None of that press wood & falls apart when it gets wet. REEL WOOD. Thank you for being a women of integrity to the craft that we all need. People would pay hundreds of dollars for these pieces of furniture you build in a high price store. But you give them to us for free. I think I can speak for a lot of us that are on a tight buget or don't want to pay a ridiculous price for a piece of furniture that's going to fall apart in a couple of years, BC my kids are rough housers & could tear down a steel house, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF ARE HEARTS. You always have great plans. One question on this table: no one can sit at the end - wouldn’t it work better if the frame was reduced in width or else top made bigger?
@redcctcsessoms13 жыл бұрын
I would think that depends on each person's needs. If you want seating at the ends.....just use longer boards on the top surface. The legs and base wouldn't need to change.

Looks good - couple of comments: I would have applied finish/stained/painted the components before assembly to make it easier . . . and screwed a couple of battens across the underside of the top to stop it potentially splitting, even though it's glued, along the joins (and if you have them using clamps - or even a luggage strap as a tourniquet - to pull the top boards together when gluing and screwing)
@AnaWhiteDIY3 жыл бұрын
Great suggestions! Thank you for watching Rob:)
@michaelrichter33833 жыл бұрын
Nice Anna, super simple. I'm going to build one. Trick for keeping the wood from splitting when screwing close to an edge. Run 'em backwards for 5 ish seconds, then drive them in. Full Credit to fellow YT'er Home RenoVision DIY Jeff Thorman for that tip. It works, at least it has for me.

Great, simple video! I do have a question about the diagonals. I know you were checking them for square, but I’m confused about what adjustment you made to the longer measurement. If it was already screwed in, how did you adjust it? Or, did I misunderstand? 3:20
@AnaWhiteDIY3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the project even after frame is assembled, you tweak it until the diagonal measurements match. At that point you put a back on your project to keep it square, or in this case the tabletop. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWrdpZeJoqp1bKc
@Romans828girl3 жыл бұрын
My question is, How did you maintain the square while sanding? I would have thought that the safest thing would be to sand and then check for square. Or did you recheck after sanding?
@jaysnipe0909093 жыл бұрын
Nice looking table. Concerned about wood movement though. Glue to hold the top is asking for a split.
@ZeoCyberG3 жыл бұрын
Indoors, in a modern home, generally not a issue because they're conditioned and thus stable year round. Outdoors is where you'll run into issue but you would build differently for outdoors anyway... While you could always use a veneered plywood table top, much more stable than regular wood...
@jaysnipe0909093 жыл бұрын
@@ZeoCyberG You would be surprised how often a poorly assembled table top splits, especially 2+ years. My point being, why not use another effective way to attach the top, such as Z fasteners etc. If you’re going to the trouble of building the table, you want it to last.
@ZeoCyberG3 жыл бұрын
@@jaysnipe090909 No, I wouldn't be surprised. I just also know even well made furniture won't necessarily last a long time if not properly taken care of or kept where it wasn't designed to be left or used in the wrong way. While even badly built furniture can be made to last a long time under the right conditions... There's often more to it than just how it was build... Besides, this is a project for beginners to show it can be done without already being a knowledgeable woodworker with a well equipped shop... Just construction lumber, easy to use basic tools, and just be able to follow some easy to follow steps and instructions... It gets the job done and if it inspires interest then they can learn more advance woodworking... While others don't have to invest more into than they may want to just to try it...
@Romans828girl3 жыл бұрын
So it looked to me like Ana only glued the tabletop pieces to each other, not the tabletop to the frame. I thought when I saw that that it must be OK, because the tabletop pieces would expand and contract at the same rate as the other tabletop pieces. Is gluing the tabletop pieces together taking a chance on cracking? Or did I just misunderstand and she actually did glue the tabletop down to the frame? I'm a newbie and I need all the help I can get.
@ZeoCyberG3 жыл бұрын
@@Romans828girl She glued both and pin nailed the table to the frame... There's a lot of variables to wood movement. Different species of wood, grain pattern and how they were cut, how much tension is in the wood, how much moisture was in them at time of construction vs normalized levels later, seasonal changes in humidity levels, how thick the pieces are and exposure to the air, etc. can all effect wood movement, how much it'll move, when, and whether or not it'll be significant enough to be a issue or whether you can take advantage of it to make the piece stronger like how old green wood furniture was made. However, that's rather advance for beginners to handle and this is meant as a simple and easy DIY for beginners with probably limited tools. Generalizing, the table top is what will move the most and the difference between it and the frame is the main concern. But in dry climates with wood already stabilized and used indoors in a conditioned space that will stay about the same year round there will usually be very little movement and you can get away with quite a bit. Especially, once stained, paint, etc. as that'll help stabilize the wood... Veneered or plywood options are often used because they are more stable than natural wood and would be even easier for beginners to make long lasting furniture with... Just depends on your budget, tools you have available, and how you want the piece to look... If concerned about how the table top is attached, the nails have some allowance because they can flex and move a bit, just not good long term as they'll loosen and back out... You can wait till the table top is cured and fully glued into one piece and then attach it at only the middle with screws that you can drive from underneath to keep them hidden and additional screws by widening the hole a small bit to allow some movement to side to side. There's also types of adhesives, usually used in construction, that will remain flexible and allow some movement without breaking the bond. Alternatively, you can use boards to make up the table, instead of making a monolithic solid tabletop, and just keep them 1/8" apart like placing deck boards, which would make it able to handle even more movement and is one of the ways to make it work for outdoor use. Other options, like pocket screws have a little give to them and is one of the reasons they're often used... There's also table fasteners that have slotted screw holes to allow movement without needing specialty tools to make grooves for z-fasteners, etc. Along with figure 8, etc. options that you can explore but make sure you use properly as they often allow movement in only one direction and only a certain amount... While, projects like this can be a way to get your proverbial feet wet into woodworking and you can be free to experiment and learn from practice or just have a nice looking piece of furniture that won't cost much and you can just replace later and even recycle the wood for other projects. It doesn't have to be perfect and it can still last many years before there's issues, depending on the environment where it's kept.. But dealing with problems is a good way to expand your knowledge as there's many ways to fix things too and can help some better understand the nature of the wood and how to work with it...
