Mihrimah Sultana was the most powerful Ottoman Princess. She was first princess to rule the harem and took all positions of her late mother. Became royal advisor to her father Siltan Suleiman and also an acting Valide Sultana (acting Queen Mother) of her brother Sultan Selim II. She made the imperial treasure so rich.

Hurrem was first to start doesn't mean that nobody can be stronger than her. Hurrem derived all her powers from Suleman while Kosem was powerful with Ahmed and more powerful without him. Kosem was most powerful sultana ever. Most people who are saying that Hurrem was most powerful actually admire the woman who played as Hurrem sultan in magnificent century because she is very beautiful and has charismatic personality.

Hurrem sultan was the first woman who got freed from slavery , became sultan's legal wife , carried more than one child , changed so many traditional rules, was the first haseki sultan( who established the tittle' haseki sultan') , a keen advisor of sultan , had political influence even outside ottoman empire, managed haram like a valide sultan during her husband's reign, had her own palace and tiara, lived in capital with her husband entire life, correspondent to foreign country's ruler during sultan's absence , had the right to use sultan's seal during his absence , protected her children through her life( mehmed was killed during her absence), establised mosques and many institutions , and died gracefully in her husband's arm. Meanwhill kosem sultan was 4th haseki sultan( because hurrem sultan established the tittle) , didn't have political influence during her husband's reign, became valida sultan early because her husband died early but got vanished to old palace after her adoped son sat on throne , again became valide sultan bcz her son murad sat on throne as he was young she became nayed ( bcz it was according to rule) , but even after becoming valide sultan and nayeb she couldn't protect her children, lastly to keep in her hand she killed her son and later tried to kill her grandson. Still couldn't protect herself and got killed by Turhan sultan . She didn't/ couldn't change any rule . She tried to change the tradition of killing other princes after a prince sat on throne but couldn't change that . In short her life or power was in vain. She was nothing compared to Hurrem sultan . Same goes for nurbanu and safiye sultan. They didn't have half of the power Hurrem sultan had . Hurrem sultan was the smartest, strongest and most powerfull sultana of ottoman empire . It's not my opinion . It's a fact wheater anyone accept it or not. Yes, nurbanu , safiye , kosem and turhan did fly really high but hurrem is the one who gave the wings . You don't need power to follow rules but you need power to change the rules. She is the sultana who started the sultanate of woman . She is a legend .

@Wandanes Excuse me. Kosem is nothing in front of Hurrem sultan. And who told you Hurrem sultan didn't have power outside harem. Hurrem was way much more powerful not only outside harem but also outside ottoman empire. She used to maintain diplomatic relationship with other kings. Hurrem sultan maintained royal fund too. Hurrem sultan didn't need to fight with other woman in harem bcz after falling in love with Hurrem sultan Sultan Suleiman didn't slept with any other woman. Kosem had power bcz sultan Murad was young. With her so called power neither could she saved her children nor herself. Her whole life and power was useless. You are right I shouldn't compare Kosem to Hurrem sultan. It's a shame for Hurrem sultan.

I’m my humble opinion, all of these women were strong leaders. They all influenced the empire. All of them overcame being slaves, and made incredible sacrifices and were incredibly influential in a time when women had no influence. They all gave to their community in a way no sultan did. As I said I believe they were all included leaders in their own way. Once the time of the female sultans ended, that is when the empire started its down fall.

