Although the French were forced to surrender Fort Vaux in 1916, the German Fifth Army respected their enemy's defense so much that their commander Crown Prince Wilhelm, the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II himself, personally visited the fort commander Major Slyvain-Eugene Raynal and gifted him with the sword of a French officer to replace the one that Major Raynal had lost during the siege. The French soldiers of Fort Vaux were so heroic that even the literal heir to the German throne honored them.

@@Daniel-wy2kx it’s an Easter egg in Battlefield 1, which is a game set around World War 1. There’s an Easter egg in the game where a door in the map Fort Vaux is chained up and it looks like is just part of the map, but if you hit it it makes noises like a monster/zombie is in there. The door is an isolation door, for shell shocked soldiers who need to be locked up because they went nuts from stress and shellfire. If you hit a series of buttons around the fort the door opens and you can go inside in look around. There’s another complicated Easter egg inside the Isolation room but I’m not going to get into that.

Anyone who sums up the French military history based on the circumstances of 1940 is an idiot. France, alongside Britain, has been one of the most powerful and influential nations in western civilization for a thousand years, that doesn't happen if you are a nation of “cowards” as some put it. Its actually quite disgusting how people make fun of the French veterans of ww2 especially when the fault lay with the French high command, not the soldiers. Is the U.S. military full of cowards because they lost the vietnam war? Defeated by an inferior foe? Iraq or Afghanistan? Are the veterans of those wars a bunch of cowards? Of course not yet some feel its okay to laugh at men who died fighting against literal nazi’s in a hopeless situation.... France is a great nation with a long and proud history and their performance at the battle of Verdun and the Somme prove that.

My Great grandfather was apart of the Argonne offensive in 1917. He witnessed America’s bloodiest battle in American history during the battle of Argonne forest. All his Comrades Died, we still have one of the bullets he kept in his ammo pouch, glad he did not die in battle. A generation lost to time, lest we forget.

"This, is Verdun Here, They Shall Not Pass!" As the Drumroll started on that day Heard a hundred miles away A million shells were fired, and the green fields turned to grey, The Bombardment lasted all day long Yet the forts were standing strong Heavily Defended, Now the trap's been sprung and the battles begun! Descend into darkness 303 days below the sun Fields of Verdun! And the Battle has begun nowhere to run, Father and Son Fall one by one, Under the gun Thy will be done, and the Judgement has begun Nowhere to run, Father and Son Fall one by one, Fields of Verdun Though a Million shells have scarred the land No one has the upper hand From the Ground above the Trenches Where the soldiers make their stand As the trenches slowly turn to mud And then quickly start to flood, Death awaits in every corner As they die in the mud, fill the trenches with blood Descend into darkness 303 days below the sun Fields of Verdun! And the battle has begun Nowhere to run, Father and Son Fall one by one, Under the gun Thy will be done And the Judgement has begun, Nowhere to run, father and son Fall one by one Fields of Verdun! Fields of execution turn to wasteland from the grass Though shalt go no further it was said, "They Shall Not Pass!" The spirit of resistance and the madness of the war, So go ahead Face the lead Join the dead Though you die Where you lie Never asking why Descend into darkness 303 days below the sun FIELDS OF VERDUN!!! And the battle has begun Nowhere to run, Father and Son Fall one by one, Under the gun Thy will be done And the Judgement has begun Nowhere to run, Father and Son Fall one by one Fields of Verdun -Fields of Verdun, Sabaton
