A True American Hero, John A. Chapman (July 14, 1965 - March 4, 2002) Combat Controller in the United States Air Force Battle of Takur Ghar, War in Afghanistan In 2003, Chapman was posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross for his courage, selfless dedication to duty that day and extraordinary heroism. But after a prolonged campaign, this was upgraded in 2018 to the US Armed Services highest award for bravery and valor, the Medal of Honour.

“Alone At Dawn”, the powerful story of Mark Chapman’s life and death is a gripping read/listen. His citation: "Technical Sergeant John A. Chapman distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism as an Air Force Special Tactics Combat Controller, attached to a Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) Team conducting reconnaissance operations in Takur Ghar, Afghanistan, on March 4, 2002. During insertion, the team’s helicopter was ambushed causing a teammate to fall into an entrenched group of enemy combatants below. Sergeant Chapman and the team voluntarily reinserted onto the snow-capped mountain, into the heart of a known enemy stronghold to rescue one of their own. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Chapman immediately engaged, moving in the direction of the closest enemy position despite coming under heavy fire from multiple directions. He fearlessly charged an enemy bunker, up a steep incline in thigh-deep snow and into hostile fire, directly engaging the enemy. Upon reaching the bunker, Sergeant Chapman assaulted and cleared the position, killing all enemy occupants. With complete disregard for his own life, Sergeant Chapman deliberately moved from cover only 12 meters from the enemy and exposed himself once again to attack a second bunker, from which an emplaced machine gun was firing on his team. During this assault from an exposed position directly in the line of intense fire, Sergeant Chapman was struck and injured by enemy fire. Despite severe, mortal wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a violent engagement with multiple enemy personnel before making the ultimate sacrifice. By his heroic actions and extraordinary valor, sacrificing his life for the lives of his teammates, Technical Sergeant Chapman upheld the highest traditions of military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force." The rest go to Hel or are stuck in the mortal realm as a ghost. There's also apparently another place for drowned sailors but that's seems more like a spiritual hostage situation.

@Somarik Green The drone video is on YT by a channel promoting the real story, book and "prolonged" campaign for him to get the CMOH. The only reason for the huge prolonged time are the SEALS. proving that in every group of people there are ASSHOLES. these guys did everything to hide the fact they wussed out when another soldier non SEAL was tougher and acted where they failed. this includes every doc movie you will watch on OP anaconda/ battle of Roberts ridge/ the campaign of MEDAL OF HONOR 2010 game (SEALs advised), in which the narrative is always how brave were the SEALS going back for one of their own. making their part bigger, and not even speaking about Chapman's part in the scale they should. The MOH doesn't just happen. It is a very prestigious award and it not taken lightly. The investigations and witness statements need to be collected and they need to recount what happened and what they saw. This process is also made much longer when the person is dead, as the primary source is dead. Yes, the navy did try to pretend this didn't happen for a couple years but it became public knowledge very quickly. In the end, he got the well deserved award, even though I would wager that the last thing on his mind that day was the MOH.

I was about to say... it is simply outrageous that he received anything less than the Medal of Honor. I will say this... I served in the military along side many of the special operations units, and the Air Force Air Traffic Controllers are always the least talked about, least recognized, most underrated special unit in our military. I was so impressed with the special units from the Air Force... the level of respect that have for these guys is tremendous. For example, during Operation Irene, in Mogadishu... the event upon which the movie Blackhawk Down is based, the movie mentions and recognizes the sacrifices and heroic actions of both the 175th Rangers and SFOD-D, but no one even mentions the fact that Air Force Air Traffic Controllers were extremely heroic during that battle and that they, especially one of them in particular, was almost solely responsible for the survival of the Ranger land convoy. That guy should also have gotten the Medal of Honor, like the two fallen Delta guys.

why couldn't the AC-130 take out the positions against Chapman 155mm howitzer?
@anthonypolonkay26813 жыл бұрын
@@PlateletRichGel Because gurella warfare tactics always win out if it's done persistently. Expensive military tech is never all its cracked up to be by movies, and video games, and on top of that its hugely expensive to purchase, and maintain any of it. So it will always be few and far between. While Chapman was brave, and that position was eventually taken, the insurgents won that fight by all counts. Its likely they killed just as many U.S soldiers as insurgents they lost. Not only that but they weren't even normal soldiers. They were navy seals, and army rangers that take alot of time, and money to train, and the insurgents were a bunch of random guys who got ahold of some weapons, and basic training, and went to town. And then on top of all that they incapacitated two very specialized chopper units, and if they could even be repaired properly it would likly cost more than it did to purchase them to begin with, as well as taking a lot of time. And all of that was accomplished with an ambush set up they can do almost anytime anywhere, and did do very consistently. It's why even though the U.S definatly has a much more dominating military capability than they did, the U.S never really won. Sure we drove them out of certain territories. And eventually head leaders like bin laden would get taken out. But that still never put a stop to the insurgencies. It continued on, and theres really nothing anyone can do to fight that kind of thing. So we eventually pulled back, cause there was nothing else to do besides keep spending money, and getting guys killed. Its the exact same reason we effectively lost Vietnam. We were a stronger military. But a war of attrition is something no large military can handle for long.
