I just realized that if the super leaf was in 8, you'd have a defense against someone trying to spin boost with you in Anti-Gravity. It would have given so much purpose to that item!

That would have been so useful on 8's Rainbow Road. Most of my deaths on that course were honestly not really me just falling off, but rather some racer bumping into me, which would then force me to get a turbo speed boost I didn't want that would send me right off the edge and I couldn't do really do anything about it for the most part. So it was basically "touching another racer = instant death" which started to get annoying after a while. The Super Leaf returning sounds like it could have been a great counter to that.

@MarioSluggersFanclub usually, when we both boost off each other the other racer is still very close, often trying to continue to boost off you. This would allow you to punish that for the other player while you take the small boost for yourself.

The weird thing about 7 is that it is somehow unmemorable and yet every time I look at it, it might have some of the most unique level tropes in the franchise, or at least twists on the usual ones. Piranha Plant Slide, Wuhu Island making two appearances, a pirate graveyard, an ice track in space, Music Park, Neo Bowser City, a desert marketplace... It's great!

MK7 simultaneously has some of the best and worst new tracks in the series. Some of the worst tracks (in my opinion) are Toad Circuit, Daisy Hills, 3DS Mario Circuit, Cheep Cheep Lagoon, and the series' worst Bowser Castle, but you also have some of the best like 3DS RR, the Wuhu tracks, Wario Shipyard, Neo Bowser City, and Pirahna Plantslide. Tbh some of the retro courses were pretty unmemorable as well, and 7 one of the worst MK rosters.

i think one of the main reasons it's unmemorable is because MK8, which came out less than 3 years later, completely blew it out of the water in terms of quality. at the time of it's release, MK7 was extremely memorable and revolutionary, but has now been overshadowed by 8 being such a success

I think the biggest problem in this game was the lack of a versus mode. It may not be a big deal for some, but I honestly could have spent a lot more hours on in if I could "create my own grand prix".

There is a versus mode, but it's exclusive to multi-system local play. That was always my biggest critique as well back in the day, sometimes i just wanna play a handful of tracks by myself, but I wanna play a certain list of tracks instead of just doing a cup in grand prix

Also the thing that ruined the game for me. The fact that I just straight up couldn't chose to play any particular track when I wanted and had to do them all in a grand prix each time meant it got stale fast. What good is it having really good tracks if the game won't let me play them when I want like every other mario kart?

Yeah the glider was modified to be much more restrict in 8 and Tour. Because frankly you can do absurd shortcuts with 7's gilder handling lol. (Still it was really nice and certainly more fun to control)

My favorite part of the Tanooki Tail was using it like a propeller on glider sections. It would boost you up just a little bit more

Funny thing about the Tanooki tail is that it can also reflect explosions from Bob-ombs. Combine that with its other uses and it's a fairly powerful item.

I think 7 laid the ground work for 8 to be the powerhouse that it is. The new tracks are fantastic. 3DS Rainbow Road is the best Rainbow Road ever. It’s gonna be hard for them to top it. Also, Gliding is one of the best new features in a MK game. Overall, really solid. 8.5/10 Edit 6 months later: Forgot to talk about underwater. While it may not seem like such a big deal at first and doesn’t play all the different, it allows for older tracks to be expanded on and allows for more creativity in other maps too

I agree, i'd say that the more safe nature of Mario Kart 7, as it is a portable entry, helped the main development effort on the big console release. With the Wii U's HD capable hardware, they managed to pull crazy stuff from the bases of Mario Kart 7. The controls are an extension of it, same for the practice of remixing the classic tracks by making the fact they're remakes less obvious, it really comes down to this. I'd say it's the same case as SM3DW with SM3DL really.

The fire flower is a much more strategic item than you think, it’s not just a spam it and it’s done item, each fireball throw decreases the time you keep the flower faster, and if you’ve thrown 3 fireballs and throw a 4th, the first one the current 3 disappears, so you you don’t spam and try to aim it, you can hit people more consistently with it, as it’ll go farther and you have more time to keep it.

I could say a similar thing about the Lucky 7 and Crazy 8 items, I never understood why people just spam all the items right away. Im always looking for spots to use specific items when i get those lol. The only ones i use right away would be the star and Blooper, but i hold onto the others so i can use them later. People dont realize how good that item is when you use it right.

While Toad Circuit was a questionable addition, wave 3 will give us Rock Rock Mountain/Alpine Pass and Rainbow Road, which is really sweet! Here's hoping that we'll see Wario's Shipyard/Galleon, Maka Wuhu/Wuhu Mountain Loop and Shy Guy Bazaar in future waves.

The one HUGE caviot for the leaf in higher level play is that it's hard to defend yourself whilst drifting. If you use the leaf while drifting, it will send you slightly to the side. Not only does this make you go wider, and slower, it can also lead you to bumping into a wall and losing all your speed plus your drift

Super leaf also allowed you to collect extra coins in bursts doubling your hitbox size, it had some really cool niche purposes and if timed correctly let you use it and get another item immediately. I believe it also stalled you a bit in the air for some extra distance which never really had much use but was neat.

