I'm an ancient Gen Xer and only discovered wet shaving in the mid 2000s. I remember in college, in the 1980s, I was shaving in the dorm bathroom with a Gillette Trac II razor, which was the only razor I'd ever used, and I saw a guy using a DE razor. I kidded him about using an "old man's razor," and he said something like, "It shaves better than what you're using." It took twenty years after that for me to realize he was right. 🙂

My father shaving with the safety razor was the first shaving I ever seen but he started shaving with the catrage razor in the mid 70's and so the safety razor ended up in the back of the drawer until I started shaving with it 2 weeks ago. I actually started shaving with an electric razor at 15 but before i was 16 had switched to the catrage razor but i wish I'd chosen the safety razor first now that I've started shaving with it. Its actually older than me so it could be anything up to seventy years old its definitely over sixty.

"The way your grandpa did." My grandpa worked for Philips. So he and my father shaved with an electric razor. And so did I for 30 years. I started shaving with a safety razor 4 years ago. I discovered it by accident. When I found an antique safety razor on an antique market. And started some online searching to find some information about safety razors. To my huge surprise I found out that it was still possible to get blades for my century old razor. And that they are even still made today. I started collecting vintage safety razor's and shaving every second day with a modern one. (My first one was a Merkur Classic 1904. Now I use a Rex Ambassador.) I never though that one day I would look forward to my next shave. Instead of just something that needs to be done.

I could never shave with an electric razor it burned the face of me and never gave a close shave. Started shaving with an old safety razor of my father's about 2 weeks ago and won't go back to to the catrage razor not that there was anything wrong with it but it's much easier to get a close shave with a safety razor.

@@Minime163 You'll find real straight razors shave much better with lower chance of nicks and cuts than the modern day Shavette style imitation that you are using. The downside is you need to learn how to strop and maybe also sharpen it too which also adds on the cost of stones and strops. Once you have those then nothing is cheaper or more comfortable in the long run, never buy a blade again in your life. I used two straights (a 4/8 Schulze and a 5/8 Dovo) for years especially at weekends but now my eyesight is not up to it anymore due to a combination of short sightedness and old age meaning needin different glasses for different distances...

You will save a fortune over time and truly enjoy shaving again and have fun trying different products. I love your stance on shaving cream for a safety razor, a lot of purists will turn people away by telling them they have to do the whole brush and soap thing or somehow it’s magically not gonna work right. I was avoiding using DE razors for a while because of that but at the end of the day shaving cream is shaving cream and if it works for 5 or 6 blades being dragged across your skin then surely it’d plenty for a single blade to glide its way around! I appreciate you making videos like this, as this is a skill that alot of people don't have. Even my grandfather never used or not for long, used a safety razor when he was my age in 1982. I'm happy to see so many people making good videos introducing others to this kind of shaving, and I enjoy it. No, it's not a hobby for me, it's a necessity of my work and grooming. But, it feels better. It feels more masculine, and it is most certainly cheaper. I'm almost to the point of not having as many nicks, but razor burns are still common. Especially trying a new shaving cream in a tube rather than aersol can without the brush to really get it lathered up. I've been shaving since high school in the 90s, and just started using a safety razor a week ago. I've heard of them some years back, but never seen one until recently-the Van Der Hagen at a store-so I've decided to try it. This is probably the most helpful video I've seen so far. I understand what aggressive, moderate, and mild means asta concept, but I can't find online what type of shaver this basic 85mm VDH razor is. I haven't seen or used enough DE razors to know, and the search results I've found about this basic $20 VDH razor don't say if it is aggressive or mild or whatever. I've been having more razor burn, nicks, and bumps than I've had in decades, which, I've heard lots of guys say that's part of the learning curve with basically re-learning how to shave again (like being 14 again haha). My shaves have taken much longer recently, and today I decided to speed through it and do quick/short up and down strokes like I normally would with a cartridge razor, and I'm feeling the itch right now 😂 I think the grain of my facial hair is starting to grow in mildly different directions now-compared to how it used to grow before this new razor-like up is down now, and i think it's starting to grow from left to right now, and the directions on both sides of my neck are different as well... I'm getting used to the angle, but I can't seem to shave upwards with this thing, and I need to because some of the direction of my grain on the throat moves that way, but when I shave up, the razor just won't touch my skin. If I tilt the angle any more, it just would not be possible to shave because the angle would be too steep... So idk, should I look for a more aggressive or mild razor? If I could figure out what type of shaver this VDH is, then I'll at least know if I should lean towards aggressive or mild. I keep a beard, so I just edge up may face, but I shave my throat every day, and that hair grows rapidly, coarse/prickly, and thick (idk if those details mean anything). Thanks for the video 🪒💈

I love the shavette too or cut throath as I call it doesn't shave quite as close as the safety razor but still very good with wilkinson sword blades but I actully like shaving with it even better than the safety razor because you feel the blade on your face and you have to concentrate more on shaving which I like. Another thing i learned from sinatra is its ok to give your face a dry rub of the razor which I've been doing nearly scence i started shaving some shaving forums are totally against it, I got a good shave from a bad derby razor blade in my shavette from doing it.
@haydenwayne637
@haydenwayne637 5 ай бұрын
A genuine carbon steel straight razor is better than a shavette. However a straight requires lots of tender loving care to keep it happy but with a shavette you just change the blade. Straights are also gentler and much more forgiving than shavettes due to the blade being much more flexible at the edge whereas shavettes are very stiff and unforgiving of errors. That said if you can shave injury and irritation free with a shavette then you will have an easy time with a proper carbon or silver steel straight.

