Tab for Ukraine: tab.gladly.io/ukraine/
In the Russo-Ukrainian War, thousands of BTRs have been deployed and destroyed. Having already been often sighted within conflicts even as far as Afghanistan, Cuba, Egypt, and Iran during the Cold War, here we describe their various technical designs, how they have been continuously tinkered with, and their intended purposes. Beginning with the BTR-60 not long after World War II, and exploring their unusual amphibious capabilities, we conclude with the latest formidable BTR-82A and their impacts on the battle-zones.

There have been lots of cases where troops were run over trying to egress. The side door is a dumb design because it also creates weakness in the armour and the only reason for this is because it is cheaper and easier to maintain the engine if it is in the rear.
@Adierit
@Adierit Жыл бұрын
@@ingetout I wonder why they didn't try a boxer configuration engine in these and put it in the floor at the rear; that would provide the rear engine placement while also letting them make the crew compartment over top of it and having a rear exit door, although I guess it would be a little taller but I think that would be worth the maintenance/protection issues of placing the engine compartment in the front of the vehicle.
@PugilistCactus
@PugilistCactus Жыл бұрын
@@ingetout It really doesn't make any more weakness than there already is. The whole side is vulnerable to .50cal and up regardless of the door. Troop carriers are to protect you from small arms fire (mostly) not the stuff that makes you pop.

Despite how well known the BTR and other Soviet weapons are, the BTR-60/70/80's main armament: the KPVT heavy machine gun (KPV in its standard configuration) seems to get ignored. HMGs like the M2, DshK, and KORD are venerated for their 50 BMG/12.7x108 firepower, but the KPV fires the 14.5x114mm cartridge (the same used in the WWII PTRD and PTRS-41 anti-tank rifles) at 600rpm with 40rd belts (KPVT has unique 50rd belts). For the BTR this is serious firepower that outclasses the defensive capabilities of its own frontal armor, and could theoretically make short work of similarly matched IFVs, concrete structures, and anything in its effective engagement range. The KPV is probably outdated compared to modern 20-30mm auto cannons, but must have been formidable in the mid 20th century. Note: Edited to correct technical mistakes.

@@LegendStormcrow Kord is a modernization of the NSV Utyos cal. 12.7x108. This is a common weapon, but there is nothing special about it, it is close to the M2 in terms of capabilities. But the Vladimirov machine gun is a completely different matter, the bullet has an energy 32000 J, a rate of fire 550, and a mass only 53 kg. This allows you to punch btr anywhere at any angle from a distance of 2000 meters. The Ukrainian military even installed it on the Humvee.

Great video! Two things to mention though. 1. The BTR-50 was also a thing. The only BTR to use tracks, it was based on the PT-76 light tank and saw lots of use both with the USSR and export countries, some of which still use it in modified versions as IFVs or other roles. 2. Ukraine has developed several of their own Wheeled BTR vehicles, though in limited numbers. These include the BTR-7 (an upgrade package to the BTR-70), BTR-3 (all new and highly successful), BTR-4 (similar to BTR-3), BTR-94 (BTR-80 with a new weapon station, export only), and the Otaman (BTR-based, but massively upgraded and overhauled, 6x6 or 8x8).

БТР-50? Ukraine has developed an upgrade of the BTR-50 in 2019. 1 Replaced engine 240 to 400 horses and gearbox 2 A combat module with a 30mm cannon and an anti-tank missile system are installed. (From the BTR-4, this is already the modern, newest armored personnel carrier) 3 Slightly improve ballistic protection by installing screens in front of the caterpillar Yes, the tracked BTR-50 is the only one of the entire line of armored personnel carriers that is not on wheels. Any armor is better than its absence, and if this armor also knows how to swim, then it opens up great prospects. The modification was developed for the export of the upgrade service, but several pieces on which these modifications were worked out are used in UA + taken out of conservation and upgrade. PS Muscovites also have a modernized version БТ-3Ф same БТР-50, but upgrade and new name.

I think the BTR in itself is not the problem but rather how they employed this tool of war. Like all tools of war it is but cog in the overall warmachine. APCs are essentially war taxi's where a unit can transport infantry timely where it's needed. It's not meant to absorb high explosive damge hence it's needed to be protected by heavy armor and air cover and as of today drone attacks. It is also assumed that the army using the same will keep it fueled thoughout the campaign. Take for example, the Japanese Imperial Army which primarily used bicycles in their campaign of Malaya and advanced with relative ease because they had air cover and this secured their flanks from horizontal and vertical envelopment. The problem with current iteration of the Russian army is their lack of air cover and combined arms support for the movement of these very vulnerable but necessary equipment. It's as if they've forgotten how to fight a conventional war by spending to much time in greyzone warfare. The Ukrainians on the other went back to basics and used this things once they knew that the path was relatively secured.

The BTR's Design isn't easy for troops to dismount without the risk of being shot at in the flanks and in the rear unlike the M1128 Strykers and the M2 Bradleys that had rear panels for troops to safely dismantle under the cover of armor.

First, the M2 Bradley is an BMP(or IFV), which is a completely different vehicle, and second, if the driver mechanic came under enemy fire and went under grenade launchers without the cover of other infantry units, then either the APC commander is a fool, or the driver mechanic is drunk, or maybe both.

9:10 No there is no such option. If you decide to instal ERA on any ifv or apc you basicly turn it into a wheeled/tracked bomb. Armour of such vehicles isnt designed to survive explosion like this. Russian troops in Ukraine are doing it because they think it might help them, but in fact they just make infsntry work more dangerous.

@@JM64 No it wouldnt. It's 10mm steel plate. It wont survive such explosion. Further more, these apcs weren't designed nor tested with ERA. Extra weight puts additional load and makes parts wear faster, it reduces mobility, and wrongly placed, one explosion can lead to chain reaction of every piece instaled on the vehicle. As I said, its basicly a bomb on the wheels.

Back March or early April, there was aerial drone footage of a Ukranian ambush of a Russian convoy during that whole "stalled invasion" when a Russian convoy was stuck on a road headed for Kiev. One of the vehicles the Russians were using happened to be a turretless, roofless BTR-60P. I guess even then, they were desperate for men and vehicles to be calling those up from whatever was left in the border guards.

6:01 shows Ukraine soldiers (Ukrainian soldiers uses blue or yellow arm bands for identification) however the BTR in the background is sporting a Russian V symbol. Another inaccuracy is that u mention how Ukraine still uses BTR-70,although partly true Ukraine has built and fielded its domestically built BTR-3 and BTR-4 with the BTR-4 although being larger has capacity for 8 embarked troops and 3 crew members with the ability to carry a 30MM auto cannon (and in some cases a prototype 40mm) which is far superior to BTR-82s 30MM due to BTR-4 main gun having I believe gen 2 if not gen 1thermals and NVG sights.
