I'm 61, no health issues, and on no meds. . . A Kaiser doctor prescribed Statins for me "Sight Unseen". . . ? 5'10",190lbs,semi active ; I asked him to recuse himself from my future health care. . . I follow several medical forums , one presented LDL as a viral particles collection system. Is it wise to compromise the immune system in the time of a Pandemic?

Ever since my 80s gma started simvastatin, poorer mobility and memory is shocking. Truly believe its the statin. And not be told to take coq10 is appallingly unethical.

From 12% to 8% - yes, in one sense that's substantial. Reframed though, it can be viewed as the chance of not having an event going from 88% to 92%. So there's 24/25 chance that someone is taking the medicine to no effect (22 who won't have an event anyway, and 2 who will have an event anyway, 1 who will avoid an event). One out of 25 are helped. To me that's not worth the effort and leaves twice as many people still at risk than are helped. It's a very gray area. My value judgment is it's not worth it. Someone else looking at the same numbers may come to the opposite conclusion and say it is worth it. I just hope that it's not a matter of people taking a statin and thinking they've done everything they can or need to in order to reduce their risk.

Thanks. Any thoughts on pitavastatin? My understanding is it’s better as a CV anti inflammatory, has beneficial effects on blood glucose, while lowering ApoB. The drawback is that it’s still under patent.

Kinpatu... good question. I'd like to hear more about Pitavastatin and beneficial effects on blood sugar. And hello Doctor Ritter!

High kinpatu and Bart! I only have one patient who takes pitavastatin. I'm not sure how he ended up on it, his primary care doc gave it to him. It is super impractical because it costs an arm and a leg. Person has to be rich to be on it. Further, I tried it in a couple patients, who felt terrible on it, same as they had felt with atorva and rosuva. Pitavastatin is not well tested in secondary prevention or primary prevention. It decreases LDL and is a statin, so they are trying to piggy back on all the other statin trials. Pitavastatin increases blood sugar, like the other statins. I got this off the Livalo website: "Increases in HbA1c and Fasting Serum Glucose Levels: Increases of each have been reported with statins, including LIVALO. Optimize lifestyle measures, including regular exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, and making healthy food choices."
