People just need to remember open source is only safe if it's been audited and verified. So it's not unreasonable to have trust issues. Having an open code doesn't mean much if nobody qualified to analyze it has gone through each line 🤷♂️. Your average user doesn't have the training to do it themselves.
@GodEmperorSuperStar Жыл бұрын
"Only safe if it's been audited and verified" OR if you wrote it yourself (3rd-party components, libraries, etc. not withstanding). That and there really is no such thing as "secure". Reality check: all you have is risk reduction.

@MrLoggfreak3 жыл бұрын
The only downside I see with AnonAddy is the bandwidth limit on their free and cheaper paid plan. This can definitely be abused by sending a small handful emails with attachments to someone's AnonAddy alias, to make the service start dropping emails. This is not a problem on their more expensive plan though.

I prefer AnonAddy because it doesn't force you to use email subaddressing (using + characters). Many websites don't support subaddresses and break if you try to sign up with them.
@techlore4 жыл бұрын
The directories are optional. You can just do alias@simplelogindomain.com (If the alias is already created of course) The domains just allow the creation of the alias without simplelogin
4 жыл бұрын
@@techlore That's right. I'd like to further explain how directories behave. It is a way for you to create aliases on the fly without going to simplelogin. Let say you are a hardcore shopper and you have a directory named "shopping", whenever you need to register to a new site/service, you don't need to explicitly go to simplelogin and create an alias before using it, juste type "shopping+randomname@asupporteddomain" and you are good to go. The first time an email is sent to "shopping+randomname@asupporteddomain", the alias is created automatically for you. Currently there are 4 supported domain: aleeas.com, slmail.me, simplelogin.co, simplelogin.fr
@112BALAGE1124 жыл бұрын
@@techlore Correct. To clarify my point, the SimpleLogin free plan allows only 15 aliases. I meant that if you wish to use more that 15 addresses for free, you have to use subaddresses or switch to AnonAddy, which offers unlimited aliases.

There’s a lot that I still don’t understand about this service, but doesn’t SimpleLogin become a hub for attackers, knowing a breach means access to that many more email inboxes? How secure and private is the personal email from being leaked to the outside? Would genuinely want to know

If I have already registered with my email to any service, that service has my email. So what's the point of using it in that case?
@Ranger107004 жыл бұрын
A use case that comes in mind is: let's say you decide to use SimpleLogin for *insert shopping site here*. 3 weeks later, *insert shopping site here* gets hacked and they get all current emails and hashed passwords, even if they figured out what your hashed password was, they couldn't then use "credential stuffing" to access your other accounts, even if for some reason you used the same password as another service. Seriously great tool. I would say that feature alone, even if you have given providers your real email before, is worth it. This tool almost completely eliminates the most common methods of credential stuffing, at least to my knowledge.

I don't understand what the practical use of SimpleLogin is. Even if you have a hundred alias email addresses, spam would still be sent to you as usual. The only difference is that the sender wouldn't know your real address. When you subscribe to certain services with a fake email address, you wouldn't just randomly delete that fake address either, unless you no longer want to subscribe to whatever is behind it.
@t83ndnsk3kАй бұрын
Think the only thing is if there is a data breach at say Reddit, the alias would be removed in the breach, not your real email. The alias just forwards to your real email

That helped me a lot, and the VPN I used too. The story goes like this; I entered my alias email and my password on a website I didn't trust, but you know a lot of websites were talking about it in a good way, so I trust it a bit but just to make sure that my email is save I used an alias email, and after few days I saw an email telling me my password which I generated it, and he said we would like to meet in someplace in London, because of the VPN he was thinking that I was living in London but I wasn't from there, so I deleted my alias email ASAP, so the VPN and SimpleLogin and generating a password saved me from the danger. Edit: from that moment, I always used alias emails in all of my accounts.

@Ranger107003 жыл бұрын
The problem with this method, while a neat solution, is that any potential hacker who gets access to your email is able to have knowledge of this as well, and while it will be pretty effective at keeping your other accounts like that, it means they will probably have access to at least your main email account. But just something to consider.

Works pretty good, only thing is that (on mobile at least) I can’t reply to emails. Which could be ignorable. You can just copy the “reverse alias” and send a separate email. Just not for instances when you need to directly reply to an email to confirm you have access to said mail.

why not just get your own domains and configure those to be catch-all accounts? I do this with Proton Mail 1. I have several custom domains configured with ProtonMail that are all configured to be catchalls. 2. next time I sign up to a newsletter, I just make up an email address on the spot -- newsletter@domain.com 3. all those emails dump into my overall Proton account. If I ever need to reply to one of the emails (which I've only had to do a handful of times), it's fairly easy in Proton to temporarily create any particular account, send whatever replies, then delete the account when I'm done. This way I end up with all of the hundreds of accounts I use having individual email accounts that I could easily move to another system if something happened with Proton.

I like the concept, but at first look I got the impression it's a bit messy and not the most intuitive thing. ProtonMail makes it pretty easy, and with a paid account, it's easy to add more aliases. It's more expensive, but really convenient. Another easy alternative is RiseUp, which I use most of the time. It's free, secure, and I think you've got unlimited aliases (not sure about that, but if there's a limit, I haven't hit it yet). Only drawback with RiseUp is that they have no 2FA and, of course, that people need an invite. But with a good password, I don't think that the lack of 2FA is so bad. I trust RiseUp pretty much. Have you tried some of those? How'd you say they compare to SimpleLogin?
