@@daisy180709 Miss Anti-Midas, so called because all the gold she touches turns to flesh, visits the local museum. By weird coincidence, it’s exhibiting its gold collection and the dozy security guard can barely stay awake. Perhaps he was enthralled by the exhibits; which consisted of Jim as an Egyptian mummy, Mick in his underpants and a trio of face masks. All painted gold. So she steals the face masks, drives them home, and presumably uses Jim, Charlie and Mick as her personal slaves whilst she lives a life of luxury. I guess this was the idea pitched to the band. And, for some inexplicable reason, they went for it. Even the shots of the band performing were amusing: Drumming was provided by a disembodied arm at the front of the scene; despite a deck chair being on set, no-one could stand, so they had to perform either crouching or sitting; and everything was covered in gold bacofoil as far as the eye could see. The girl from the Love Song and Promised You A Miracle videos reappeared to play Miss Anti-Midas; and Derek and Mike were conspicuous by their absence (I assume they either saw the script and decided to spend the day in the bar or the plot of the video couldn’t be stretched to include all five members). Gloriously mad. (Towards the end of the video, Miss Anti-Midas relaxed and read a gold magazine. The title of the page looks like Simple Minds but appears to be Simple Pleasures.)

@@daisy180709 How does someone come up with a bassline like that? I'm not a musician but I've messed around with stringed instruments. Bassists are usually underrated, especially ones who are melodic. Those thick strings and that long, wide fretboard take some serious skill and stamina just to deliver the basics, let alone master. Derek does a bit of everything here without ever getting too fussy or showy. The punchy deep stuff and those fluid runs and curlicues. It wouldn't be the song it is without him.

Almost 51, and yes this was the golden age of music. Can´t get out of it, or won´t. There´s houndreds and houndreds of awesome songs from that time, and I keep on listen to them. No matter which type it is. Pop, rock, electronica or danish. It´s just impossible to decide what is best. Well some are better than other, but hey it ´s the 80s and you just have to respect how music was made back then. And I will forever remember it until I die. The only thing that scares me, is that the great artists from our youth now are disappering one by one. A little peace inside me break off, everytime one of them leaves us. Too bad but difficult to escape from. Hugs to all that might see things the same way.. -K from CPH/DK

I wonder if anyone had the same experience....when this came out in 1982 I spent so long trying to tape it off radio, but as the vocals came in some quickly I always missed it. So the version I've always listened to starts halfway through 'shine on...' ;-)

In 1982 I was a sophomore in high school and thought that glittering gold model was indeed a prize for any teenager. Now 53, she still is. Wow! This song gained greater significance to me as I went on the graduate from a midwestern school with an iconic gold lady atop a dome. Simple Minds is a musical treasure. Hail, Scotland and the City of Glasgow. Truly beautiful.
