Most scuba diving hand signals are based on actual sign language like ASL and while we do have some universal hand signals across the globe, you can also come across some regional ones, especially when it comes to fish ID. But even the fundamentals can change sometimes so it’s important to spend a little time with your buddy so you’re both on the same wavelength when it comes to talking underwater because you can have different languages when it comes to hand signals.
Now, we’re not particularly elitist here at Simply Scuba but on that note, here are The BEST Dive Signals To Use!

@@michaell.6877 Same for bar, at least if you're diving with 200 bar tanks. So both "half tank" and "100 bar".

When I was diving in the Galapagos, the DM had a 5 minute briefing of every single species we were likely to encounter along with its corresponding signal. This included an individual signal for each species of shark and even a different one for mobula versus manta rays. Needless to say it was all pretty much lost the moment it came time to back roll in but props to her for trying.

Hello, When I worked on a commercial fishing vessel up in Alaska, there were two kinds of "ok" one was when things were all pretty good, and that was the common open circle made with the thumb and first finger, and the other three extended. When you were desperately stressed by the situation but functioning in your job...the circle made by the thumb and first finger, was tightly closed. Puckered up so to speak. This signal let the skipper up in the pilot house know you were able but not happy. : )

My other half is starting diving this year. We are really close and super chilled about life (though weirdly everyone thinks we're sisters..... creepy a.f.!) but I can still totally see us doing this a few years from now.

With the one-handed numbers the 1-5 should be done with the palm facing forward, while 6-9 have the palm facing toward you. This makes it possible to correctly interpret the signal no matter which orientation you or your buddy are in or if your hand is at a 45 degree angle.

I thought I was going barmy when he did numbers with the back if his hand facing. Like geez...its been a year since I learned them, how could I have forgotten already! I'm glad someone else spotted that. 😎

Our group points out Titan Trigger Fish by pointing at it and then raising a middle finger towards it. It’s a very effective warning.

One of my first dives in the pacific northwest we have a hand signal for a fish called a wolf eel. Turns out it was the same hand signal used in Australia for a great white. That was a entertaining post dive as I learned the importance of discussing hand signals before starting the dive.

For hand signals in BAR, my instructor just taught us that each finger is 10BAR, so for 150 BAR you just put up 10 fingers, drop your hands for a second and then put up 5

My favourite is when whoever your diving with is saying they have hurt there fingers and waft them across there chest in a flat motion from shoulder to shoulder. Then as you are trying to push them back to get them to tell you what happend, they drop there weights and bolt to the surface. How dangerous over a boo boo on there fingers. 🤣🤣 Being serious if you ever see someone signal out of air take it very seriously it's easy to joke here but irl it's no joke.

When I was in Belize, our dive guide used a different sign for grouper. It was the rubbing of his belly, and it took me until that evening to figure out why. We had grouper for dinner. He was signalling that it was a tasty fish.

It's logical that differenent agencies - which tend to be regional in their origins - have signals relevent to their own conditions, but at least the basics should be standardised, i.e. the BSAC and PADI out of air signals being different is at best absurd, and at worst downright dangerous. Also a bit strange that BSAC has no sign (that I'm aware of?!) for "sea looks like pea soup"
@lieannearnold9688
@lieannearnold9688 4 жыл бұрын
One thing that's good about BSAC is they (at least the group I've dived with) are very diligent about communication before the dive. I found out on my first dive with them that my out of air signal would have meant "you're pissing me off" to my buddy. 😅

I discovered a few weeks ago that you need to differentiate between "Go up" because of hitting NDL and "surface, thumbing the dive". I was on Nitrox at 89 ft with a buddy who did not have nitrox. He hadn't told me he was on air, so when he gave me the "thumbs up" signal, I thought he had an issue and was aborting the dive. He was trying to show me is watch computer with the blinking NDL but I didn't see it. He stopped our accent at about 60ft, and it I didn't realize until we were in the boat what he was trying to say to me. I will be making this distinction in future

Hmmm....everyone I know uses fingers on upper arm for thousands and then fingers up for hundreds . So having 2100 psi left is 2 fingers on upper arm and then 1 finger in front of you. Never seen that method in the video before.

I was diving in Hawaii and the DM had his own signals, he wanted all of us to learn them in a 5 minute briefing, and yeah, I had no idea what he was trying to say. Stick to the most recognized signals please, I'm begging the DM's of the world, don't make up your own system, even if it might make sense to you. lol
