I just listened to the original Les Wanyika's version and i saw they did a great job, nevertheless, kudos goes to the Soukous Star for also doing a fantastic job out of the tune. The lead and rythm guitars of Lokassa and Shiko really oiled the tune with a superb soukous flavour, anchored by the solid baseline of Lokito. Listen to both of them on a good speakers and you would understand what i mean!!! Long live Africa

Omari Shabani of les wanyika composed the song,he played the lead guitar and the lead voice was by Issa Juma. These were Tanzanian musicians based in Nairobi Kenya in the 70s and 80s. Sadly most of them are dead now. Les wanyika had just broken off from another group Simba wanyika when they recorded this song.

Hi all, i still believe this a very beautiful night-club rendition of Sina Makossa and one of the best around. These guys are all very talented musicians that have paid their dues. Lokassa Y'Mbongo, Shiko Mawatu, Lokito Ngouma, Machine and Jona the vocalist. Imagine yourselves far away from home... Say in the UK, US, Canada or so and wish to listen to a tune from home... Africa indeed has talents

@jt21419 and ScottShutter: Makossa is a beat founded by Cameroonian Saxophonist extraordinaire Manu Dibangu (remember Soul Makossa of late 1960's). Dibangu founded this while on a working tour with OK Jazz in Kinshasa (Leopardville). In Congolese dialect of Swahili, makossa has the same meaning as East African makossa. After the trailblazing by M Jackson & Rihanna, I hope one one day Californians don't get to ask " makossa is a Beverly Hills beat , what is it doing in Cameroon?"

actually but it is not swahili bora like the one spoken in Kenya and Tanzania. It is a mix with French and Lingala. A return to the roots to a certain extent, as Les Wanyika have borrowed rythm from the congolese soukous.

Did I say Professor Juma! Freudian slip, the result of years of Professor Juma and His Bycycle Troupe... I meant Prof Omar. The band originally came up from Tanzania. I was there the day they arrived. I think two members were of Zairien origin but my memory is getting dim. I could be thinking of Super Mazembe who were never in Les Wanyikas league..
@Bellingham003512 жыл бұрын
nyaffs: Thank you. Thank you very much. Geographically you are spot on. Historically some people are stuck on colonial take away history and have never bothered with recent research. The hosting ground was on the west coast where Tipo Tibb had his warehouse. All this these later day tribes were just left overs. So swahili must have originated from eastern Congo. Swahili did not originate from Tanzania or Kenya. Try reading ' Islams black Slaves'

This is just a shitty and very ridiculous version of that song. Anyone who knows this song for as long as i do knows that it definately sounded nothing like this and what the above puppets did was a poor attempt to modify this song & they should be ashamed of themselves coz they ended up infuriating those of us who love Les wanyika. Kwendeni huko mu oze na upuzi wenu. For those who call this a club version i wonder which clubs yu have been to and which you now go to.
@darelet6 жыл бұрын
that's a very respected band that's even more famous than les wanyika.. it is simply an honour for the mighty soukous stars to even cover a wanyika song. they are kinshasa congolese so they don't speak swahili, the reason for the poor articulation
