You Sir have created a monster! My 12 year old Grandson has been on a "build the windmill" mission for a year now. Last weekend he stayed the night and we found your simple bicycle wheel ideas. We built one that is outside turning now. One more is in the stages of construction. He will be down again to work on it. I doubt he sleeps soundly while the windmills turn in his mind. He is very mechanically and is a likely 4th generation maintenance man.

Very Cool windmills! i have a question when using old bicycle wheels should you re-grease them for a smoother function, or is there another method that doesn't create resistance?

When using old wheels, yes, I do like to disassemble the hub and repack the bearings with new grease. You need specific tools for that job, so it's not something everyone can easily do. But if you have the proper "cone wrenches", it's not a difficult job. When reassembling, I like to keep the bearings a bit loose (looser than it would be for actual bike riding). Note that cartridge-style bearings (that are often found on higher-end wheels) are not easily adjustable, so traditional "cup and cone" bearings work the best for this application.

Thanks for your question. Here are some of the types of specialty tools I used, with time stamps: 1:53 - metal snips, straight cut 2:20 - sheet metal folding tool 2:57 - standard drill and bits for metal 3:22 - hand pop rivet tool, with 1/8” rivets
