The A330 basically had no competitor from the early 90s to the late 20s until the 787 was introduced. The closest Boeing offering during this period was the 767 but it is technically miles behind the A330. The 777 is considerably bigger than the A330 so it was not a direct competitor.

As a Turkish citizen there is a reason why A330's are so popular in Turkey. TK uses their A330's in Europe based flights mostly (around 2000 km). Also in summer seasons demand for domestic flights skyrockets! Even the longest domestic flight is around 900 km's , A330 is very useful. They also operate A330's to Western Asia and Africa flights too. I had a chance to fly with a (ceased operations in 2021) Onur Air's A332 in 2017. For a 650 km flight it was very good. A330 should stay at service for 10 more years!

Here in the Philippines, the A330 is just as utilized by the two leading airlines (Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific) for both domestic and international routes, so avgeeks here get to see this plane model more so often. Personally I've seen and flown on A330s ranging from PAL using it for their Manila-Davao morning flight, to CebuPac using it for their Manila-Bangkok route.

I flew a total of 3 times with a Lufthansa A330, where I always took the seats at the very back on the right. We had our peace and quiet, no one behind us and no one right next to us. The 2-4-2 configuration is perfect!

@@risannd That doesn't stop A380 being one of the quietest airliners. 777, espcailly GE90-115 powered 77W/77L, come with some of the largest and most powerful engines available at the time, and that comes with a price - noiser. In contrast, A340 is powered by CFM56, similar to those fitted on 737NGs and A320CEO. That comes with the price of rather pale performance, but also gives the frame lower noise level and comparable fuel burn against 772, despite being a quad.

You miss a few points: 1. Inherting the structures built for A340, Airbus succeeded to make a once regional machine into sth much more capable. They did that to all their frames, but A330 is dramatic. 2. Many Asian countries are either isolated by waters, lacked of reliable infrastructures, or being a major manufacturer hub. Demands for air freights are thus significantly higher than their Western counterpart, and 757 or 767 simply can't carry containers in a way A330 or A300/A310 do. (Same reason why ovoid/double-bubble NMA lacked enthuasis here. If airlines go Boeing likely would be 787) 3. There's an A330 finishing line in China, so Chinese buying A330 is sort of supporting local employment.

For me, I'm a fan of the A330. The A330 was the first widebody aircraft that I ever flown. As an Indonesian, my first route that I flew the A330 for the first time was from Jakarta to Denpasar and I flew with Garuda Indonesia. Now, Garuda Indonesia operates A330s to busy routes such as: Jakarta to Makassar and Jakarta to Yogyakarta

I love the A330. I have been into A330-300 many times on domestic flights here in the Philippines. Very quiet cabin and comfortable even in ultra dense setting. It also has a great landing, most of the time, it is butter. Now, I am looking forward for the new A330-900 on my future flights.

I flew on an a 330 from Taipei to Singapore with China Airlines. It felt quite out of date compared to the a350 I had just taken from Vancouver to Taipei. Was glad the a350 was on the one I took on the 12 hour flight and the a330 flight was "only" 4.5 hours

In fact, when the A330-200 became available in 1998, it actually became the plane that quickly replaced all the DC-10's and L1011's out there, more or less. The A330-300 became popular in eastern Asia because it could fly longer routes in eastern Asia, for example, Tokyo to Manila, Singapore and Jakarta. Indeed, when the A330 (then called the *TA9* during development in the 1980's), it was intended for routes up to just under 6,000 nautical miles in range, something perfect for transatlantic routes between Europe and North America and longer intra-Asian routes.

A330 for example in Aerolineas Argentinas, is used in domestic flights (Buenos Aires-Ushuaia) and also in transatlantic flights like Buenos Aires-Madrid and Buenos Aires-Rome. It is such an versatile airplane!
