Written by Prince this song was everywhere in 1990. Sinead is a talented artist who lost her career for expressing her political beliefs on national tv. I truly miss her presence in the music landscape. The tear shed in this video was not contrived. As she sang, the emotions of her mother death i think it was hit her like a ton of bricks

she's still performing and giving interviews so she didn't lose her career.. and she tore up the Pope's picture on SNL and told everyone that the pope was a criminal and the catholic church were abusing children.. she told us to wake up. And still... people keep telling this big fat herd of people the truth about their society but they just won't listen.. so the misery and predatory economics continues.

Her diagnosed borderline personality disorder and agoraphobia, along with her toxic personality, has ruined her personal and business associations throughout her life. You can't be a pop star - or any other type of star - when both your public and private persona is hateful. Her incredibly nasty personality is well demonstrated with this Twitter post made in Nov. of 2018: "But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that's what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting." Great talent with a lot of problems.

Now they are both gone, with the report today of Sinead's death. 😢 She is Irish, and she created a controversy when, on Saturday Night Live, she tore a photograph of Pope John Paul II, in protest of the Catholic priests who molested children. @Anne - Troy, Fire on Babylon, Three Babies, etc. Sinead writes her own songs. Her debut album “Lion and the Cobra” reached widespread critical acclaim and was arguably best album of the year. This was before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. Yes, she has done her own arrangements for and covered a handful of songs by other artists. Something many legendary singers and bands do and have always done. She has been specifically requested by iconic rock bands and composers to do them the honor of performing live renditions of their songs. Yet she has written or co-written the majority of her music.

It is great to see you reacting to Sinéad O'Connor. Sinéad has done a lot of great songs, starting with her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. An incredibly angry, wonderful album. I'd recommend trying a song or two from that album. If you want one of the most quietly rageful songs ever, try the song Troy. If you want something dancy, Mandinka is a great one. I Want Your (Hands On Me) is another great one. I love everything about that album. From the same album as the one you just listened to, Black Boys on Mopeds is a great one - a bit on the sad side, but still wonderful. The Emperor's New Clothes is another great one from the same album. She has done a variety of different musical styles, including a reggae album and an album of traditional Irish songs. Unfortunately, she has had a pretty hard life, dealing with abuse as well as a hard struggle with mental illness, which she has spoken quite publicly about to help destigamtize mental illness. Her musical work is well worth exploring.

After this song became a big hit, she was asked to host Saturday Night Live (and this is when she tore a picture of the Pope up in front of everyone) which didn't go over well, it affected the rest of her career. @Steve - Granted, this was clearly her biggest hit but she wasn’t exactly a one hit wonder. She was already a successful artist prior. Her debut album “ Lion and the Cobra “ reached widespread critical acclaim and was hailed by some as best album of the year. Through the 80’s and 90’s her music videos played constantly. At least a couple dozen songs on rotation. Including one written for an Academy Award winning film. Famous composers were requesting her to perform their songs live. Also, she wasn’t blaming the Catholic Church for her problems. She was protesting against the silence of nations who were covering up the crimes of child abuse within the church. Something that was very much justified.

Sinnead shedding a tear shows she's feeling and expressing, as a Stoic I can feel her pain and emotions, I'm affected so little but moved so much.

Watched today because we lost her recently. You all are so observant and good at what you do because you can hear her talent straight away. She got black balled in US for being a rebel. But she continued to make music but not widely heard in US. I will be checking out her more recent albums now that she's gone to appreciate her stunning talent as a singer.

The Lion and the Cobra is a fantastic album, "Troy" really shows her singing ability.

thanks for reacting to Sinead. She was an icon, but there's a complex history there, a mix of PR and some personal challenges she faced in her life. I believe she cut off her hair as her label wanted to market her based on her looks....Her voice though. So amazing. She definitely is someone you should listen to, even if you don't react in video, as her work is pretty phenomenal. Her own songwriting is amazing. Her first album, The Lion and the Cobra is phenomenal and very different. Glad we have her talent preserved through her music.
