You should really be putting stickers(thin strips of wood) between each row of lumber. This will do several things, first it will aid in the drying of your wood, second it will help prevent mold and mildew from forming on the surface of the boards and third it will help keep the boards straight.

All that sawdust is excellent to use on paths between beds in your garden. Also mixed into compost or used to keep chickens dry and clean.

Great job ! You should cut some 1x1 stickers to stack your lumber on so it can dry, not mold and keep bugs out. Air gap between boards. I have a Wood Mizer LT 40 that has cut a lot of lumber for my Family.

1/2' thick by whatever width is plenty for stickers and will reduce the height of your stack. Use some of the slabs you had left over to make stickers. It doesn't matter if stickers still have some bark on them. After you use them a few times, the bark will fall off anyway. Just remember to place the stickers so they line up vertically and about 12 to 16 inches apart, and that will prevent most warping.

My granddaughter loves hers, and I'm just trying to find a place to hang mine. I'm actually considering ordering a couple of smaller ones as gifts. I truly hope you continue doing the calendars. Wow, that was pretty awesome work. My brother has a sawmill as well and had cut his own lumber and build a shop and nice wood shed. He had done construction his entire career from 13- until his 40’s than became a school maintenance man. He did everything, from fixing boilers, replacing roofs, and so much more for the entire Iditarod School District. Now, he is retired and has his 66th birthday yesterday. It is really hand and nice to have those building skills and ability to figure things out like that. You guys are doing an amazing job and I love watching all your vlogs. Consider making log bunks with flip down rails, the bunks and flip down rails could be made of wood. This allows you to set logs and simply roll them onto your mill. The flip down rail, wood or metal is so you can still walk through while cutting or roll logs onto the mill. Hope this really helps your back out of lifting.

Two more things You can use antifreeze or diesel for the lube Also you might want to sticker your wood( place small strips of wood in between your wood as you stack it) Helps the boards dry uniformly and keeps it from rotting and deforming😊

Especially antifreeze or diesel for the lube - a better lubricating fluid than water and does not freeze. And use is sparingly; more is not necessarily better! Many use diesel throughout the season!

I would discourage use of anti-freeze to lube the rails. The anti-freeze would be all over the rails and ground. Did you notice they have a cat plus two dogs? Animals are prone to licking anti-freeze. Use something else.

100% agree. And use a broom to really sweep off the sawdust on each board. Just a wipe with your hand won’t do it. I am afraid your hard earned stack will freeze solid and get damaged by freeze thaw.

If you paint the ends of each board it prevents the severity of the board splitting (checking) on the ends while drying.

you may want to sticker you 2x6s using scrap lumber 1 inch thick at 2 feet intervals this allows for the drying of you wood. It allows the air to flow through them and to keep them straight.

I believe the tool you used to turn the log is called a "cant hook" I guess cant is short for cantilever. Maybe someone out there can either confirm or correct. Pepper looks to cute on the wood pile. You both do great work. So glad you are appreciating the work you put into the cement pad for the saw! As mentioned in other comments, putting spacers between the boards will help them dry better.

Cant ho9k does not have a point on the bottom end. That is a pevy, that is the biggest difference. Sometimes the cant hook has a shorter handle.

Another interesting episode! I could get quite excited about milling wood. My Dad and both elder brothers were boatbuilders, so I was quite used to seeing lots of woodworking and even planks for boats being steamed/bent. There's nothing like the smell of freshly cut timber and sawdust. Handy hook modifications to the Branson - remember to use something like zinc paint spray and a top coat to keep the hooks/brackets rust free. Thanks again for a great video!

Ive used White Plastic a 4 mill to cover wood..Ive also used Silver Tarps. Keep the Drying slower or diffused keeps the water off as well. It's Gravy. Nice Mill.

Being able to weld is a must where you live. The climate in Alaska wears out metal w the extremes in temp. You two are really set up w the quanson building, your chickies are happy, eating well and comfortable there. It's a good life you are starting.. I watch a lot of off grid/cabin channels for information and inspiration as I continue building my off grid cabin on 17.5 acres. Over the past 5 years, I’ve learned to chainsaw, skid logs with an ATV, use a log splitter, bought a tractor with loader and forks, learned to use solar and batteries, installed a composting toilet… etc. All that to say, your channel is one of my absolute favorites. You both have amazing energy and positivity, are informative, and set great example of #RelationshipGoals. I’ve don’t my whole project myself, with a little help from buddies, but I could only imagine how much more fulfilling the experience would be if I were doing it with a strong woman by my side. The tool you were using to turn the log on the saw mill cradle is called a 'Can't Hook'. I used them a lot one Summer in the 1960's.

That's a peavey, it has a pointed end. A cant hook has a toe hook with teeth on the end. The swinging hook is the same on both.

When you go to cut the slabs into firewood stack it on your forklift then put a come along around the middle of the stack to hold it together. you can slice off your lengths right from the stack without fighting loose slabs.

You need to put lath between each layer to allow the wood to dry . If you can get yourself a bander band it into bundles and you can stack them if you need to but you will need to out lath or thin strips of wood between the stacks as well . Also please dont stand infront of a stack if logs with out stoppers on the rails as your cutting log rolls on to you the saw can hurt you and also you could be trapped under the log . Herd of many accidents due to this . Be safe .
