I get this ! ❤ I grew up in a conservative Mennonite home . The only social media we had was a phone on the wall . And my Mom never churned the butter that was a child’s job ! We took turns . We also took turns washing dishes , mom rarely washed dishes we took turns doing barn chores etc etc . Our recreation was reading , playing play dough or dolls and in the woods , we were never bored ! We were just glad for a break from all the chores . I was the oldest of nine .As a Mom I did what my Mom and grandma did , the children were given things to do as soon as they were able we did not entertain our children. If they got bored they were either put to work or found something to do so they wouldn’t have to work 😅 . Also in our culture us women all did the same thing there were no expectations of doing anything other then being a homemaker . It was a small world maybe but I feel blessed to have had it .

There's another difference in laundry from years ago and now. The way we dress is drastically different. Many garments weren't actually washed. Only the layers against the skin were washed with regularity. The shift and underclothes were washed. Sometimes the petticoats. Corsets/stays, corset covers, underdress gowns, coats and the other outer layers weren't washed regularly because they didn't really need to be. Many gowns had a dust ruffle that could be removed and washed and then reattached. It saved things from wear and tear. NOW we wash absolutely everything we wear so there's more to wash.

Also, most people did not do their own laundry, especially in big cities. They sent their clothes to a laundress who washed them.

This was very thought provoking. As a mom of six, I agree with so much of what you both said. You learn so much after having many children, that you just can’t/don’t usually know when first starting out. Podcasts like this, where experienced large family parents can share their wisdom is invaluable.

I am a mother of six in the UK and I think because we have too much time, we actually take on extra things to do and then get overwhelmed with it all. Well that’s what I seem to do lol

Yes! Yes! Yes! I love to get rid of clothes rather than storing them in totes! Also, I never feel bored, but it may be because I don’t have social media and I’m a project person. If anything, I get frustrated with myself for taking on too much. For example, yesterday we picked 75 pounds of strawberries and then spent the day processing them, in addition to all my normal daily activities. Thank you for this episode. I love hearing what works for other moms of big families. I totally agree with how we can build up stuff in our heads. Mental burdens and decision fatigue is a real thing. I think it all comes with habits. The days I start with my supplements, a quart of water, some time on my rebounder and in my Bible, starting two loads of laundry and folding two, getting breakfast made before kids wake- those are the best days. But it sure is hard to make those things become habits.
@c.belles2465

This was really good! Because we have more time in our days and can "do more", it also means making more decisions and juggling more things. When laundry took half a day to a whole day, there wasn't much else that needed to be decided. Whereas now, I put a load of laundry in and then decide what I'm going to do for half an hour until it needs my attention to put it in the dryer, and then go back to what I was working on, or start something new. It's the transitions sometimes that lose me, or where I get distracted.

I highly recommend involving the children in the tasks you do at home. Children when very young love to be part of what you are doing, they love to feel useful. They want to try things for themselves. Everything is new to them, and it is special! I love watching my children learn and grow. Become their cheerleader and encourager. Moms are struggling because they are competing with their children whereas they need to change their mindset and realize that their children are their work and their pride and joy. This time will soon pass. You want them involved in what you're doing. Whether that's laundry, baking, cleaning, or cross stitching, sewing, resting, playing. In regards to too much time, yes, moms are filling it up with things that don't need to be done instead of things that should be done. Shift your priorities and thinking to what will build your family up and eliminate the time wasters.

We have five daughters and we have no family that is involved in their lives. Our hope is that our children as adults will never have to go through life without having supportive parents right there to help when needed. I don't want them to have to go through what we have with no family. We want our grandchildren to never have to go through life without having grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and siblings to live life together. I hope our girls can stay super close as adults, and I hope my husband and I live long, healthy lives to help them as long as we can!

I don’t really look for systems anymore, but I DO feel lost on how to add homeschooling to the housework, cooking, and six going on seven children. I’ve had seven children in eight years and had a baby in the middle of trying to homeschool and now feel lost on how to do it all well. In a way that is a blessing to my family, myself and to the Lord.

I have 4 daughters and i am a sahm. For my own sanity i picked fitness as my big hobby. I go 4 times a week. For 1-2 hours while kids are in school. In the holidays i will go two times and 2 times at home. It really helped feeling more fulfilled and happier. I have to get out of the home because my mind keeps thinking about all the things doing in my home if i stay at home. But when i go out i literally dont think about our home 😂

Lisa, I haven't commented before, but I have been loving your podcasts. They are blessing me so much! I have an almost q8 month old and I needed this episode! I felt so bad for feeling bored just playing with a toddler! I love keeping home and trying new things (just made sauerkraut for the first time!), but learning how to do things with a little one. I feel a desperate need for mental stimulation and this just made so much sense! Thank you!

