@@9inchpp This one probably does only long range flights, so its cycle count would be quite low and it should have a long life. Interestingly, it's long ago predecessor as the top long range Soviet/Russian airliner, the Tu-114, also had an excellent safety record.

@@mvd4436 No idea if they plan to give it the name IL-96M, the original Western engine powered IL-96 was the IL-96M, which fell thru and was never produced. A 2 engined Il-96 would be fairly promising on paper, however I doubt any timelines shown by UAC, given the many issues they had with the MC-21.

Indeed, the IL-96 is the "Sir " of Soviet aviation design and engineering, beautiful aircraft, what a wonderful way to cross the Atlantic Felix. This aircraft is not that old, there is a holiday airline in UK that are flying people to places like Ibiza on old 33 year old Boeing`s ! Older than most of their passengers !

"one of the world's last Ilyushin IL-96". I think the author mistook it for IL-86. Actually IL-96 is relatively new - introduced in 1992, still produced, still in use and there hasn't been a single accident involving IL-96. Not a single casualty in almost 30 years of operations.

What a beautiful airplane! I am accustomed with aircraft not having onboard entertainment system (on our airline nowadays, you're glad to be even flying) but the onboard cameras really surprised me. It's a nice feature for passengers. Another thing I am glad for is that clapping after landing didn't die out for Cuba. I believe that even though pilots may not hear it, it's a way to thank all the crew that took care of the passengers (mainly flight attendants).

Even if cold war is supposed to be over for 30 years, I can tell you the Concordsky Tu-144 rip-off memory is still very vivid in the EU and russian collaboration is down to the minimum if it even exists. The only russian bit I could ever imagine in an Airbus would be outsourced parts. There may have been a couple russian "transfuge" (escaped) engineers at Airbus but that's it. Great catch man! I would love to fly on this or any Russian Plane. Russian planes, while not technologically advanced and gas guzzlers, were built like tanks. Many western aircraft cannot land on some of the runways that the TU 154, 134 and other can land on because they are built for our world. Sam Chui covers this well too. The designs are different and look damn cool. Love it.

Interesting to see a quite recent flight on a Soviet/Russian aircraft. At one time I used to fly pretty regularly on a smaller Soviet aircraft the Tupolev 134 between Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam, where I lived for a few years in the early-mid 1990s, I believe most of these aircraft then in use in Vietnam had been acquired from Interflug, the East German airline, when East Germany was absorbed into West Germany to form today’s Germany. They were reputed to be better maintained than aircraft acquired from the USSR. They were comfortable enough to fly in with notably shallow lengthy and smooth takeoffs & landings, with the cabin becoming foggy with water vapour from the air vents, specially at takeoff, but their somewhat patchy safety record did give one pause.
