He forgot to mention, the Pilum javelin's purpose and design was special. The long, skinny shank at the end was meant to pierce the shield of an enemy. I know he said that, but there was a 2nd reason. Once it penetrated, that skinny bar of metal would bend and warp. So it made it REALLY hard to pull it out of your shield. So a barbarian soldier would be forced to toss his shield away, leaving him way easier to kill. When that pilum hit your shield, you basically lost your shield all together.
@_gmmaann_3 жыл бұрын

this wasnt always the case, since marius, i believe, replaced one of the 2 -lets call them- screws with a wooden one that would break and bend the pilum on impact with the enemy shield. i dont hink they forgot to put that in there, its just not that important. i believe their video was one of the best to summarize the most imporant things in a legion (stretching over many centuries-pun intended).
@_gmmaann_3 жыл бұрын
@@bigboyxxxXxxx The Pilum was meant to do that though, and I feel he could have spared at least 5 seconds to add it.
@bigboyxxxXxxx3 жыл бұрын
@@_gmmaann_ i know they could, its just that you think of this one detail being important enough to make the cut, but they didnt. you could find a lot of "it just takes 5 seconds" stuff to put in the video, but then we would end up with an hour long version. some things have to be cut and its up to the guy who puts this together to decide. anyway, my intention was just to point out that he probably chose to leave that out. have a great day

Something to remember, until Servius Tullius came to power, the Roman army was a series of “war-bands” led by a chieftain. The soldiers in the band would typically have a helmet, made of either wood or metal, along with a small shield, with a lightweight spear meant to be thrown. The chieftain would also have a lightweight throwing spear and a shortsword. It was the sword that truly showed his authority. He would also have a more decorated helmet, made of metal.

Legions were raised in conquered lands but not allowed to serve in their own countries, specialist troops were also taken from conquered territories and attached to legions. In there operations in the east, their opponents were able to slice through the Roman helmet so ridges were added to stop it. The Pilum metal shaft was designed to bend on impact so that if it hit a shield it couldn't be removed and your opponent had to abandon his shield, also any Pilums that didn't find a target couldn't be thrown back.

One important aspect also was the psycological projection of organized force. Imagine yourself in a ragtag "army" of barbarians marching as a horde against a legion line and at the sound of a horn one thousand swords in unison are drawn and a thousand sheilds form a near perfect wall. The sight must have been awe inspiring.
@johnnyrocket16852 жыл бұрын
Personally, the only Roman battle I would ever want to witness would be the Battle of Teutoberg Forest. A Germanic “Barbarian” managed to rise in the ranks of the Roman Armies, and successfully convinced Rome to send 10,000 Pureblood Roman troops into the Teutoberg Forest. Arminius, the leader of the Teutoberg Protectors, had been raised as a Roman citizen and received superior education in Roman Military, and thus was able to use it entirely against them. . 10,000 Romans thankfully died that day, and it heroically halted nearly all forms of Roman expansion throughout the whole world. The battle of the Teutoberg Forest is considered the greatest defeat in roman history, and is almost solely responsible for Rome outright failing to further expand after that. The Heroes of the Germanic peoples proved that day that Romans were nothing more than rabid Dogs in need of being put down, and from that day forth, Rome began its Death Rattle.

I do believe this video is littered with mistakes. I’ll explain what I’ve found: @ 2:21 The Marian reforms changed eligibility for recruitment from those who owned property of a minimum value to the Capite Censi (by the head) system. It meant the landless poor we’re now eligible to join the legions, but they did have to be a citizen. It isn’t until hundreds of years later that the Emperor Caracalla extends the rights of citizenship to everyone who lives in the Empire. During the time of the Marian reforms, non-citizens could join the army and go into the Auxilia and were awarded citizenship upon retirement. They could NOT join the legions. Their sons would be citizens at birth, however, making eligible to join the legions despite their family originally coming from ‘outside’ of the Italian provinces/the Empire. The belt @ 6:49 is called a Cingulum. Balteus is the name given to the baldric that’s worn from the shoulder, from the Gladius in hung. The other type of waist belt is called a Cintus (see 8:27). @ 7:38 As far as the armour goes, the Lorica Laminata/Segmentata is plate armour, not really a cuirass type of armour. A typical cuirass used by the Romans was a solid one piece iron breast plate, often covered with leather and decorated to show muscles, reliefs of gods, or other patterns. They’re commonly called Lorica Musculata. @ 8:01 That’s a mistake in the narration, Lorica Hamata has on one ‘t’ in it. @ 9:03 The shield on the right of that picture is not a scutum, that’s a Parma. Soldiers such as the Signifer (Standard Bearer) would be equipped with that. I’m not a professional historian, but I grew up around an awful lot of Roman archeological sites, have been fascinated by Ancient Rome since I was a small child, and posses a large library of Roman history books. All the information I’ve given can be found in your typical shop bought Roman history books. I hope this was helpful 🙂

But "Comitatenses" were Legionaries(for example, also other classes of soldiers belonged to comitatenses). That term merely denotes status in hierarchy of late antiquity roman army not some new type of soldiers.

You forgot the most important part of the pilum. It wasn't really intended to kill, it was intended to disable the enemy's defense. Did it kill yes, but most of the time the pilum would hit the shield of the enemy. Then the spike would bend due the the weight at the connection of the point and shaft. This would mean removing it was awkward and the enemy couldn't use a shield with it stuck inside.

There's not too much to say as far as I'm aware most were forced or trained out if it. There is however a specific castle in Wales/Shropshire where the spiral staircase goes the other way to favour left handed defenders who were common to that specific group

For the Legion!!!!!! These look a lot like the Imperial Soldiers in Bethesda game Skyrim because they decided to rework the soldiers uniforms from full plated armor to Roman like armor. Edit: all to the point that the Emperor personal protection group had an italian name from the devastated Blades.
@hard_drive.system3 жыл бұрын
The empire itself clearly took reference from the roman empire for many things.

Full plated armor is expensive it makes more sense to have roman like armor for the common soldier

Simple History, I beleive you should have added a section talking about decimation. It was the killing of one in every ten of a group of people as a punishment for the whole group, for either abandoning the battle, or disobeying orders. Punishment was brutal, and usually followed by execution.

For reference modern soldiers gear can weigh up to 120 pounds. 50 pound backpack, 24 pounds of ballistic SAPI plates in plate carrier plus 26 pounds of E-tool shovel, magazines, extra ammo bandolier, water, small tools plus a 20 pound battle belt. Beyond this and you reach the maximum load bearing for healthy muscle and bones.