Hurrem is the Legend even after 600 years, considered as the most powerful Sultana in the Ottoman Empire . She broke the glass ceiling for royal women and started Era of Sultanate of Women. Her story is an inspiring look at how one woman can bring so much influence and change to a leader and an empire, even if husband stands behind you! Hurrem’s power in the Sultan’s court grew stronger with every passing year. As Navagero wrote in 1553, “there has not been in the Ottoman house a lady that has had more authority.” Her authority showed not only in her firm grip over Suleiman’s heart but also in her ability to compete with the male rivals in Suleiman’s court, and to be a skillful sovereign and ruler. Suleiman the Magnificent repeatedly came to her for counsel and even appointed her as his STATE ADVISOR in foreign affairs, which allowed her to act as a diplomat with foreign powers. Also, it’s recorded by history that she was official Divan member, attending meetings, voting, listening to males and taking part of the meetings “under the dome”, which is called the Kubbealtı. Only men were doing this before her. Hurrem also had a seal, that allowed her to correspond to MALE rulers and kings around the world. Before that females of the empire were only allowed to correspond with female rulers (like empress or queen : Russia and England) or princesses. Hurrem acted as a diplomat with foreign powers through her letters using the title of Shah (queen), from the day she became first and only wife of Padisah in Ottoman history. It is seen that his signature is always referred to as " The State of İsmetlu Hürrem Shah Sultan Aliyyetü'ş-Şân". Hurrem also ruled the empire when Sultan was away on wars, signing important documents on his behalf and receiving diplomats and foreign ambassadors. Hurrem was a keen advisor to Suleiman in political matters, particularly when he was absent from Istanbul on his numerous military campaigns. She regularly sent letters to the Sultan, in which, in addition to expressing her great love and longing for him, she also informed him of the situation in the capital and of any events that required his immediate attention or action. In being thus vigilant, Hurrem protected Suleiman’s interests and contributed to the success of his reign. There is no doubt that Suleiman trusted her more than he did his male advisors. Hurrem is known to have been very generous to the poor. Not only did Hurrem Sultan exercise unprecedented influence on state politics as Suleiman’s chief advisor and diplomat with foreign powers, but she was also fully devoted to philanthropy. Hurrem’s charitable work surpassed any of Ottoman women in volume and geographic reach. She gave inordinate sums of money to help the poor and needy, she built and sponsored endowments (waqfs) in cities like Istanbul, Constantinople, Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baghdad, Konya, Edirne, Bulgaria. Her major charitable projects include: ✔️Haseki Sultan Complex in Istanbul-(Haseki Hürrem Sultan Külliyesi) that consists of a Friday mosque, a soup-kitchen (imaret), a madrasa, an elementary school (mektep) and a hospital(Haseki Dar al-Shifa). The latter is still used as a polyclinic by Haseki State Hospital. ✔️ Two Quranic schools ✔️ Women hospital near the women's slave market (Avret Pazary). ✔️Hurrem Sultan Fountain in Istanbul, Sultanahmet area, a landmark in Istanbul and favorite spot for tourists for taking vacation photos with beautiful background. ✔️ Hagia Sophia Hurrem Sultan Bathhouse (Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı)- receives guests and tourists daily and is now operated by Haseki Tourism Group. ✔️ Khaseki Sultan Complex in Jerusalem, that included a mosque, large khan (inn)-caravanserai for travelers and merchants, a 55-room-shelter for pilgrims, a bakery for the conduct of charity services for the poor, flour mills, water mills, soap factories, an area with cellars, public toilets, stables and a soup kitchen “Haseki Sultan Imaret” serving more than 500 Jerusalem's paupers, al-Aqsa's needy worshipers and seminarists. Most of the buildings, apart from the lodge and the mosque, are still standing today. The charitable soup kitchen called “Takiyah Khaski Sultan Al-Imara” works to present day, with two meals still being served to the poor and homeless according to Hürrem's original recipe! ✔️ A caravanserai, mosque and soup kitchen built in the city of Svilengrad , Bulgaria, the name of which was Cisr-i M Ustafa Pasha at that time. ✔️Charitable soup kitchens “Haseki Imarets” in Edirne, Mecca, Medina, Konya, Baghdad. ✔️At one point Hurrem even sold her own gold, pearls and jewels to pay for Janissaries’ (Ottoman soldier’s) boots and a hike in their pay. Apart from these Hurrem is also known to frequently send her embroideries and handmade perfumes to slaves, poor women and Harrem concubines. Hurrem was the first in many things. Even where she was buried was a first. Suleiman buried her in his mosque complex. Not her own as it used to be according the Ottoman’s law. In HIS. I don't recall Nurbanu being murdered. In fact I'm not sure she was at all. There's no record at all. Kosem is more known as a Valide Sultan or Queen Mother. The Haseki Sultan or Chief Consort title was invented for Hurrem by Suleiman The Magnificent. She died before her son Selim became sultan hence she was the only sultana in the Sultanate of Women not to reach the status of Valide Sultan.

Kosem Sułtan absolutely should be on the first place- she reached the highest level of power and influence in the Sultanate of Women. Turhan Sultan was not very far behind from her mother- in law, being the second place. Safiye Sultan and Nurbanu Sultan are in the third and fourth place, leaving Hurrem Sultan in the fifth place. This list is the most plausible considering historical evidences.

