In this video, "Simpson Strong Tie Set XP | Product Review!" I will give you a breakdown of the pros and cons I experience using this product.
I recently decided to build a deck off of the back of my cabin and during the process I needed to anchor some some bolts to a hollow block wall using Simpson Set XP.
While the product worked as it said it should, it still had some things I wasn't to happy with.
Detroit D.I.Y Apparel has arrived please take a minute to check it out using the link below.

This is a P.O.S. product from Simpson. So disappointing. Thought I wad the only one with these issues. But alas, no, it's just a poorly designed product. Thanks for the vid! You speak the truth!

I use the AT-XP for this application and it works great.

I bought set-XP. After listening to this vid, I almost returned it. But then remembered he proudly said he doesn't read directions. So I decided to give it a try and it worked perfectly. The product was thoroughly mixed BEFORE it exited the tube. I also used my regular DIY quality clacking dispenser.

I didn't have this problem with every tube, however i did have this problem with more tubes than what i didn't. The tube i highlighted in this video was the worst of them all. Only 2 of the tubes I purchased mixed after a small amount was dispensed. After i dispensed more than half a tube and no color change i read the instructions. Either you got lucky with the tube you had or simpson has corrected there problem.

Really, really well done review. Very helpful explanation on how the product functions, too. You did this three years ago and I’m using it today in May ‘23 so I hope Simpson worked out some of the kinks. I can say from the outset, however, having clear instructions for hollow base application all in one place is already lacking. Keep up the good work. And, yes, subscribed.

You have to cut all the way through the nose of the cartridge. There should be black and white materials coming back. You only cut the white part open and not the black. It also helps if you dispense a little, to make sure both are coming out, before attaching the nozzle.

I cut through both. Seized up fast. Bad design.

I had the exact same problem with the Simpson product so I bought Sika at Home Depot. No waste with Sika and it held as well as Simpson. I like the idea of the screens to squeeze the adhesive into but couldn't find the screens at HD. Where did you buy the screens?

I ordered them online, along with the stainless threaded rod. I also bought the sika at Home depot when i ran short and had great luck with that product. Thanks for watching.

I came here looking for what i was doing wrong. Turns out nothing. My experience is that it mixed right away but, no kidding, a third of the way the tube just seized up. No worky. I even broke a caulking gun because I was squeezing too hard to get the stuff out (gorilla grip!). Second tube seized up too but the color went from teal back to white! Huhhhh? Way too expensive! I'm gonna just go with liquid nails "Fuze it."

I did pick up a tube of epoxy from home depot. It had two bags in it instead of two tubes. About the same price with much better results.

It was the sika brand.

@@detroitdiy Hmmm. . .maybe I'll check that out. I've had excellent results with Fuze It. It glues anything to anything in all kinds of temps and weather at less than a third of the cost. But is it "just" an adhesive, not exactly epoxy. I'll look for the Sika tube. BTW I'm drilling holes for 8 ft high fence posts. I have exposed rock all the way around so some of the holes didn't get to 4 ft deep before hitting big flat rock--one as shallow as about 1 ft. The solution I came up with is hammer drill holes in the rock--one in the middle and four in compass point corners. The four corners get rebar and the center gets a Simpson strong tie bracket with a 7 in. bolt. I need epoxy/adhesive to stick the rebars and bolts in. Then it's post followed by concrete.

Sounds like a solid plan.

Same exact thing happened to me. Simpsons should be embarrassed. I got the epoxy all over myself. Total disappointment.

I have worked with epoxys, resins and fillers over 40 years. The Simpson epoxy seems to be almost the exact formulation as JB Weld. The black part is iron oxide, chemically that is all that would result in the color. It has the same mix ratio, same fluidity and the gray when dried is identical so it is a virtual copy. There is no magic high-strength epoxy base so it is ridiculous to deal with wasted material that doesn't mix at once and leaves enough unusable in the applicator for another anchor.