I can't tell you how timely this podcast is for me! I am 38 weeks pregnant with my 4th and I was just feeling a little guilty this morning/wondering if it's normal that I haven't fully even mentally processed this pregnancy and now it's almost over and time to prep for labor/birth. It's not that I feel I'm overly busy, but my days are blessed and full of good work with my three babies. And I've also wondered if I have too much time because at this point in pregnancy my energy level is pretty low so I'm slowing down and just maintaining the house and a little bored some days now that home school is done for the summer as well lol I wondered am I the only one who is bored? But I don't want to do too much right now either so just trying to take each day as it comes and go to the park or for a walk with the kids. I love your channel and am always very inspired by your joy in homemaking so thanks for sharing that and these other beautiful women that you interview as well. ❤ Prayers for both you ladies as your pregnancies are reaching the finish line as well!!

This was SO encouraging. I’m 17 weeks pregnant and just out of the throws of morning sickness. Don’t feel guilt over that. Playing with our kids is only a portion of loving them and taking care of them and training them. Don’t allow that one thing to get you down. I can be the same way. Play when it is fun for you and sometimes a certain age feels more fun to play with! and that’s great! But again, that’s a part of motherhood but not the whole.💛

My dad works in a factory that doesn't have air conditioning all summer and he's doing hard manual labor. He'll get off of work and go home and do more hard labor!! His wife, works from home all day. She goes to sleep immediately after working and always has headaches. I notice that I'm way more rejuvenated after physical labor than I am mental labor. My dad thinks people are lazy nowadays but in reality, we're constantly having to do things that are sucking the life out of us lol. "An object in motion, stays in motion".

I enjoyed this one! Yes--the mental burden of especially new-to-us things can be daunting. I am often put off by the mental energy I have to expend to make something a part of my most-days life. Sourdough is a great example. I make it often in the winter...sometimes daily for long stretches. In the summer I don't make it at all, so when it's time to get back to it in winter, I put it off because I have to re-train myself on the amounts of ingredients and the process. I have spent the last six or so months paring down our home. I tackled each room and the attic and got rid of many bags to donation and trash. I need to get rid of more, but even now I can clean our home so much more easily because there is less to clean around. I'm learning to have the acceptable minimum in most areas of my life.

This minimal structure may apply to ppl that have decent sized homes. Our family of 6 lives in 600sqft single wide and this isn't really possible for us. I have 4 kids in one very tiny room, a teen, a 5 year old a 2 yr old and a baby. They all have few of their own things but it's such a cramped space that it's always a wreck. Our house is so small that we have to clean up our tiny space ALL day to keep it moderately tidy. Plus our homestead life means we have to store stuff that we use seasonally for the farm. We don't own a lot of things but it looks like a lot in a tiny space.

Love this episode from 2 women beautiful inside and out! Very true that small families can dismiss their 2 children, even more so than parents with 10 children. It depends on the heart. I saw it growing up with my school friends. A lot of time it's the very reason for having many children- the cherishing of people, the Word of God, and the little soul created...the regard for God & mankind and the beauty of the meaning of the fruitful vine and olive trees that surround the table. Many get it, sadly very many don't but it's the most beautiful thing next to salvation, i think. ❤

Thank you ladies, so much for this podcast. The part about half way through when you were talking about finding meaningful things to do meant so much to me. I have been a stay at home, Christian mom for 16 years, and homeschooling for a decade. I was always (for the most part) that mom that was content to just be at home with my children. Suddenly I find myself with an inner sadness and lack of fulfillment. As you described, there is the hampster wheel of doing the same things over and over, and I do not feel I have accomplished even those to the standard i would like. I cant think of anything else i would rather do besides be at home caring my kids and husband, whom i love so much, but suddenly its not enough to make me feel fullfilled or accomplished. I'm burned out and thinking deeply about this the past few months because I want to be a joyful, fulfilled mom and not a depressed one. I jotted down some things you all said, and I'm going to make that list of 100 things to be, do, or have starting right now. My 4 kids are old enough now that there is no reason that I cant take time for myself....I just think as you said, I have forgotten how to dream. God bless you both.

So much in this one was SO good. Including sponsors haha - trying to stay minimal and also thinking, these clothes and lotions sound amazing!! Anyway, I am new to homemaking and motherhood with two littles and one on the way and a lot of this I’m hearing for the very first time. You used the word “encouragement” at the end and I just wanted to raise my hand and let you know I feel truly encouraged. The 8 outfits, the 2 min tidy and the fact that Lisa from Farmhouse on Boone used to walk with the stroller for hours a day just like me is HUGELY encouraging. Looking to grow into a dynamo mom/empire builder with my husband in time, just like you 💪

Something that's a blessing but also a curse is grandma's who love to thrift for my kids. I don't have to buy hardly anything for them but keeping it minimal is a struggle because it's not curated very well. I still manage to keep 3 kids to a large 6 drawer dresser, a small dresser and an armoire, but there are shoes and coats that don't go with outfits and shirts or pants that only go with one other thing. I need to get a handle on it because they're getting bigger!

My kids are 3,5, and 7 and we homeschool so we're home a lot, im definitely a minimalist, and I've limited the toys but they still have a lot between the three if them, I irganize the toys in bins or baskets and lock them in my sons walk in closet, they each get a few toys out all the time, trucks or action figures for my son and dolls and a few other toys for my girls, when they want something else or it's playtime, they get to choose a bin of or a toy they want to play with, its not more than they can manage, they are responsible for cleaning up that toy when they're done playing or if they want another toy they put it all away back in the bin or basket if its a lot of peices and can trade that for another toy, it actually keeps the toys more enjoyable too because they stay together instead of being thrown in a big toy box together, they are playing more focused and longer then they did when they had too many toys and we are all less stressed because the mess is much more managable.