One of my fave things about the Super Leaf was that spamming it while gliding like a helicopter would give you some lift letting you be airborne for longer while being invulnerable to red shells when that matter most

The other thing about the super leaf is it's even more useful than most people think. Active items such as green shells are deflected like they've hit a wall, dormant red shells actually home in on other drivers if you hit them with a tail. Arguably the best trait is the ability to become immune to bob-ombs. Just spam the tail spin and you will knock the explosion away from you

right, people have no idea how many times the super leaf has saved me from being bomb sniped out of 1st by the person in 2nd, i remember one time i wacked the bomb back and it hit the user that tried sniping me 😂 definitely not close to the worse, if timed properly you can get a new item which adds a bit of skill to the item imo

Personally, I quite like the underwater driving. You don’t really drive slower or steer worse (not that I can remember), but you do fall slower. While it does mess with retro tracks a bit, it does make for new tracks with interesting areas, like the large underwater jumps in Cheep Cheep Lagoon. Though I do feel that it’s potential in track design was more realized in 8 than 7, as there aren’t many use cases in 7, and it’s kinda just… there sometimes. Really, it’s something I find 8 utilized better than 7.

My friends always questioned me why 7 is my favorite Mario kart game. And that's fair, "out of all games 7 is the one?" In my opinion 7 does the new mechanics fantastically! I really love the gliding and underwater segments. And even do it better than 8. Adding the glider to older tracks makes it way more interesting and fun!

I remember this game so fondly. At some point I was grinding for the WR on maka wuhu before the patch that sealed away glitch to IMMORTALIZE MY LEGACY. I did it, but now that I'm older I harbor some suspicion that I had actually managed to be the best and get my name to the top... If anyone has seen Blazeboyfire on the top time for Maka Wuhu using a shy guy, I will finally be vindicated. Great video and beautiful editing as always!

In extra defense of the Blooper regarding other entries - In DS, using it on AI opponents would cause them to constantly swerve back and forth, effectively reducing their overall speed

I think the main reason the super leaf didn’t return was that imo the super horn was designed to be the super leaf 2.0, as one of the biggest problems with the leaf was that it lasts forever and you can’t get rid of it. So to fix it, they instead made it one strong blast instead of many smaller ones.

Uncontrollable glider sections are literally just cannons, but your glider deploys. It makes the cannons make a little more sense, and since pretty much none of the original tracks in MK7 have cannons (not that I can remember anyway), I don’t think that’s a problem with MK7 specifically.

I never understood the hate for the super leaf item either. Its a fine enough item, and differentiates itself just enough from the other 1st place items that its interesting to have around. Having just bananas and green shells is very dull, the leaf fulfils a slightly different purpose and I love that. Also, 7 is better than 8 and 8 deluxe. Absolutely despise pretty much everything on a mechanical level with 8, most specifically the item balancing. 7 does it so much better and the driving is actually a little interesting compared to 8's "hold the drift...." and nothing else. I think its the weirdness you described with the controls to 7 that I really like, I know exactly what you mean by it being not quite describable.

For the 3DS servers, I think it helps that the 3DS uses in-house servers unlike the Wii which used external services hosted by gamespy for its online functionality. In addition, parts of the 3DS's online infrastructure are also used by the WiiU and some Switch games, so that's also likely been a great contributing factor in the continued support for the system's online functionality.

Absolutely loved this game when it came out. Played a ton of it on my won and with friends. Unfortunately, it's mostly eclipsed by MK8D in basically every way, so there's not much reason to go back to it. Really glad Rainbow Road 3DS is being included in the MK8D Booster Course Pass though!

The tail is cool too because it’s the only item (until the POW) that lets you attack racers next to you which is cool. Other than that, you have to either awkwardly get right in front of them to hit them with a banana behind you or let them get in front of u to hit them with a shell or something. But I guess the POW is a nerfed tail since you can only use it once. Idk, kinda makes sense.

It pains me that you didn't mention any of the modding scene this game has. It might be smaller than MKWII or MKDS, but it's still very prevalent and is decently sized. Please check out CTGP-7. Wish you would've at least mentioned it in this video. I mean, we've literally made hundreds of cts, tons of new characters, new karts and kart parts, and more! CTGP-7 fixes the problem of no versus mode and also adds a mission mode, along with tons of new features! Please check out our modding scene before saying that it's not really there.

Most of the contention towards the super leaf comes from that it's far too easy to stunlock other players to oblivion. Online trolling like this was a fairly common occurrence too. Used to do it to my friends all the time!

