Thanks for sharing page per page with us. I think this book is great for children who are at grade level and are learning how to read. For more advanced kids who already know how to read I think the Good and the Beautiful is more challenging and will keep them on their toes. I was considering changing books for my son for next school year but I think I realized it’s better to stick to the same curriculum unless you are not happy with the curriculum you’re using. Thanks again for your review it was very informative.

Oh I remember those markers 😆Such a great overview of the K5 books! Dane was watching this with me and he is still comprehending that others homeschool so seeing that another little boy does the same lessons at home too was amazing to him, haha!

The phonics book looks very advanced even at the beginning. Is K4 actually a needed prerequisite for a child who doesn't know much reading yet? Also, do they use sight words? Thank you

This year I went on my own for my kiddos curriculum and it went well. I have a 13 Boy grade 8 11 boy special needs level grade 1, 7 girl grade 1 and 1 boy - my baby can read program. Next year I want to purchase a curriculum and I am looking at Abeka and timberdoodle. Huge price difference but would love a set plan already for me so it’s less stressful. I’m a huge planner and schedule junkie. I love a set program day. Thank you for sharing. Love another mama’s perspective of the curriculum. 😉👍🏼💜

Thank you for watching and for your support Kim! 💗 Mama...you are amaZing!!! I wish I was more of a schedule junkie...but I'm totally not. So, I've adapted! Lol! Turns out...more flexibility in our home works best for the boys as well. Each and every home is different and that is the true beauty in it all! 💗😊 I look forward to seeing what you decide for next year! Best of luck mama! 🤗

I’m all for the flexibility too. It comes and goes. Everyday is different. Especially the moods of the kids and me. Lol. We school Monday to Thursday so we have Fridays open just in case we need a day off during the week for appts. Or sickness or just for a day off. 😉👍🏼

Really enjoy watching your videos! Is the lesson plans or the teachers key necessary for this level? Thank you
@SimplyLivingIt4 жыл бұрын
Hey Christie, my opinion is no! Buuut... I'm kind of a rebel and don't typically follow a teacher's guide or lesson plan.🙊😂 But, truly...for this level, no! (In my opinion!😉)Not unless you need extra reinforcements or want a guide. Not sure if that helps or not! Lol! My youngest is using A Beka math. He is in first grade and we still don't use a teacher's guide. Now... when we get to upper middle school/high school... my thoughts will most likely change! 😉😂

I didnt purchase the teachers guide and the oral numbers evaluations are throwing me off. My son is learning 1 through 10 and how to write and the oral numbers evaluation jumps to 27. It doesnt seem to flow well otherwise am liking it.

My daughter turns 5 in August. Debating between using AAR or Abeka. With AAR should I go right into level one or do the pre-reading. She doesn’t know all of her letter sounds yet... So many tough choices! I’m nervous to teach her how to read.

Thanks for sharing! How do you blend AAR and Abeka and how they teach reading? Do the different approaches get confusing? We've been using AAR pre-reading and finishing it up here soon and moving into Level 1 for Kinder and I've been looking into Abeka for Math too.
@SimplyLivingIt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! I haven't noticed a struggle with my boys at all with using both programs. I don't follow the teacher's book (lesson plan outline) with A Beka, therefore some of the concepts that would be taught through phonics/reading, are not getting repeated. I look at it as more of a win, win...if they don't understand the concept/approach from A Beka, they will get it with AAR and vice versa. Now again, we don't use the letter tiles for AAR either. We ditched those early on. We walk through the lesson in the student activity book (AAR) and then on to reading he goes! I really, truely have not noticed any confusion AT ALL. I was worried/prepared with my oldest to address any differences, but I really feel it has actually helped them more than confused them. We do use the phonics flashcards (A Beka) for some light review from time to time. Some would say it isn't necessary and I am adding more to our plate- it works for us and my boys LOVE it! If they are enjoying the readers and are understanding the concepts...why change a thing?! With my youngest moving in to 1st this coming year, I plan to finish AAR level 2 (which he is currently doing) and then add in the A Beka readers as fillers. Sorry for such a long reply...but I felt this wasn't an easy answer and wanted to explain what it looks like for us! That's the beauty in it all...do what works for you and what your kids enjoy! So far...that mindset hasn't let me down!😉💗😊 Just to note- I do feel that A Beka in and of itself is enough...more than enough!!!! As is AAR! I am a spaz and had to try AAR with my oldest because I had heard so many great things. I haven't put it down since, other than the letter tiles😜. Hope this helps!