@@haydenwayne637 Yes there is no place for errors with shavettes. Shavettes for me are more of a cool thing, a fun way to spend free time without maintaining a real straight razor and let's be honest it is way harder to die from a shavette than from a straight. Shavettes are an ultimate cool thing. If someone doesn't feel it then they are just not worth it. DE Safety Razor is just the king of shaving.

My grandpa used a GEM razor that took a single edge blade like you might use in a paint scraper. Don't know if the blades were a kind for shaving or utility work. Wish I could ask him as he passed a long time ago. He liked Aqua Velva aftershave too. A man's man. Butcher, WW2 navy man, fireman, and fire chief.👍👍

I just bought my first safety razor today, and I am an old 46 years old! I was scared of these, because I just don't want to cut my face. I was pleasantly surprised! Those 5 blade dollar club things are going in the garbage. Mach 3 can go in the garbage too. After I finished shaving about an hour ago, and my face feels great! I bought the Van Der Hagen twist adjustable. It's a good start!

I'm thinking seriously to shift from cartridge to safety razors, and one of the things that held me was having to use the shaving soap and brushes seen in other videos, I was wondering if I could just use my good old shaving gel and you just game me the answer! I have nothing against the more traditional soap and brush, I'm sure it must be extremely smooth and fantastic, in fact, if I delve deeper into this world I might get that too, but I didn't want to loose the flexibility of just using my canned gel or foam for a quick, hassle-free shave.

Thankfully my dad taught me how to shave with a safety razor about 5 years ago when I was 15 so I basically started shaving with safety razors, only used a cartridge razor for about a year before I learned which is when I started growing hair on my face.

I just started looking into the whole wet shave thing. My uncle used an old Gillette in the 70's(probably before that), I remember opening it up and closing it. He used a brush and Barbasol shaving cream. My dad always used an electric razor, and I started electric and went to the old shick cartridge razors. I ordered up a King C Gillette, brush and cup from Van Der Hagen. First shave wasn't great, didn't seem to cut close at all. Figured I'd try again, maybe there is a learning curve. Looked at the razor and found out I had it put together wrong. Can't wait to try again later and see how it really does! Thanks for the video's!

Just shaved for the first time even with an DE razor. I can’t believe how much less irritated me skin is versus a Gillette Fusion 360. I used a cheap $20 Viking with an Astra Superior Platinum. In going to invest in to a vintage Gillette slim or Rockwell 6c so I can adjust the thing. But TBH I a surprised how well this went for the 1st time. LESS irritation than my One Touch Philips electric… crazy!!!

I’ve never seen a two piece. Interesting. I have a three piece with a bamboo handle and it shaves like a champ. I also have used the butterfly ones, or whatever you call them, and I didn’t like them. I use a shaving soap. I find it much much better than using and aerosol shaving cream. From other KZbin videos, I’ve learned that aerosol kills the fat in shaving cream and it’s better to use shaving soap, or shaving creams in jars or tubes. I’ve only used the shaving soap and it’s saved my face! I get the smoothest shave one ever had. I haven’t used a cartridge razor for ages now. I use Astra blades, but have heard feathers are sharper. How do they compare with Astra? I’m afraid they’ll cut me up and I’ve gotten so used to my regimen that I don’t want to mess it up. I also end my shave with a nice shaving balm

Great video for helping beginners but still entertaining for those who have watched awhile. I love a really cold splash of water on my face after a shave. Feels wonderful. Yes a safety razor mows through 5 days growth like a hot knife through butter with no tugging if you happen to read this and can’t decide whether to make the switch.

Switched to a safety razor 10 years ago and will never ever go back to cartridge or disposable razors. It helps that it takes me like 4 years to go through a pack of 100 blades which is so much cheaper than buying replacement razor cartridges that it's not even in the same universe.

I am Fairley new to safety razor shaving and found your channel and like your content. In my searching of videos i found that not many people talked about what they do with used blades (how to to store them/get rid of them etc) and also what the printed 12 34 means on blades. If you are looking for content i think it would be interesting if you brought these subjects up in one of your chats/videos.

the numbers and letters on the blades are used in the manufacturers quality control process and have no relevance outside of that. I store blades in a little glass jar where I superglued the lid on and cut a narrow slot in it just big enough to drop the blades through. When it's full it goes to recycling.

Thanks for a Great Video! I Am that "Newcomer" and I appreciate the simple, straightforward presentation. SO can I bug you for some free advice??? I'm 60, and I've used cheap cartridge razors - well, forever. Typically, I shave before I shower, and I just use just cold water. And I tend to use the razors way too long. I'll sometimes have just a tiny spotting of blood, but I wash in the shower and its never an issue. But I got a "wild hair" and just bought an old Gillette Tech razor on eBay. AND I'm asking here because you are the first one I've seen that's not doing an elaborate "Ceremony" - NOT that there's anything wrong with that! Maybe I'll feel differently once I start using my new-old razor. But what blades would you recommend for a Beginner? Is it really necessary to shower first? As I said, I shower second to avoid getting any blood on my shirts. Crazy to try without lather? Is oil enough? I see some people put oil AND lather? Thanks!
@SinatraLennon
@SinatraLennon 11 ай бұрын
Even if you don’t shower before you shave, make sure that you run some warm water across your beard stubble just to soften it up a little bit. As far as what blades you should use in that safety razor, I always use feather blades, but I also recommend BIC or even the ones you find down at your local Walgreens or CVS. Good luck and let me know how it goes! Don’t press hard and take your time.

For me shaving with a safety razor takes more time than with a cartridge razor. A safety razor is a lot cheaper though than a mach3 cartridge. When i'm in a hurry i use a cartridge razor but usually when i have time i use a safety razor for the first 2 passes (shaving with and across the grain) and combine that with a cartridge razor for the third pass (shaving against the grain) for that smooth finish. That way the cartridge razor lasts a lot longer and i can save some money.
