www.insidesimra... presents our full review of the DIY Richmotech sim racing rig that Shaun and Jessica built.
For this show Shaun purchased $112 worth of materials and is using the same seat we used for the Deathmobile (DIY Wood Rig) and the PVC Rig.
In this show, Darin and Shaun go over the pros and the cons of the rig and talk about what it took to make.
See the full build here www.insidesimra...
Thanks to Frank Rico for his plans that are located at www.ricmotech.com :

Sim-Seat SR-X is a solid rig.. I converted my SR-2 (centerpost design) into an SR-X by buying the upgrade kit.. it's a great rig with lots of adjustment range. Got the tilt wheel deck and Fanatec Pro shift upgrade too. I got mine all in silver with blue seat with black suede panels and it looks great. I think the all black is a little plain looking. When you watch the review-- the seat is damaged. My seat is perfect, no wrinkles in material.

Really nice seeing the care Shaun put in to that build. My grandfather was car paint sprayer and I learned the benefit of filling, sanding, sanding some more, painting, sanding again. The end result is totally worth it.

A pair of wheels on the front end so when you lift the back you can move it easier if needed could be an addition for any 3 of these Rigs. Just lift up the back end as you would with many exercise machines. Love them all. Thanx guys and lady.

Built this about 3yrs ago and love it, very sturdy. They mentioned it not being for the taller guy and I’m 6’ 2” . I mounted my pedals to the rig (csl elites). I have to slide my seat forward about 6 or 8 inches.

Patience, patience, patience. When I built the deck I actually glued and screwed the plywood to the bottom. I discovered my mistake days later when I made the sideboards and tried to fit them to the base. I couldn't believe I did that! You have to be able to laugh at your mistakes or you will get too frustrated to finish. I wrapped my rig with black and red carbon fiber vinyl and installed t-molding onto all of the edges. Thanks for the vid guys!

Very interesting. I have purchased the plans and now have ordered the triple monitor plans. I am not a car sim junkie, I however, play space flight sims like, Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. With your DIP, I see that I will be able to modify this to my size and the accessories that I will be installing like my Warthog HOTAS.. Great set of videos. Thanks Steve

I'm building mine now and I'm 6'4" also. It's nice that he's now got the option for larger people on the plans which lets you cut larger foot well sides. Funny enough I checked my deck piece twice to make sure I was screwing it on the right side. :)

I will say I like Fanatec and Fanatec products. I just bought the CSR wheel, Elite pedals, CSR shifters/set and I love it! A company should not hold grudges though, and should take criticism and use it to improve their products- not sever relationships over it. Although I don't think that even happened or if it did that isn't ALL that happened. Who knows. That's their business, not mine. I hope they get it sorted though as it would benefit Fanatec, SRT, and the customers/users/fans. That's all.

I watched all your DIY racing rig's and I am completely going to build this one. Almost chose the PVC one, But this one just looks so much cleaner. Gonna try and get a cheap bucket seat at a pick-n-pull.

i completed the pvc rig some time ago, and considered building this one for some time now but kept getting distracted while watching. for height and some differrent options, consider power seat a seat from a late model chevy suburban, its way more comfortable and adjusts height , tilt, lumbar etc 50 bucks from junk yard and if you are obsessed with the racing sead just swap the rail also some models have heated seats. you will need a 12v power source mounted under the rig with about 6ft of cable to reach your surge proitector.

Wish I would have watched this before building my rig. I just built my rig last week, got the blueprints and use the "tall" options for the pattern and it's still way too small for me and I'm only 6'0''. Im going to sell my rig for cost to a shorter friend of mine who fits in it perfectly. He's about 5'9''. Oh well on to my next build.

Hmm, that came out really well. Have to say once again Profile iron and a welder. For me atleast easier and you can also do it alot smaller but still sturdier. But on the other hand it looks less like a furniture. THat almost looks like a funny desk. My rigg more like industrial equipment but you could always add wood panels to mine if your inclined. Im too lazy, havent even painted mine. Iron is so easy to work with. But i guess for someone who havent welded before it might not. Dont know.

Shaun or Darin just got some major questions on this build where would you put the keyboard on this if there was more time and 2nd question was what kind of seat is that in that build. I Like the way it looks just looking at other ways of the DIY Rig. For me I do more then just sim race, I play Battlefield 3 so coming from my view about this as to where the keyboard would be

Just baught the plans... I am 6'3" and I noticed Darin had a little bit of a problem being comfortable in the rig. Is there a way to maybe add like 2-3 inches to the bottom of the footwell housing where the 4 bolts are to maybe raise it up a little? Do you think that would work?

1) Well I'm not going to continue discussing it here beyond this post (continued), it's probably a sensitive subject and honestly I doubt anyone but them knows the full story. I never heard that criticism, and I've watched every video SRT has made, many multiple times. Obviously (or not), I'm on SRT's side because of what I do know about Derin and what I do know about that company outside of the fued. That's just a judgement cal on my part but I bet I'm not alone in that thinking. -continued >>>

Make a simple two-frame spring suspension rig using 1" steel interlocking pipe and fittings. Attach two ButtKickers, one to the pedal end of the suspended frame and the other to the seat end. I'm designing one like that now.

Forgot to add that the pedals, seat and wheel will be mounted to the steel pipe by extra-strong cable ties through drilled holes, all nice and centered/balanced. No wood required.

what is the reason for using MDF instead of plywood for the steering wheel and pedals support. Plywood is cheaper and easier to work with.
@georgeswanson9483
@georgeswanson9483 10 жыл бұрын
I think the reason they went with MDF for the top and side panels was because it is easier to get a finished look. If you used plywood you'd need to use a lot of body filler and hours of sanding to get the same level of finish. That being said I'd use plywood too just because MDF is nasty stuff to work with and creates toxic dust.
@SnorwayFlake
@SnorwayFlake 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I'm going to build a rig soon (hopefully) and I think this is the one. I'm planing to build it mainly out of plywood, it is cheaper and easier to work with and don't split as easily. Regarding the look of the rig i think it will be just fine, at least for my first rig. Thank you for the reply and second opinion.

Take your time, multiply the hours you will spend by minimum wage. Add to that the cost of tools, materials and plans. Then add the cost of a racing seat because it won't look nearly as cool with a junkyard car seat installed on it. What kind of racing rig could you buy? If you have the spare time and you already have the tools and can scrounge all or some of the materials then you're in, otherwise it's not cost effective. The fact that you can customize it is cool and DIY has it's own satisfaction but know the full cost going in.