Simply Living It Good to know! We're very eclectic when it comes to approaches but not with reading so this would work then. I would never drop AAR because it works SOooo well and I love to teach it! But we will need a language arts component that incorporates writing and grammar too -Abeka Seems solid and something I'd love to use as a spine, especially for language arts moving into the higher grades. Thanks for your perspective! Another question if you don't mind--Did you find the lesson plans necessary to teach Math concepts "the abeka way" ?
@SimplyLivingIt5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely NOT necessary!!! I purchased it my first go round...never used it! Not necessary at all! 💗 Hope this helps! 😊💗

@JGFamilyLife5 жыл бұрын
Hi I need a quick suggestion from you if you don't mind. I am debating about getting the K5 Academy with the DVDs or just using the actual basic curriculum because I'm nervous about teaching the special sounds and pronouncing them correctly and being able to teach him the tips and tricks to read the Sounds correctly. Did you struggle teaching him the sounds to help him read or did you find it quite easy to do? By the way, my son just turned 4 this past February but hes a lil advanced for his age he can actually sound out cvc words easily, count to 50, tell time, etc so my struggle with whether to get k4 or k5 was def answered with this video so thanks so much for that!
@SimplyLivingIt5 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thank you for watching! I am so glad that it was such a helpful video for you in finding the correct placement! To answer your question, I have never used A Beka Academy. For us, it was a cost issue. You CAN and do have the ability, mama, to teach your sweet boy to read!!! Just take it one day at a time. Make sure he is understanding the particular sound/rule before moving on to the next. You will do great mama. And so will he! For me...teaching them to read seemed really daunting at first...but I promise you - it just clicks! You could always order the books and use other resources if need be, (youtube videos are very helpful for little ones)! That would save you so much money! Good luck with your upcoming school year! I wish you all the best! And remember...don't doubt yourself, mama! 💗

So how does a day look like with the curriculum? Like how many hours a day, do you do a little of each work book a day? What about testing and stuff? I homeschooled after 5th grade but my mom handled all that stuff and I had little test booklets I had to do and she turned in to the local lady we did it through for grading or whatever. I’m just confused and so overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do for my 5 year old before school starts and I am just lost.

Hi Taylor! I would love to do a flip through for you! Here in Idaho, the laws are very different. I don't have to turn anything in to anyone! I do it all myself. Every state is different so be sure and check the laws in your state. Take a deep breath mama! You can do this!! 5 years old...oh man! Those are the fun years! 😃 The more creative the better! 😉💜😊 The time we spend on school/day depends on which grade level. My 1st grader usually works for an hour where with 5th grader, it can take up to three hours...depending on the day! 😉 Hope this helps!💜

If you do A Beka Academy, then you do need to submit your child's progress. I have never done A Beka Academy so I am not much help with that department! 😊

Simply Living It I’m so confused now! Lol what’s the difference with the academy where you turn in work vs doing it yourself? Is it accredited? I am debating on this program vs the MFW and just don’t know what to go with. Thank you for the response, I really appreciate your info and the help!
@SimplyLivingIt5 жыл бұрын
Yes, A Beka Academy is accredited I believe! Check out their website for more info! I actually switched my older boys to Master Books for this coming school year and I am so excited!!! Check out A Beka's website and hopefully you can get some answers there. It all depends on what you are needing/wanting in your homeschool and what your state requires. You can find out more regarding state laws on the HSLDA website. I promise...just breathe! You got this!!!😃💜

@@kayeanne9134 Just wanted to chime in! My daughter has been using Abeka as an enrichment source, and she does really like it! We purchased the Kindergarten Math, Writing, and Reading. She's technically in public school kindergarten, and they've already started counting by 5s and 10s up to 100 in public school, so I think in many ways Abeka is where it should be, but definitely more comprehensive and enjoyable, and the pages don't seem overwhelming to her, they are colorful and fun, and her penmanship is getting so pretty with all the practice she's getting from their writing workbook! I'm thinking of pulling her out of school soon to teach her full time, Abeka feels like the right way to go especially to start. ☺️

I had to giggle at all of the little cut-outs 😂 Whatever keeps them going, lol! I started my oldest 3 with Abeka and have those same flashcards in a giant binder as well and still pull them out when I have a new reader even though we use other curriculum these days. 😊