Haha, it's funny you mentionned that the online is still up, I have an explanation below. But yeah, I actually love Mario Kart 7, very underrated entry in the series. I wish it had mission mode but you know what, I actually think it's a great entry. It's sort of this mix of MKWii and 8, heck I'd argue 7 looks a tad better graphically than Wii in the lightning department. The physics are very good even if they're a bit, how to describe them... stiff? Like, it's very tight compared to 8 and Wii. But the gliding and underwater physics feel much better in 7 I'd say, especially since you have full glider control compared to 8. Track-wise, as you said there's a great selection, very nice new tracks, especially Rainbow Road. And for retro, I'd say this entry was the first to really spice them up which MK8 took to the extreme. Here they really feel fresh while feeling like their good old-fashionned selves. If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be "clean" I have to say. The controls feel good, the presentation is neat, the overall feel is good. It plays it safe but as it is a portable entry, there's not much to ask from it. It's easy to pick, and basically Mario Kart in its purest form. Oh by the way, yeah at 18:15 when you mentionned the Wii's online closing before the 3DS. Just know that WFC's closure was out of Nintendo's control. It was reliant on GameSpy's online services, which IGN sold to Glu Mobile who shut them down just after. Developers had until May 30, 2014 to cut the services who relied on it, including WFC. The 3DS and Wii U rely on the now "legacy" Nintendo Network servers which are fully operated by Nintendo. And yeah I don't think they'll close in the near future. Anyway, great video Silok! I have the same feelings towards the kart customization system, which has impacted my experience playing 8/8 Deluxe with folks locally: if I'm playing with someone new or not as experienced, often times they take several minutes flicking through all the kart parts to build a kart, when I know exactly what I want due to all the time I've sunk into deluxe. Like you said, They really should make a list of pre-made kart setups (similar to DD, DS, and Wii), or let us save kart loadouts for quicker selection (or maybe even a mode that forces everyone to use the same basic kart setup as a "quick play" of sorts, kinda like how Super MK/MK64/MKSC didn't have ANY sort of kart selection, just character selection)

What’s funny about the blooper is that in 3ds, the bottom screen exists, so it quite literally has no effect since the bottom screen doesn’t get covered

I'd bet that the blooper is seen more frequently is because of the way it uses the 3D. I remember reading in Nintendo Power that it was seeing the blooper ink hit the screen that sold Miyamoto on why the 3DS needed a Mariokart.

Cart customization was a great addition. 7 has better gliding than 8 and Rock Rock Mountain is the best display for gliding. Wario Shipyard is a great underwater track, but the other uses of underwater are meh. Section tracks were a fresh way to make longer tracks, and I think Rainbow Road is a beautiful display of that. The biggest problems I have with Mario Kart 7 are a lack of a versus mode and only 6 battle courses of which only 3 are new.

The off-road stat is huge for some maps like kalamari desert. With the red monster tires, you can drift off the road and mini boost. This helps reach the shortcut at the start of kalamari desert and maple treeway and maybe some others.

The only thing I like about the blooper in most MK games is that the AI start wiggling and slow down, which makes 200cc, or sometimes mirror when my brain doesnt work, a little easier.

In the case of the leaf, the reason I hate it is I almost _never_ got it in first. It was always in 2nd-5th or something like that, when I need an item to _catch up_ , not a defensive item. In terms of the blooper, obviously getting red shells is better, but I feel that it adds to the chaos of item hazards to the race; sure, it is less effective than shells, but that's kind of the point, it's a hazard that isn't detrimental to get hit by. In all fairness I'm thinking of this more from a receiver perspective as opposed to a user perspective, but you're going to get hit by these more often than you use them, so I think it's fair to judge according to how they will typically be experienced. I wouldn't mourn the loss of the blooper, but I think it adds a further sense of chaos to the item selection. But yeah, MK7 had WAY too many of those; too much blooper is just annoying.

one thing i never hear people talk about regarding the underwater diving is a neat little mechanic i found when i was a kid. so in some mario kart games (at least in DS and 7 to my memory) you can tilt your kart back and forward a bit in the air when going off any ramp. in ds, this had no real consequence or use, but in 7, if you enter the water with the nose of the kart facing as far down as possible, you can "dive" into the water, giving you more speed when you enter and letting you glide a little bit off the ground till you lose that extra speed, letting you skip early obstacles in the water, reach some shortcuts (like in cheep cheep lagoon) gives you a headstart. also, "off-road" is actually useful in some tracks like kalimari desert, since the main path on some tracks aren't made of asphalt or pavement, and instead have you driving on dirt or sand, which give you less traction (both speed grip and steering grip) if you have low off-road. (also needless to say they're good for reaching shortcuts that require you go on terrain that otherwise slows you down)

The leaf is bad because of something you mentioned: it takes up your item slot - if you're in first place and you get it, it effectively leaves you without any defence when it runs out whereas something like a shell or a banana you can hold indefinitely and pick up a spare item to use if it gets hit.

Probably because this is one of the more "tame" Mario Kart titles that I didn't remember it that much as well, but it does has its own share of memorable tracks (3DS Rainbow Road is really beautiful). I find the addition of gliders interesting but more importantly I loved that they changed on doing tricks in this game to simply press R and that's really nice

I personally do not like the glider because it devotes more gameplay time to not being on the track while also not giving your hands a break like cannons do. It also trivializes going off certain ramps which otherwise require "skill" (alignments and/or inputs) to land a shortcut, stay on the road, make a following corner, or even just save time. Meanwhile, I like bikes in MKWii because they reward good alignment, which feels great given the amount of control you have over your vehicle in that game (especially with inside drift). There really isn't much to compare with bikes and gliders, except I guess that bikes still have to drive on the track.
