TBH I wonder if that's why they're hesitant to move onto a new game. A lot of live service games can comfortably coast on success because they're in a space of large scale multiplayer games and unless you have a freak stroke of luck like Fortnite putting out a free Battle Royale mode to compete with PUBG the game will struggle and die off. The difference here and with SimCity is that Sims has been traditionally a singleplayer game, something that a competitor can much more easily provide. SimCity did have an online social aspect to it but it wasn't critical to the SimCity experience so City Skylines ended up eating its lunch. So I assume EA has opted to just keep the current gravy train rolling because they know it's successful.

Yes 100%. And if they care so much about not making players start from ground zero, maybe they consider making basic things like seasons and family gameplay apart of the base game instead of parsing out every single thing for profit. @TheVonMatrices2 ай бұрын
I do agree that it is a silly excuse because countless F2P games have developed their business models on having "seasons," which have regular game resets. However, I do think that game companies force themselves into a corner when they continue making expansions to an old game rather than developing a new one. They have the conundrum that they know the game is old and want to develop something completely new, but if they were to make a sequel, it would not have all the features of all the predecessor's expansions at launch, and that would result in negative reviews and sales problems. This happened to Cities:Skylines 2, and I think that launch had a chilling effect on sequels to games that have lots of expansions.

OH, but that's the thing, Fallout RUNS OUT OF THE BOX, I installed 1 on Win11 laptop, perfect, only needs fan patch for widescreen support and higher resolutions but it's perfectly playable without it. Soooooo re-releasing Fallouts is probably the cheapest possible ports because of how well they work without ANY updates. Other games are not so lucky, you can run directx patch for Wine3D for Infinity Engine games but Enhanced Editions took way more effort (and added a lot too). Sims PROBABLY will need more tweaking to combine old game +all expansions without any issues, but hey, they can do it just easier to sell endless expansions of 4.

I don't think they wanted to do this. Similar to the way they didn't want to release TS4 the way they did. I think they INTENDED to milk TS4 for many more years, got caught with their pants down with tons of competitors. At that point they're barely into production against these games dropping in 2025. So do they A, release something in 2028(or beyond) as they should, after watching their position dwindle, or, should they reuse assets, code, etc, to make a new project, then claim the asset re-usage is "better for the players because they get to keep their stuff" and try to sell that. If they can do this, and launch by 2025, they likely think they won't lose their position. This is clearly some EA exec trying to twist an L (taking a loss on position), and trying to screw players over (asset re-usage) as a W (players will get to keep their stuff and their saves!). What's ironic is that I highly suspect they won't release anything worth playing by 2025. Despite the hate, I genuinely used to think TS5 would kill any competitor, but I guess EA's incompetence literally is insurmountable.

I don't think they care about splitting the fan base at all. The simple cost/benefit analysis is that it doesn't make sense (in their purely capitalist pilled brains) for them to spend resources expanding the scope of the gameplay, when those same devs could be churning out infinite content packs that are basically pure profit. If anything, I see them signaling that they are looking at moving more towards the Roblox model, where players make content that they can sell to other players. I'm assuming they're thinking that they can justify any hit caused by potential gap in quality by lowered overhead, but this is all speculation. Also, it's worth noting that EA is the company that squirts out a new, barely changed Madden/FIFA every year. What they don’t - or shouldn’t - want is players who are both unhappy and unsatisfied, because those players are only staying until something better comes along. The “keep up unhappy, but make new stuff look better than it is so that they keep buying and chasing that promise of happiness” model completely destroys brand loyalty. I'd love there to be a remastered version of The Sims 3, perhaps optimised for my knackered old Asus laptop. Just to play it for old times sake, as it was my first PC Sims game. There seemed to be a lot more heart put into The Sims 3, I suppose Maxis were still involved at that point or people on the programming team that were fans of the original games. The DLCs/expansions in that game felt like optional improvements to the game, it was fun without them. Whereas with The Sims 4, you kind of need DLC to really immerse yourself in the game, what also annoys me about it is how buggy and laggy it is. I've had Sims getting stuck on each other in the same room and also, you have to babysit an adult Sim in the game and make sure that they don't blow up like a volcano over trivial things, keeping them emotionally regulated when their moods get changed at the drop of a hat.

Also my 2 cents as a software engineer. The age of the engine isn't the issue. As long as you've got people that understand how the engine works in its current state, you can expand upon it in ways that it was never originally designed for, to a point. The main issue that I'm getting from every new patch, is that they do not have adequate testing practices in place. Whether we're talking automated unit testing, integration testing etc, or even the QA team as a whole. I do not trust a team to rewrite or modify core components of the engine when they have proven time and time again they're unable to deliver basic content updates without breaking existing functionality. Edit: changed "an issue" to "the issue". Old software does eventually need to be replaced!
@DeinonychusCowboy2 ай бұрын
I am also a software engineer. The age of a platform is absolutely an issue lol, not only do new underlying technologies with more and better features become available over time, but compatibility with other integrated systems -- in the case of games, operating systems and hardware support are a huge one -- becomes an increasing issue the older a platform is. Not planning to rebuild, replace, migrate, is planning to have future infrastructure issues.
@sharpenednoodles2 ай бұрын
@@DeinonychusCowboy but not in this case, it's a 10+ year old 64 bit engine. The main limitations are its design roots in the MMO space. Its age of this codebase isn't the issue. I say this as someone who works daily on a 30+ year old C++ codebase. The limitations we've encountered are predominantly due to previous poor design decisions, which can, and have been fixed with extreme willpower and skill. Given modern abstraction layers (which we unfortunately don't have the privilege of working with) compatibility for this engine should be trivial. Blaming the age of the engine for the issues with the Sims 4 is a cop out. If there really are major issues that cannot be fixed without a complete rewrite (and that could be the case given the state of the game) then that is almost entirely related to poor design decisions within the core of the engine, not the age of the game.

I wish that were true but tbh, I doubt they'd actually care that much to let us be fooled. They'll obviously make a new sims game, it's just not as soon as we want it to be. I am sure it will be in another five years when they announce that. We'll be celebrating 20 years of Sims 4 before Sims 5 gets launched lol.

Project Rene is The Sims Online 2. It is completely designed around online play. No build mode - just a decorating mode. It will be multi-platform as basic as possible with excessive amounts of "in your face" microtransactions. The board at EA watched the first 30 minutes of "Ready Player One" then decided that was the best possible business model and set out to top it.

If we are honest, the monetization has killed the sims franchise years ago. Many people with self respect moved on from EA's sleazy monetization methods a long time ago. I'll try to see the positive here: no more Sims to destroy and ruin by EA. It was once possible to own a copy of a Sims game with all DLCs. It is not impossible to do that without being extremely rich. Each game was worse in that regard, now with DLC with sub-DLC. Imagine what a Sims 6 would be like. Thousands of DLCs. DLCs for the DLCs for the DLCs for the DLCs. Microtransactions all over the place. Pay to win multiplayer. I don't want to see the brand go into further destruction. Sometimes it's better for a brand to simply die.

For its time it’s astounding how amazing of a game it is, and it still holds up today, still managed to maintain its relevance. It truly opened the door to the genre of life simulators.

Citites Skylines took the reins from EA in the city builder genre. I think Paralives or InZOI will likley do the same here over the course of the next few years.
