Even the most modern train would become a nightmare if shared with five other people. No thank you! Lovely views out the window though. Thanks for sharing it!

If I’m travelling alone with just my luggage I don’t mind the 6 bed couchettes. I mean, sleep will be what it will be but that’s mainly due to my length (195cm). I try to book the top bunk and use clothes to have my head on the luggage rack above the hallway. Sometime you meet fun people to chat with and share a beer, other times I just watch a movie on the iPad in my bunk. As it’s the top one I don’t inconvenience anyone. Been doing it since I was a kid on army service. Now, if it’s for business or with family I always take the sleeper. I will say, this train looks great for what it is. If I ever want to go to Budapest this is a great way.

I couldnt handle sleeping in a crib with five other people. Then again, im older and tolerate less and have funds.. I would get a single compartment. But i get it due to funds you had to get a 6 person berth. Thanks for the great video and havd a Happy New Year Thibault

Back in The Day™ (2002), my family booked 5 of the 6 berths in a car like this. We _should_ have booked the 6th spot, rather than have some random French lady get stuck with us.

Good lord, I had enough of those 6 bed couchettes. Whoever was designing the interiors probably never rode a night train in a chouchette!

I travelled in a night train with 5 more people in a compartment once and it was completely fine. Maybe corail couchettes are more spacious? Idk

I did Stockholm - Berlin in one the other month with five strangers and it was fine. You need to be polite and somewhat prepared but it always works out. Some fun conversations along the way. Disclaimer: When I was in the army I did this every other weekend to get home on leave so I was quite used to it and just never stopped. Lovely way to see the world.

For using it thrice in a year from budapest, I tend to think that the lack of locomotive you experienced is usual or scheduled, usually resulting in an engine from RailCargo Hungary being brought in until Vienna I believe. The delay was also a frequent problem with the Kalman Imre, yet I find it really useful and convenient when done well ! A very nice way to travel half of Europe in my opinion.

6:35. I had the same experience one year ago when I travelled from Budapest to München with the Kálmán Imre. They made the connection with the Taurus much later than expected and we had an hour's delay, in addition to the fact that the locomotive's pantograph broke before entering Győr station.

I tried a couchette in a six berth compartment and I won't do it again. I like hard beds, but this one was too hard.
@philippenaluna23123 күн бұрын
That was an interesting trip, Thibault. I'd imagine that this was unusual in that the train locomotive wasn't attached to shunt the train into the platform. But that would, as you imply, impact on the timekeeping. In this instance, any recovery time must have been eliminated and additional delays accumulated consequently.

I did this from Zurich both ways on sleeper. Little did I know that the tickets were on separate male/female compartments so my wife and daughter was assigned the one next door with two random girls and I was sharing one with two random dudes, pretty awkward experience. On the way back it was not so busy and we managed to swap beds with some friendly Swiss ladies. On the way back we were heavily delayed too, so much so that I had planned to go to work directly upon arrival and had to take the day off which sucks. Overall wouldn’t do this trip again unless I find a way to book the entire compartment which ÖBB didn’t offer.

I did this trip once and thought hmm maybe I can do it in the seats and save some money... For 25 euros, let me tell you, it was NOT worth it. Get a couchette. Great train though

It was lucky in that SBB didn't refuse your train entry into Switzerland. SBB often refuses entry for delayed DB trains at the border.

This Train is good, albeit there really should be a restaurant car with the train. I had these small breakfasts on the Nightjet, and on MAV as well from Budapest to Berlin, but it was not sufficient. A restaurant car is a must on night trains in my opinion. Especially on journeys when you arrive at the destination around 9 am. Even if I was to get off at an earlier stop (Sargans or Buchs on this train, Ulm or Augsburg on Kálmán Imre EuroNight, or even Dresden with Metropol EuroNight), I would honestly take a proper freshly made breakfast and some really good coffee over an extra 30ish minutes of sleep.

Great trip, it's a bit surprising me that the delay of departure is due to no locomotive for the train, definitely rare moments. Couchette definitely great for group or solo traveler with few bag/carriage.

Superb video, yet again! I’ve seen ridiculous departing delays on night trains both in Vienna and in Budapest and I can’t understand why train companies don’t want to solve the logistics issue. I know for a fact that in BUD the delay is often caused because of “train rotation”, the engine is late because it arrives late already from another service. Why rely on engines that already have a full day’s worth of delay on them? Train companies and governments keep pushing the night services as great green solutions yet don’t do much to actually convince customers that they’re reliable. A lot of talk from train companies and politicians but not much action - as usual.

Funny enough I took the Vienna - Zürich Nightjet once and we also got a delay of +3h bc of the hungarian train 😂. But I was happy bc I got half the money back and being stopped for 4h in Salzburg waiting for the connecting train I could sleep like a baby 😴. The train was fully booked btw, this line is a huge success.

WHile the train is at Keletti without locomotive, do they plug the train into the mains or do the cars run on batteries? Next time you see such arrangement, would be curious on where the cables form station connect to the cars. does the cable emerge from between rails, or is the cable on a pedestal on the platform and then plug into the car ?

Best wishes for the New Year, Obuda, Buda and Pest of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, for a fabulous journey that will take you to the heart of the Swiss economy, Zurich, via the city of Vienna, prodigious cradle of the House of Habsburg, and the magnificent mountain ranges of Tyrol and Vorarlberg bordering Lake Constance. Zurich is the country's most important railway station in terms of passenger traffic. With almost 3,000 trains a day, it is also one of the busiest stations in the world. It is also Europe's busiest terminus station. More than 430,000 passengers pass through every day.

Hi! How do you handle to be with 5 more others when you go to the restroom or everywhere else or just sleep? I mean do you bring your values (not purse, but anything else) with you always or just trust them? I cannot imagine to travel with neither 5 nor 1 foreing to me especially from Budapest. I grew up in the capital here, that's why i am on this understandable side. Be safe on your further joruneys, happy new year and all the best!

Couchettes are a concept that never has appealed to British travellers unless they were students abroad ,as sharing a compartment with strangers is fraught with questions of security. Even more so in today’s environment. As far as I know such coaches have never been employed in the U.K..
