The reason why smoke simulations look so similar to water simulations is because from a physics/engineering perspective, they are pretty much identical. In science we refer to gases and liquids as 'fluids', because their behaviours can be modelled using the same sets of equations (Navier-stokes et al.). The only (main) difference between the two is the density and viscosity of the fluid.

Sorry.. WHAT WAS THAT WHALE SHOT?? This is so incredibly good! Not gonna lie, I clicked on that video expecting that this thumbnail was clickbait. I am far far from being an expert (I only did many fluid sims for commercial use) but I would say that I have roughly 5% of the knowledge to make your 100 hour shot. Amazing work! And i expected to see the sub count at 100.000. Not under 20.000

The final shot looks very good. In fact it looks orr feels more like real water to me than the extreme white milky looking seawater in avatar. The wave afterwards probably needs some work but the 2 types of water splashes look very convincing

I just wanna say that "today water sims take just a few clicks due to great software" is simply wrong. I worked in a big budged vfx company and there are many artists spending weeks to get it right and carefully direct everything and build it up from scratch. Getting water to look good is master discipline.
@erikdoesvfx20 сағат бұрын
Emphasis on “basic water sims” from what I said there, as demonstrated by me creating one in 1 minute. However, I am painfully aware it takes weeks or months for complicated stuff in a production environment :)
