I had this guide as a kid! My family was too poor to have an N64, so I bought this guide (I think for $10) and read it every night. It was a really high quality print. Using the pictures to imagine playing the game was the closest I could get, but it was still quite fun for me :)

I actually knew about the snowman hat because our copy of Super Mario 64 was a used copy with preexisting saves and one of them had a 70 star file that was missing his hat. Given how cryptic the entry to Snowman's Land is, it took me so long to finally find and retrieve the lost hat of that particular Mario.

The first time I went to Snowman's Land, I got yeeted, didn't realize Mario's hat was missing and got the bully star instead. When I went back in to get the hat, the snowman had it and I had no idea how to kill them so I just gave up on it.

Apparently, you can actually beat the piano using glitches. I'm not sure how it works but one of them involves using menu storage when the menu asking if you want to leave the level after getting a star comes up. So, technically, it wasn't lying. You just had to break the game.

The bob-omb picture with the weird texture looks like it is in bob-omb battlefield, it's the stone bridge right at the base of the mountain. You cross it to get to a wall of bars with a gap that leads to the area with three balls rolling back and forth. Underneath, there is a switch that opens a gate at one side of the underpass, along with a 1-up and a red coin.

There was one time when I was a kid that I lost Mario's hat in SL. I think the it blew somewhere inaccessible, so I couldn't pick it back up off the ground. I remember trying to reset the game, but it was still gone. Eventually, I found it on one of the snowmen. Cool little thing they included.

2 things: I just now got the "Peach's slide" innuendo and as a kid I always liked maps like rainbow cruise, TTC, and TTM, but when I was finally old enough to play through the game on my own HMC is what blew me away. Every other level feels like a glorified obstacle course after playing hazy maze cave. There's just something really engrossing about it in a casual playthrough.

The photos were typically taken with a film camera, underneath a blackout screen, with a CRT television. That should help explain the screenshots. Nintendo typically provided minimal assets for these guides before the GameCube/GBA era and companies like Nintendo Power had to work with what they could make.

I can't believe there's an official Nintendo Power Player's Guide for Super Mario 64 that says you can defeat Bullet Bills and the Mad Piano, and everyone tried it and said "guess they lied?" However, when more sources than I can list confirmed Luigi was not in the game, they collectively all went mad. Some remain in denial to this day... although, they are in luck because the DS remake and mods are a thing now.