However, Hurrem Sultan was the one who opened the doors to the future Sultana of the Ottoman Empire. Suleyman broke the Ottoman tradition and married her, making her the legal wife and also the Haseki Sultan (no woman could have as much power as her at the time) Although she didnt reach the Valide Sultan title, shes still strong and gave birth to 5 Sehzades (Mehmed, Abdullah, Selim, Bayezid and Cihangir) and 1 Sultana (Mihrimah) despite the fact that the law only allowed one mother = one Sehzade, having her childrens as her supporters. She’s the first concubine to have the title Sultana as the previous concubine would be called Hatun (and later Kadin and Ikbal after the Sultanate of women ended). Shes the one who opened the door for Kosem, Safiye, Nurbanu, Turhan etc and took control over state affairs and have political influence despite the fact that they cannot be the regnant Sultana (as Islam only allowed male to become ruler) they ruled the empire behind curtains, using the Sultan as “puppets” to gain their ambition (she even moved from the Harem and have her own apartment next to Suleyman’s which was scandalous at the time). She even made Suleiman to realise Ibrahim Pasha’s ignorance and treachery, this alone proved that she is indeed powerful. You also have to realise that Hurrem met Suleiman when Valide Sultan was still alive thus making it more challenging for her to gain support and control but she faced it anyway. She also made Suleiman to execute his own son, Mustafa. Thats just show how powerful she is despite not having the title Valide Sultana.

Because the area that he ruled wasnt that big to be call a strong empire. Im saying Hurrem was the strongest Sultana cause shes the one who opened the door to other Chief consorts after her reign as previous concubines wouldnt be called Sultana and wouldn’t bore a child after a son is born (one mother one child rule). Also Hurrem was the only Sultana to have her apartment next to a Sultan’s chamber which was seen as scandalous at the time (harem = haram so women of the Sultan’s harem is forbidden to go outside of that area)

Kosem sultan was the most powerful sultana. She was the regent even. She took care of the political issues by herself which no sultana had ever done. She was the best. Hurrem actually had no power. Just because she was a favorite of sultan Suleiman she could influence on a few decisions. But, kosem sultan did everything by herself and was the strongest of all. In a word she was actually somewhat equal to a sultan at moments. Sultanate of women reached its peak at her time. She can no how be put in 2nd position.

Kosem Sultan’s (1589-1651) power was undisputable. She was a ruler like Catherine the Great in absence of grown princes. (shehzade) She ruled the state for 30 years. Neither Safiye nor Hurrem Sultan exercised any power like her. They were all parts of Sultanate of Women era… Safiye and Hurrem got their power via their husbands and overshadowed by them. On the other hand, Kosem Sultan became a ruler after her husband’s demise… She was one of the most powerful women in the Ottoman Empire. She governed the empire for nearly 30 years. She lived through six reigns of the Ottoman Empire and became regent for two of her sons and grandson. Throughout her role as regent, she gained immense popularity and respect among her subjects. Her power came to a sudden and tragic end when she was assassinated by Turhan Sultan in a struggle for power. From my point of view, she was kind of useful in a time when the empire was already losing power and in process of disintegration and rebellions… She filled the power gap and provided a breathing space and much needed authority for the empire. In Turkish historiography, women are not counted as rulers… Kosem Sultan was an absolute ruler like Catherine the Great for a certain period of time... She would be a Catherine the Great ( Actually she had the same title ‘’Great’’) if she she had appeared on the historical scene during the rise of the state. She appeared on the scene during the decline and scapegoated for it by many historians… I guess it was always difficult to be a woman ruler in the world of men…
@mando1420
@mando1420 Жыл бұрын
Indisputable? Let’s not because Kosem’s corruption was the reason for the Ottoman Empire downfall. She did not have the title of “Great” it was a nickname from the people of Istanbul because they appreciated her giving food to the poor, making foundations, etc. Even if Hurrem Sultan drew her power from Suleiman she still was more powerful. She literally spoke for Suleiman, had the right to use her seal and more. She basically acted like Sultan Suleiman being Hurrem Sultan. Kosem Sultan was never an Ottoman Sultan. Those were all nicknames, what she actually was, was an Official Regent. She did help the Ottoman Empire BUT she was also it’s downfall due to her corruption. She was liked but even her own people saw her corruption and didn’t like it. Causing her murder. While Kosem Sultán only has the royal regent tile and some more, Hurrem Sultan was addressed as Sah & Kraliche. The titles are confirmed to be genuine and not only nicknames as proofed by letters. Hurrem Sultan’s foundation is STILL a thing to this day. Shows her reach… not the point, but Hurrem Sultan is the most powerful Sultana to some. While others see its Kosem. It’s all a battle hold by data. Stay safe ❤

