I would think you want your rafter on the edge of the roof to come straight down like the rest of them and then your hip rafter intersects that rafter at the corner point of your roof. Would be so much easier and proper to do it that way I would think.

May I just say I love the new intro: It is so amazing to look back at all you have done and been through and the cool part is I have followed you since the beginning. It seems like just yesterday though, time just flies. I still remember building the chicken pens and the incubation in AZ. Love how far you have all come and watching the kids grow up. Thank you for allowing me to come on the journey along with you all.

If you cut the heel backwards, it will fit the other end of the porch, then stick it up and scribe the top cut in. This will be your template, but the heel cut will be reversed for the right side. A better way to measure for these rafters is add a vertical board out where the heal is and run a string line up to the point on the band board. Then take all of your measurements from the string which represents the inner top edge of the 45 degree rafter. How high you place the string at the heal end is will be where3 normal rafters are installed, and a level extended out to to mark your string height.

You should have put those under existing roof instead of above.... it would have been easier.

I think the reason Gary went on top was because he wanted more heighth out front so when they looked ot the door and windows they could see the mountains. If they did it the way you suggest the roof would have to be lower for the pitch to allow rain water to run off. Therefore not allowing the view of the mountains they want.

Cutting off the eaves will change the structural integrity of the roof trusses. Once you cut that eave you cannot get it back unless you do a total roof rebuild. The cuts you are making are complex. How did you do in geometry in school? Your mathin’ won’t math if you don’t understand geometry and complex angles. It would benefit you to get a Structural engineer to give you guidance. Be careful guys.

hips and valleys. so a common roof has a ratio of 12 to what ever. for example 5 to 12 which is your slope. now hip or valley is based on 17 example 5 to 17. If you drew a square 12 by12 and measured the diagonal it would come to 16.97 which is your hip or valley. so if your your main roof is a 5/12 slope, on your speed square set it up to at a 5/12 slope but read the hip or valley part of the speed square

if it was me i would bring the rafters all way to edge of roof with the long cuts and then do a bevel cut on the 45* rafter and align with the facial will be a much more structural connection and cleaner line will also bring the porch roof blended with the house roof. if i knew how to send a drawing I would. then as extra look i would remove the overhang on the main roof at the porch and extend the wall framing up to porch rafter will make the porch feel much more open. just my options. Great Job you guys are doing learning as you go.

Hi Gary, just watching the struggle with that first board on the roof and reflected on previous comments, a good clamp may have been useful holding those boards when you first put them up. It would save Mel’s back from overstretching as she didn’t have a ladder at first. I am looking forward to this being done, when I saw Gary working off the top of that ladder I was cringing as a rule of ladder safety is not to use the top rung, I like a few extra ( like 1metre) to help me safely grab the ladder before climbing down. Just stay safe because I really enjoy you and your family and would like to see lots more from you over time. Great job despite my worries, if I was a Neighbour I would be there helping you but you are way across the ocean. I also note the middle beam is bowed towards the house, that will be a challenge to straighten as you mount the rafters.
@paulvanhouts3365
@paulvanhouts3365 4 ай бұрын
Just had breakfast and reflected on what I saw. When setting those angles, an easier way could be just using string lines from the roof to the beam. That way you’re not struggling with the weight often, just the least necessary. You could set a line for each side of the rafter it’s like someone drew the lines in the air for you. Try it out, I think small nails are all you need for that, when done just pull them out. Don’t cut off your roof at the edge, use the trusses to attach storm bracing to give your veranda rafters extra hold. If you are using hip valleys at the roof intersection you shouldn’t experience leaks, how you finish the tin under the valley may differ depending on your roof sheeting profile. In my house the roof was reasonably low and the valleys didn’t leak. I had a sheeting called trimmer which had 4” flat valleys. I made a tool to fold the valleys up to limit any wind blowback. Think about it. Take care.

I would recommend not putting in the ledger boards for the porch rafters because it's going to cause your porch roof to be higher than the house roof and allow water to penetrate under it. Also if u try to seal it so that doesn't happen it's going to cause a valley where the water from rain and snow melt won't run off like it should and you will end up having to replace your roof sooner than expected due to water damage

I agree with removing the ledger boards and cutting into the roof then attaching the walkway roof to the house purlins it will be easier to seal the two roofs to prevent any leaks or water sitting in a ridge unless you intend to fit batten boards on top of the Zipboard that are the same thickness as the ledger board this would remove the ridge. I reckon you’ve overthought this double roof twice over but the second time you started halfway through it so you have forgotten the first part.😂😂😂😂
