What determines something as expensive, or cheap is subjective though. I can’t be the one to say that a certain something is expensive because that line will be different for everybody, that’s one reason I rarely mention exact prices, but, if you can afford a piece of equipment and it’s fancier than the others available does that necessarily means it’s better? In a few cases no. In a few cases, it can actually be detrimental to go for the most expensive option. Price should never be your only reference for choosing scuba gear. It can be a good guide to the quality and craftsmanship of the item but not if it’s the right one for you. Look at the features and what you need, more than simply what you can afford because it might be worth saving up a little bit longer to get the right thing, or selecting a cheaper alternative because it suits you better. But let's see what you get the more you pay for things…

I'll spend a few hours looking through all the different brands and models until I check my bank balance and realise I have to go for the cheapest option. But I'm still alive after a few dives so works for me.

I know this isn’t popular, but I’ve gotten some great deals on close outs and being sold rental equipment. I saw 70% on a new Aqualung BCD 5-years ago on a closing sale and it’s still performing great and the model is still being sold. I have some previously rental equipment that is holding up well as well and saved a lot of money. Just a thought

Bought an Aqualung Axiom i3 BCD retails was 700 got it for $325 on a mega close out, store wasn't closing and it was their training gear, works fine, had it for years over a 100 dives in. Aqualung Legend Reg $325 rebuilt from an instructor. Used gear isn't bad, my Cobra 3 computer and legend Octo were new, but my tanks are all used but a Faber 133 HP steel given to me for the holidays

I have bought my gear after few dives, not the cheapest, but surely customized for traveling, good stuff and honest price. As the time goes and my expertise and experience goes higher, I have invested in gear with additional features. If I have to advise somebody, I'll do that. Buy something that works for you, something relatively cheap. As your dive evolves, go for specific features that you might judge to be the necessary ones.

Got a $80 cheep suit from Amazon. I sail and kayak, don’t plan to be in the water unless something bad happens. It’s suppose to keep me alive long enough to get back on the boat. I got under the cold shower for 5 minutes and didn’t got cold. Thumbs up or down ?

I look at capability to work well with the diving I do most, service cost, warranty and customer support. I find that generally mid level for me is the best for my dive environment.

I bought a scuba pro synergy twin and it always fogs up even after treating it and after taking it after a number of dives. 3 months later, the glass separated from its frame, fortunately it happened while we were making our initial descent. Bought a cheaper saeko dive mask and it has been flawless for the past few dives (hope I didn’t jinx it hehehe). So yeah, price does not nit necessarily mean its better or the best.

The Way I see it is, your life depends on that gear. So going to cheap probably isn't the smartest idea.

the online store diveinn had gear at half to a 3rd of the price of retail in Australia. It was fantastic and really exposed what a shit show the distribution network is here. Unfortunately the brands cracked the shits about it and blocked them selling to Australian customers.

I've bought the best I can afford, and no, I'm not rolling in money but, my life is important to me and I like to be able to live to dive another day. So, with that being said I've invested my money in ScubaPro reg, fins and bc. What I have is not the top of the line equipment but, It's not the cheapest stuff they make either.

Price isn’t a factor for me. I look at the features I want. And just weigh up the options. A lot of things (especially BCD’s) have stuff you don’t need. When I’ve found a few I like I then look at the price. If one is significantly more expensive for the same features then I’ll write it off. But otherwise, it comes down to looks.

Finished my OW course ab 2 months ago and haven't dove since. My buddy didn't finish the course bc he forgot his medi waiver but he will prob be finishing in a few months. I think I'm going to visit the shop tomorrow though bc I WANNA DIVE. Plus, I need to buy a dive computer as I refuse to dive without one. Im thinking the peregrine; then use as a backup if i go the tech route. After that, I'll prob buy a knife+light, then a reg, bcd, wetsuit in that order. BTW if anyone is in Central Fl and wants to dive with someone new (but very comfortable in the water) HMU.

I don’t really need to watch the video don’t know the answer to this question. It boils down to is what do you plan to do on your dives? If you are happy being an open water diver and going down to no more than 60 feet then cheap gear will do you just fine but if you plan on diving in overhead environment at deeper deaths then you need high-end pricey gear. And if you can’t afford it then diving is not for you you

My pet peeve is the price of some bcd’s out there cough... atomic bc2... cough. When 80% of divers would be better suited by a backplate a piece of webbing and a basic wing.
