On December 13th, 1916 at 5 AM, known as White Friday, a series of avalanches hit both Austro Hungarian and Italian barracks and basically buried them with everyone inside. People reported afterwards that both Austro Hungarian and Italian troops fired artillery at the loose snow on the mountains to cause avalanches on each other's side. The total death toll is unknown, but approximately 2000 soldiers died and a dozen civilians. Many of the bodies were never found. Some are being found nowadays with the ice on the mountains melting more and more due to climate change.

@@sovietorca810 from what i read, all those avalanches didn't really happen all at the same day. we are talking about like 7-10 days, with unnaturely many avalanches, with casualties in about 10.000 in tellings, it was just combined into a single phrase "white friday"

Their music is so energetic and heroic. And you're a teacher. I am so jealous of your students if I even think about they are learning history from Sabaton with you!😜 I was so lucky to see them live on their great tour in January 2020 just before this damn pandemic started to get really worse. What can I tell you, it was the best show I ever saw in my life. They are even more energetic on stage than you might think of the videos. Sabaton is with heart and soul truly an absolute live band. Your reactions are so great bc they make me sing along with you! I agree that their songs totally pump you up. I use that energy to work out as they are a great motivator. When Sabaton had to end their American tour with Judas Priest abruptly in Colorado, they got a new venue together in less than 24 hours and sold out all their tickets. One of the cool things they did is that they had so many band shirts that they had been planning to sell specifically for that tour but no longer could that, they gave every single concert attendee a free shirt. That was my first Sabaton band shirt. Along with the fact they played for nearly three hours and I caught Chris Rörland's pic, it was a very special and amazing concert. My favorite shot from this video is the M-190 that frames Hannes on the drums as he pulls everyone back into the chorus. In terms of history, this is referencing the Austro-Hungarian and Italian front that was in the Alps. Soldiers literally dug their trenches into the rock and ice and stayed there for long periods. In 1916, there was a series of avalanches that were caused by the spring thaw as well as intentional shelling that buried the Austro-hungarian troops alive. This became known as White Friday and you can hear that reference in the song lyrics. Besides just that day, many other avalanches occured from artillery fire burying both sides' soldiers in ice and snow, killing hundreds. Besides those soldiers swallowed up by the mountain, many others froze to death. A very small percentage of those bodies were recovered and most still remain where they fell over 100 years ago.

Oh well, I was holding off on listening to this after the glory of "Christmas Truce". I shouldn't have; this song adds gloriously to the modern "Tanzmetal" wave washing Scandinavia's shores lately, including BEAST IN BLACK, AMARANTHE, AMBERIAN DAWN, to name a few... AND, SABATON always have a story that is epic beyond belief but also gruesomely real, and humanly touching. In this, they are alone. A gratuitous idea: 3:50 you might also consider getting a pair of sabatons! You would look as Metal as a galant knight arriving at a tournament once you go to the concert. :)))

This song is about the White Friday Avalanches, when 270 Austro-Hungarian soldiers were killed by an avalanche on Mount Marmolada in 1916. Other avalanches hit other Austro-Hungarian positions, killing more soldiers in the process. So the idea of the song is to tell the story of the men who really were just doing their duty when a monstrous disaster struck. It's suggested that about 2,000 soldiers died in the avalanches that day, along with some civilians.

Yes and no, white friday is alpine rangers on the mountain that died after one avalanche. So it is a specific event. It was impossible to get them down and the where burried under the snow

Dang…I wanted to rag on them until the dedication at the end. I am an 80’s chick (Depeche Mode, B52’s, REM, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, old punk like Sex Pistols, The Ramone’s, etc) that discovered harder music through my husband (Metallica, Disturbed, Scorpions, Ozzy). It’s like cooking, you try hamburger helper then move to filet mignon. I reserve my judgement for now until I listen more. Right now, the music is not for me. Music is about emotions in my opinion. Nirvana (dark and angry), Marley (feel good with a political movement-and why he sang his songs)…I like the Bee Gee’s and LOVE Rammstein, Nirvana, Yo Yo Ma, Kaki King…no accounting for taste. Off to listen more.
