@Valerie-nm1gr
@Valerie-nm1gr Жыл бұрын
It's not so much that Uter is an "old fashioned" stereotype, it's more about the different regions of Germany. The stereotype of Germans as focused, humourless, hyper-efficient, future-forward technocrats is basically the stereotype of the NORTHERN Germans, who live nearer to the famously austere Scandinavian sphere of influence, as well as France, easily the most "snobby" of European nations. Northern Germany is the homeland of Kraftwerk, and all of those car companies. Uter, on the other hand, is from Southern Germany. The southern part of the country is more rural or agrarian, and hence more "laid-back" and more about traditional culture and folk practices. The Alpenhorn is a distinctive feature of traditional Southern German music--it's right there in the name, they come from the Alps, which are the main geographic feature there. Southern Germany is close to Italy and there's some similarity to an Italian stereotype, the people are considered rustic, they're easy to get along with and contented with the mundane pleasures of life such as food, as opposed to chasing productivity, progress, or material success. Having an American kid who wears cowboy boots and a bolo tie isn't wrong, as long as they're portrayed as being from the Western part of the country, where people still enjoy wearing such things. It's a parallel stereotype that we might contrast with the Californian surfer or the spoiled "Boston Brahmin" from New England. Same idea with Uter.

Gina, the juvenile delinquent from the episode "The Wandering Juvie," reminds me a lot of a young female version of Moe. Both of them are quite harsh and vicious, display antisocial behavior, and have a criminal record. However, they are the way they are because they have no family, and they both definitely have a good side. I have a headcanon that after Gina gets out of juvie, she'll get adopted by Moe and both of their lives will become a lot better.

So I keep recommending Groundskeeper Willie and Moe, and here's why. It's basically for the same reason but let's start with Moe since it's clearer with him. I want to know if his character was clearly defined and then changed, or if he was always all over the place. There's a period of the show where he has a gruff exterior but is clearly a sweet person inside. Like when he reads Little Women at the hospital. But then there are other episodes where he worships the nightmares your dogs have. Is this one showrunner taking the character in a new direction, or was Moe always just an easy character to use in virtually any scene? Groundskeeper Willie for the same reason. He's been around since season 2 and I love him so much I named my Stardew Valley character after him. He's gruff, no respect for authority, but consistently helpful and a good person at heart. Or is he? In some episodes, he's suggested to be the Aberdeen Strangler. What's up with that? Did he just become so popular, even taking away from characters like Otto as RealJims has said, that he had multiple personalities grafted on, or was he always just a grab bag of adult-in-school personalities?

Üter definitely reminds me of Augustus Gloop. Both are German gluttons. They've done references to Willy Wonka before but just now because of this video I'm surprised we didn't get a Treehouse of Horror segment based on Willy Wonka. Üter as Augustus obviously, Bart as Charlie Bucket, Abe as Grandpa Joe, Sherri or Terri as Veruca Salt, Janey as Violet Beauregarde, Nelson as Mike Teavee (that role is tough to decide on who to give it to) and Mr Burns as Willy Wonka (mainly I gave it to him for being rich and it could be a reference to "Burn's Heir" which is one of my favorite season 5 episodes and top 15 episode for me). It'd be great if done right. As for Üter himself I don't really have a big opinion on him since he's really only prominent in season 6 (literally "Treehouse of Horror V" and "The PTA Disbands" are some of my favorite episodes).

I never really thought about it but now that you mention it, Homer and Uter have a lot in common, they could have many adventures together. Think about Homer and Uter going on a quest to find the long forgotten perfect piece of chocolate, created by german scientist Ferdinand Leuthäuser-Schacht in 1977. Or them trying to lower the legal drinking age to 6, and when they succeed, Homer offers Uter a Duff, but Uter just scoffs it off becaus "Life is too short to drink American beer". Or them trying to ban PE in schools. I think there are countless possibilities.

A very interesting one. I've also loved how they use Uter where they have his sweet natured demeanor clash with chaos around him, even though I am someone who's very much against violence on children and child abuse. So yeah, I admit that sometimes certain things on the show that involve that do make me uneasy. I was unaware of how they did some of that with Uter in later episodes, and making a character like him act like a jerk is really off putting, so I agree there. After your next one, I submit my usual suggestions suggestions which are Lindsey Naegle, Agnus Skinner, Duffman, and two new ones are Santa's Little Helper and Snowball 2. I still hope for either of my first two suggestions, since I really want to hear you talk about one of Tress MacNeille's characters. Great work as always Jim.

I find it odd that they gave the visual reference to barefoot football kickers to Uter of all people. Because if cartoons have taught me anything, it’s that whenever you have characters playing a form of football, you need to have a character get confused and think they’re playing the other type of football. Yet the Simpsons didn’t make that joke despite having a European on the team. Is that actually part of the joke? That the German kid who would realistically be a soccer kid of the Bundesliga is actually big fan of American football and knows enough to be a sweat about it!

am I the only one who thinks the whole "stick to the liberal arts honey" moment was supposed to be played by Martin??? ya know, because he got that tradicional misogynistic condescending posture to him... we've seen in other moments. Also the low key sort of unofficial, unspoken competition with Lisa... and out smarting her with a better alternativa car. Don't I have seen a scene like this before? But I can't quite remember. Anyway... I think having Uter saying saying that to her was so incredibly out of character. He is super nice! plus he is always there in the school band scenes so he doesn't comes off as someone who would disdain art like that. Anyway... Martin would so be a better call for that moment.
@TheRealJims
@TheRealJims Жыл бұрын
His inclusion in that scene is kinda weird because, after the race, Martin insults her first with a comment about messing up something "like a girl," then Uter chimes in with his liberal arts comment, and then Database follows up with a college joke. Uter was established at the beginning of the episode by being in the contest with a scene with Superintendent Chalmers. It's just unusual they picked Uter in that spot among the rest of the nerds.