Kosem became haseki sultan during the reign of a weak sultan and was only regent cuz her son was a little child and her other son was mentally incapable. Hurrem became haseki sultan and married the very powerful (if not most powerful) sultan in the Ottoman Empire and during the life of the very powerful and influential hafsa sultan and even managed to influence much of the sultans decisions, even historians say she was one of his most trusted advisors and even managed to get a prince killed. The description can be misleading and sounds foolish because obviously there are female sultans but as of the line of succession is only reserved to men. But yes indeed the sultans wife and mother held a lot of political power which depended on how powerful their son or husband was (status of the empire itself).

Maybe you forget about Emetullah Rabia Gülnüş Sultan, she's the one who have a great power in that time. Maybe not such a really great power like Kosem Sultan, but She already get the title "Valide Sultan" Twice, same like Kosem!! Her Power become so high during her Son Reign (Mustafa and Ahmed) and she the only one who take church from (spoils of war) and change it into the Mosque In her own name. First she is a slave, same like the others sultana, but As time goes by she become the most powerful sultana ever. Keep that in mind, live in Gulnus era isn't easy. She have so many rival from so many side, she wasted after Mehmed IV (her husband) die, but she always stay until the glory days return. Lucky for her, not need a really long time to take a rest in old palace, she's comeback to capital as a Valide Sultan. As memory, Mehmed IV love her so much, he always take Gülnüş in everywhere he go, even in the campaign of war too. So that possible that Gülnüş is Connected to so many Influential pasha and even member of Divan. So Gülnüş have so many Political influence From reign of Mehmed IV And continued until the reign of her two sons. Gülnüş always keep that Connection in years. And that's make Gülnüş one of the part of Sultanate Of Women even some people said that era ended with Turhan Sultan but in history so many people believe that era really ended with Gülnüş. Gülnüş is the last powerful sultana, the last Valide Sultan as Her son's representative regent and the Last Haseki Sultan (even that title is for Rabia Sultan, but Rabia died 3 years early from Gülnüş so Gülnüş is the last women in ottoman who keep that title) because after that the Haseki Sultan title has been removed forever. Although there were still some Valide with exceptional influence after her, no one was able to gain an influence similar to her and her predecessors anymore. So death of Emetullah Rabia Gülnüş that eventually completely ended the period of the Sultanate of Women. And after Gülnüş died, Ottoman Entering the "Tulip Era" which was one of the most peaceful periods in the history of the Ottoman empire. So it's start with Hurrem, end with Gülnüş

For people that keep saying Hurrem was nothing without Suleiman and Kosem didn't need Ahmed. Hurrem and Kosem are not comparable. Kosem didn't need Ahmed because her sons were the only ones in line to the throne, Osman wasn't her son, but she raised him because his mother died when he was a baby. Kosem may not have been Osman's biological mother, but she was the one who raised him. Hurrem needed Suleiman because, unlike Kosem, her sons weren't the only ones in line for the throne. Suleiman had another son, Mustafa. Mustafa was the son of Mahidevran. Mustafa was the oldest living son of Suleiman, which made his claim to the throne greater than any of Hurrem's sons. Kosem was more powerful than Hurrem, which is a fact, but you can't compare them as they had different circumstances. Stop comparing these women, and just acknowledge the fact that they all accomplished great things.

