@GroovingPict no he wrote it for the family. He actually really hated sinéad. He was very religious, and she ripped a foto of the pope on stage. He really did not like her.

I think what's unusual about Sinead's voice is that she can occasionally give it a sort of hard edge and then suddenly pull it back to so soft and wistful.

That version is the ultimate for me! I wish I knew what she does in the "to yooou", besides the distortion, I think she makes some scale/note change that makes it SO INTENSE! Almost like out of tune, but in the right way! Sinead is GENIOUS!

Have a fond memory attached to this song. One night many years ago, I was just shopping in a grocery store like any other regular excursion. I’ve long ago accepted how likely it is to hear middle-of-the-road pop fodder in stores everywhere. But that night, this tune came on over the PA in there. And that was really something to me, to hear a beautiful ballad amidst all the other disposable tracks.

Great song ,great performance by her . She passed away last year unfortunately . She had a 17 yr old son called Shane who was found dead from suicide in 2022 . Her son was the love of her life he was everything to her I guess the pain of his loss was unbearable for her . Totally understandable very sad , so sad . Her music still will live on though !

Prince actually wrote this song when a long time live-in servant and cook left her employment because of a death in her family, hence the line, "I can eat my dinner l in a fancy restaurant." SO gave the song emotion it didn't have in the original obscure Prince recording. As incredibly talented as Prince was, we was also incredibly insecure and did not like anyone covering his songs; this case in particular he voiced opposition (once a song is copyrighted any one can record it as long as they pay the appropriate royalties) to this cover as it became such a monster hit.
