About your question around 10:00 the blob fish that everyone thinks looks ugly lives around 600-1200m down. they only look ugly because they live in a higher pressure and loses its shape when we bring them closer to the surface. so i think its a good guess that fish wouldnt look very fish like from an even deeper level

also if you live with a lot of pressure your body will counter it by pushing outwards. So bringing a deep sea creature up to the land will make it explode. Just like us in space because the air inside of us pushes outwards.

Even though outer space represents a lack of air pressure, which usually counters the internal pressure in our bodies, our tissue is strong enough to handle the imbalance. 9:50 this is actually a problem for scientist. When a died colossal squid was found they would have to get the squids body under pressure fast or else it literally starts falling apart. The muscles and insides detach from each other.

It's honestly kind of crazy that these animals( and submarines) can survive that amount of pressure on them down there. I wonder how they do it, they must have some sort of reinforced skin and organs or bones or something.

I believe it's more that their innards are at the same insane pressures. Also probably less hard shells that break and more squishy stuff being compressed. But then again I'm no specialist or anything

That’s because Deep sea animals (those that live from the Mesopelagic zone aka twilight zone and downward ocean zones) like the Anglerfish, Fangtooth, Goblin shark, Dragonfish, Vampire squid, Giant Oarfish, Viperfish, Snaggletooth Fish, Blobfish, Giant Isopod, Giant Japanese Spider Crab, Mariana Snailfish, Gulper Eel, Tripod fish, Giant Squid, have completely different cell membranes, and unlike epipelagic zone residents, deep sea creatures have no air spaces in their body, and they’re made up entirely of water.

It’s because they don’t have lungs. The pressure inside their bodies is equal to the pressure outside, so it doesn’t crush them. Land animals like us have lungs and other air pockets in our bodies. That’s why it would crush us.

I remember reading a Article written by Mr. Piccard himself in a oceanographic Book, where he and Mr Walsh were surprized speechless seeing some sort of flat Fish slowly swimming away after the Dust cleared up from the Trieste hitting the Floor. Also the Trieste was equipped with Emergency-resurface-Automatics, as a heavy Load of Ballast only was held by Electromagnets, so that if anything happened and power went out, it would automatically resurface. The big red Hull is just a thin Sheetmetal Tank filled with 85m3 Benzin (Gasoline(?)) which lets it float due to it being lighter than Water. while diving the Benzin got compressed and theWater entered the red Hull and by resurfacing the Benzin would gain Volume again and press the Water out. The Compartement for the Crew ist just the small white Capsule underneath the red Hull, made of 25cm thick german Krupp-Steel.

The decompression thing with the slow ascend only applys if you dive with a bottle. If you freedive the air in your lungs gets compressed on your way down and decompresses on your way up. With oxygen tanks however the air you breath in when you are down decompress when you go up which can be harmful if you ascend to fast.

I dont need to travel around in my life... except if i receive some kind of important mission that requires me to do so. The fuel i am burning to move might be needed elsewhere to create needed materials, electricity or to survive the winter. Maybe sailing, biking, walking or letting myself being hired on a commercial tanker/transporter to get where i need to might be more my style rather than taking flights. An exception is my stupid life goal of seeing a tornado live once in my lifetime. I hope i am (un-)lucky enough to achieve it here in germany, but i might need to get to the US to achieve it. I have never taken a plane before.

Hey, just ran across your channel and have been watching quite a few things of yours today. This video reminded me of a documentary you might find interesting (and horrifying) if you haven't seen or heard of it called "Last Breath" about divers that had to deal with an accident 100m below the Black Sea, repairing an oil line I believe. I recall it being good, but awfully spooky stuff. While you might have your fears of the sea, you might find the story amazing if for no other reason because it actually happened and uses a lot of real footage from the event. I know its on Netflix, in the US at least.

Honestly, I think I'd take the bottom of the ocean. Both lost in space and lost at the bottom of the ocean are certain death, but at the bottom of the ocean I'd be crushed damn-near instantly. A single flash of pain and then nothing. Out in space, however, I'd either have to take off my helmet and suffocate slowly, or keep the space suit on and starve to death / die of thirst. Obviously I would prefer to do neither of those things, and I have no plans to either go out to space or down to the ocean's depths (not that I'd be qualified to do either). Nevertheless, if I had to be put into any circumstance where death was the only possible outcome, I'd generally prefer to die quickly. If the options were the bottom of the ocean or being tortured to death, for example, I'd still choose the bottom of the ocean.

11:08 I'd rather be floating in space, especially if I'd be near a planet. Any of the gas giants would be fascinating to see from a few million kilometers (that's up close in gas giant dimensions). Closer than 1 million kilometers would be frightening though, especially Jupiter and Neptune.

Here is a great little math(s)/geography project for you to do with your students - figure out how rough or smooth the surface of the Earth is relative to a size they can relate to. I did this out of curiosity one day by calculating surface differences as if the Earth were 1 meter in diameter, a good easy metric scale because the Earth's avg. diameter is 12,742 km making the scale 1:12,742,000 (I'll warn you, calculators hate this scale.), and was amazed at how smooth the Earth is at this scale. It requires some simple math(s) but it is a great way to put things in perspective. Basically if you were some massive Lovecraftian alien and ran your massive hand across the Earth it would feel pretty smooth with a few minor pits here and there hardly noticeable unless you looked close. Another exercise in how small and insignificant we are in the greater scheme of things.

And even if someone was stranded it's more than likely it's just you in your space suit floating off into the unknown. You only have yourself; your thoughts to reconcile your death with. Titanic, Britannic, and Olympic were sisters, Lusitania was a competing ship from a different company that happened to look similar. Also, as a fellow fuck that when it comes to the ocean, I feel EXACTLY the same way for the same reasons. Call me a coward, I do not care. If I cant see it I don't want it the thought of ANYTHING I can't see being below me while I am in a vulnerable position is just a big nope. Also, I have been told, I am not sure its true though, that US Naval personnel who work in subs' next of kin or listed beneficiary of their will gets a letter informing them that if the sub goes down there will never be a chance of body recovery because of De-Pressurization. Its terrifying. So incredibly terrifying to think about. Submariners are a different breed.