Some historians consider Hurrem Sultan as the most powerful Sultana as she spoke for Suleiman, obviously influencing him she acted as regent, she ruled when Suleiman wasn’t there. Hurrem might draw her power from Suleiman but even if she’s more powerful than Kosem, when people have power.. title means nothing. For example, Osman founded the Ottoman Empire yet he wasn’t the most powerful Sultan. In many circumstances both Kosem & Hurrem are on top… but in this case Hurrem is more powerful. Kosem had a weak Sultan, WAS liked and still got killed. Hurrem was HATED by many people yet she still lived… Kosems corruption was the reason of the Ottoman Empire downfall while Hurrem is the creator of the Female Sultanate, and even ensured she had a successor as she took Nurbanu as a daughter, taught her about politics and more. Hurrem Sultan foundation is STILL going on to this day while Kosem is remembered as “The Magnificent Mother” and a “Corrupt Sultana”

I think you should be pointing out that anyone with the blood or a part of a sultan family is a sultan but theres a big difference between The supreme ruler of the empire Sultan and royal family member sultan. The description can be misleading and sounds foolish because obviously there are female sultans but as of the line of succession is only reserved to men. But yes indeed the sultans wife and mother held a lot of political power which depended on how powerful their son or husband was (status of the empire itself).

Turhan and Nurbanu are most underappreciated women of kadinlar sultanat, while iconizing of the three women you mentioned as the top three needs to be stopped. First and Second place should be devided between Nurbanu and Turhan Hatice, two women, who were treated and regarded as co-rulers of their sons. While Turhan was regent, Nurbanu compensates this by her tenure as one of two original Haseki sultans. Mihrimah was only managing old palace, had great wealth and acted as advisor to sultan,but she was always second to other woman, at first her mother and later Nurbanu. Kösem's power was very unstable, she only had considerable power for around 16 years, other times of her reign she was even less powerful than Valide Ayse Hafsa sultan and her tenure as Haseki sultan was least impressive of four great Hasekis. Hurrem indeed have immense power, but never direct, unlike other women she never had right to make decisions independently. Major reasons you downgraded Turhan and Nurbanu are wrong. 1. Turhan never transferred all her powers to grand Vizier, she just stripped powers of Valide sultan, that Nurbanu bestowed upon the rank. She remained very influnetal and as we can find in her letters she was involved in politics for rest of her life, took part in solving major problems, choosing members of divan and manipulated events from behind the scenes as she did not wanted her son to suffer same fate as others, who had too legally powerful mother. 2. Nurbanu was not killed, she died of sickness after year of being ill. She was regarded as equal of sultan and had right to attened Friday prayers, something no other Valide sultan or any member of imperial family/divan were allowed to. She had right to directly dismiss even grand Vizier and suggestions she refused were not discussed even by padisah. For example, when kapudan kalic ali pasha suggested war against Venice, Nurbanu wrote a letter of threat to him, it is recorded that when he read he was about to meet sultan and dropped the letter in horror, when she entered the divan and padisah asked him what he wanted to discuss, he simply answered that it was no more relevant as Valide sultan had rejected. She even had enough power to write will that empowered kethuda Canfeda hatun over Safiye. Not to mention she was referred as Valide sultan even when she was still Haseki. So my Ranking would be: 1.Nurbanu 2.Turhan 3.Hurrem 4. Kosem 5. Safiye 6. Mihrimah 7. Halime 8. Handan 9. Ematulah Rabia gulnus 10. Ayse Hafsa Members of royal family: 1. Mihrimah 2. Sah huban 3. Ayse humasah/ humasah 4. Ismahan sultan 5. Fatma sultan Non sultan women: 1. Kethuda Canfeda hatun 2. Kahya Gülfem hatun 3. Mahidevran Hatun 4. Meleki kalfa 5. Cevri usta P.S. not related to ranking but Turhan was raised and presented by Burnaz Atike sultan,not Kosem.

Nurbanu was the first woman to have both Haseki and Valide titles. The title of Valide Sultan was considered legal because of her. She got married to Sultan Selim, she was his advisor as well as co-regent to her son Murad. She communicated through letters with Catherine de Medici and was also close to Venetians. She was far more powerful than Safiye, considering also the fact that she lost power with her death, wheareas Safiye was thrown out of the palace twice. She remained for about 18 years with no power at all. Read history and learn facts before ypu decide to speak so surely and freely on the matter.

Safyire Valide Sultana and finally Hurrem Sultana. Not likely the others Sultanas, Hurrem Sultana power came solely from Sultan Suleyman and not because she was herself powerful. Without Sultan Suleyman, she would have lost everything, even her own life. Powerful my ass 😂😂😂😂😂😂