When I minimize my kitchen gadgets, and I'm not sure if I need it, I put them in a bin in the garage, so like your potato masher, put it somewhere else like a bin in a closet or garage and see if you'll go it or just use a fork, if you find you'd rather use a fork then go get it, you can donate it, otherwise you might want to keep it in another place not in that drawer of utensils you use often but in a bin or cabinet somewhere else.

It can absolutely happen with a smaller family. I used to work in CPS and it was just a pregnancy and not a parenting. Dad's and mothers just check out emotionally. I grew up in a family where the Dad was physically abusive to my older brother and I and my mother had ZERO support. She wasn't allowed to drive anywhere, work, get educated, spend money. Eventually she snuck housecleaning jobs. She withdrew, obviously and became verbally abusive, yelling ,y brother on his 16th birthday that she wished he'd never been born. She got pregnant with him at age 16. I watched his shoulders slump over and he has never been the same. To this day, neither one of us have a relationship with her. I mean, she didn't want us and now she has hee wish. ...I am so grateful for KZbin and women like you guys sharing how to get thru the days. I wish my mother had this when she was younger. 😊

My first is 3 weeks old and starting at 1.5 weeks he will not nap unless he's held. I've been wearing him in a carrier most of the day. The rest of the time I'm nursing, changing diapers, tummy time. I've been able to tidy the house, do laundry, and cook with him in the carrier but it's a lot harder especially as I'm recovering from an emergency c section. At night it's hit or miss but lately baby reflux has made it impossible to get him to sleep on his back so we've been getting hardly any sleep. I'm looking forward to simple things like a long walk with him in the stroller once I'm recovered. Any tips to encourage a newborn to nap independently would be appreciated. He hates being swaddled, will not fall asleep if placed in the bassinet awake at all even if drowsy and will wake up less than five minutes after being placed there where asleep.

For me, it's not the 'how do you have time for sourdough!?'... It's the 'how do you make sourdough work???' 😂. I'm 2 years into trying to make sourdough, tried your recipe, tried other recipes, and i just can't make it work haha! I've done homemade bread for well over 10 years, made my own recipes out of it, had an at home bakery from it, yet can't get sourdough to work

Usually sourdough success comes down to the strength of your starter. Your starter after being fed should at least double in size and be very active and bubbly. If not, try strengthening it by feeding twice a day and or feeding it rye flour for a couple days in a row. Also make sure your water and flour do not have any chlorine or bleaching agents as that inhibits the healthy growth of bacteria.

@@Simplefarmhouselife oh thank you. The water treatment from the tap water is probably my issue then! I'll have to try it with bottled water

I know I’m not the only one who does this but, I always cut my daughters winter long sleeve shirts and pants and boom, short sleeve shirts and shorts 😂. If they’re too ruined to wear out or getting too small, then they’re now her summer pajamas or play clothes. People always make fun of me for doing that but I’m getting my money’s worth lol great episode ❤️

I disagree strongly. Mother’s do not have too much time. Katie is not a homesteader. Add a garden and some animals and food preservation to what Katie does and she wouldn’t think there’s too much time. I used every minute of my time. She also has a husband who helps her out a lot. Motherhood was never a drudgery for me, but Katie has a tendency to believe it’s not enough. Her favorite word is intentionality.

I’m confused as to why your families use dryers instead of hanging your laundry on a clothesline to dry, especially on a warm sunny day???

I'm not even going to watch the video and I'm giving a big NO !! I was an at home mom of four for 18 years. NO we don't have too much time on our hands. Its all the soccer and dance moms that are doing TOO much. Go live in another country and you will see how "busy" we Americans are. We need to learn how to slow it down and stop multi-tasking so much and say NO to more activities so we can get our sanity back. We have lost our minds and its affecting society. Think about it - homemakers are NEVER off the clock !!! OK, I'll give credit where credit is due - Parents are never off the clock ! One of my favorite places as a mother, was the doctor's waiting room. I could just sit there and do nothing and not be judged for doing nothing. Of course, I was still supervising my children, so I really wasn't doing nothing. Many times I played I spy with the kids to keep them occupied.

@@hatcherhomestead You might be right, I'll try and set an hour's worth of time to listen. Since I use a pc and considering the rest of my family's lifestyles, this will be a small challenge, but as you said, probably worth it.

The soccer and dance moms also just get to sit and chill while their kids do the sports…. Much like the doctors waiting room.

@@anastasiya8314 And play on their phones while doing that.....I have never had a smart phone and have used that time to not only watch our kid playing on the ball field or on the taekwondo mat, but entertain the siblings while sitting in the bleachers or perimeter of the room. All the while getting snooty looks from all the other parents (Well, ALL the parents at the ball park and only some from the dojang.). Thank you very much.
