" meant I was anticipating doing something once I got in the bank, like cashing a check, or using the ATM machine. I hope that helps. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching.

We all know I love these videos but if you guys ever take requests I need to know how to pronounce Worcestershire. I never get it right and I always just end up saying “just get me that crap that I put on pot roast!”

Hi Kate. So glad you like the videos. Worcestershire is a tricky one and you'll find us talking about it at the end of this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHvPlZKvm69sp9U

Vicky 😍... what’s the difference between the slang words ( tosh and codswallop)?
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Oh great question Emy Emmy. They mean the same thing. We'd use them in slightly different expressions though. We often use codswallop with 'load'. 'What a load of (old) codswallop'. And we often use tosh with the verb talk. 'Don't talk tosh'.

So very interesting to get better in using slangwords. Can be useful. Thanks for a good video. Have not commented so much earlier but would like to have some explination when to use the word fun and funny in a proper way. My English is quite good but in this matter I cannot really go on my feeling. I am from Sweden and have only school English in my luggage/bagage?? Thank you and hope for a reply. Rgds Robert from Sweden.

Hi Robert. We're so glad you like the videos. Here's a video about fun and funny. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6i5mWRsl86Dm7s We made it some years ago and we could probably remake it and add more, but it covers the basics. Hope it helps.

Good evening mrs Vicky! What is your opinion about brexit please? Did you involve on the eu election please? Did you vote for the brexit party please?
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Akos. I am horrified by Brexit. I am a British citizen but I couldn't vote because I live abroad. If I could have voted, I would have voted too remain in the EU. Europe has been plagued by wars and bringing people together is what we need, not dividing them so I think the EU is a wonderful thing. I hope that the UK will get another chance to vote on Brexit and that it votes to remain. I believe we will all be stronger if we stand together.

Simple English Videos Good day mrs Vicky! Could i tell something 2 u please? I usually watch retro, heritage hungarian political videos please! In my childhood, my parents said, politicians r stupid. What i want to tell, it shows it perfect unfortunately! First: in our language there r informal,n formal YOU please. My parents said, if politicians sit in da parlament, in the mainroom, they must 2 use FORMAL YOU, in hungarian ÖN,the plural is önök.. But if they are in da buffet, nthey r eating o drinking something or justtalking, they can use the INFORMAL YOU, WE SAY te in plural ti. Some stupid politicians say the mainrule of da parlament, is USING INFORMAL YOU DURING WORK IS FORBIDDEN. BZT! I HAVE KNOWN TODAY THAT USING INFORMAL YOU IS NOT IN THE BOOK! ONLY THAT THEY HAVE TO RESPECT EACH OTHER! There was a famous scene, one of the opposite politicians had used INFORMAL U FOR THE PRIME MINISTER! THE VICEPRESIDENT OF THE PARLAMENT SAID THAT THIS IS FORBIDDEN! AFTER THIS FAMOUS SPEECH, THIS YOUNG BOY was invited into 2 political tv programs! In one of them he has asked the speaker in da studio with jok, could he use the informal you, t, this phrase in hungarian tegezés or tegezŐDés. The man said, no. Tha 25 years old boy, Bence Tordai said, people can respect each other, WHEN THEY USE TE OR TI WITH EACH OTHER TOO! In da other tv program, the speaker asked this boy about that as well. Then, they used informal you between each other . Then, Bence Tordai said he had read the Rules of the Parlament. He said, they didn't find rule about informal you in the parlament! So da truth is that they, politician could have use the informal you each other EVERYWHERE, IN THA CONCILROOM TOO! EVENTOUGH, THEY COULD USE IT FOR PRESIDENT AS WELL! IF I HAVE TIME, I WILL TELL IT IN GERMAN O ITALIAN AS WELL! OK? Guten Abend! I fand es Blödheit bitte! Ok, tordai fing lesen an wieder.
