SINCERE - by BLAKUS?
//
And now for something completely different. Here's something I produced in the last two days. It is 100% generated by AI. How do you feel about this? At the moment I am mesmerized, anxious, excited, and in disbelief all at once. The lyrics of the song ask some of the questions I currently have spinning in my head!
I didn't write a single note or lyric. I resisted recording any new elements whatsoever. 100% AI generated and performed. I just gave the topic and keywords that described some of what I was after. It took hundreds of generations/iterations, and lots of curation and stitching everything together to make a complete song. I don't know how to feel.

It was fun while it lasted :( I can only take solace in that I was fortunate and lucky enough to live in a time to accomplish most of my artistic musical goals while creativity still had to come from within. This does sound great, which means its only a matter of time until an 8 year old with an ipad can do the same. Art is dead?

You're probably feeling like the illustrators did a little over a year ago when they saw AI-generated images arrive on the scene. It's all the more ironic given that many music composers have used AI images to illustrate their music, often without realizing it.

Well done! This makes me feel a bit sick but also that's how life goes. As far as I'm concerned we have had humans making the equivalent of ai generated music for a while so I'm cool with this. As you said, you did a lot of curation and stitching to make this work - Most likely because AI still struggles with intent which is one of the most important things when it comes to art. I think where AI music will really excel is giving people with 1 or 2 skills the ability to fill in the areas they struggle with (similar to what Ozone does, or Superior Drummer 3, or EZ Keys etc). The more I think about this the more excited I am about the future of music creation.

Took a day to consider and come back and listen again. Suspect the context is weighing heavily, but this song does move me emotionally on some level, can't deny it. Maybe it's that unnerving feeling in the pit of my stomach, like I'm looking over the edge of a long drop and something's telling me to step back a little but I can't. For the moment, this wouldn't have been possible without your excellent curation, or your instincts to pursue one of the many ideas it cranked out before you actually vibed with one. But I expect in the fairly near future, we humans are going to find ourselves fans of both human and AI artists. What we're hearing from these algorithmic models now is obviously trained on and regurgitating variations on what we've made musically as a species so far, but given time, more smarts, or maybe only more skillful and focused human prompting, this new capability could quickly be pushed into utterly new territory rather than imitative, to a place where it is actually pioneering new trails. It's wild to hear it 'imitate' complex fx chains and song writing styles with equally uncanny but undeniably intuitive results, without actually knowing anything about engineering or the craft of song writing. I used to think we were going to have to wait for 'sentience' or something like that before that was possible, but hearing this and after the things I just made myself in the last day of experimenting, I'm thinking with a human prompting creatively and curating, and with deeper and better controls, this is something akin to a radically new synthesis technology. I asked it to give me a gorgeous solo cello with the idea that I might sample it and build my own instruments out of what it can produce (this failed horribly with Google's model btw), and it didn't take long to start getting some good enough results that with enough attempts, I think it would be doable on some level anyway. But then I realized this was wasteful, considering there are real cellists I can sample, but also because clearly this tech as an engine is capable of so much more, so let's sample that instead and start building things right alongside my other samples and recordings and synths. I agree with those here who posted about this also pushing us to write more human music too, reaching deeper and pushing harder with the craft in ways that modern 'chasing the sound of success' these days doesn't tend to promote. I'm realizing more and more that I'm being forced to answer the question, non-hypothetically, why and who do I write music for? Was a bit relieved to sense that, just as don't write thinking I'll ever become a superior writer to J Williams and friends, I know it'll be silly to expect I'll write slicker or even, ironically, with the emotional depth that a future AI will be capable of, but I will still enjoy my successes and struggles just the same. This song shook me up enough to take a moment, and it took the human and the machine to make that moment work. For now... Beautifully done! Thanks for putting this out there the way you have.

That is...impressive. I really hate to say that whilst being glad that - for now (!) - only a professional like you, able to understand what makes sense in a musical way / who knows which outputs to discard or use is able to utilize ai for ´professional´ outputs. It is intimidating that ai is somehow able to understand vocal expressions and to recreate them. If tech like this becomes even more advanced and user-friendly (and it will!), us composers and other creatives will have no choice but to find other ways to make a living UNLESS society discards the concept of capitalism (...and I hate to say that!). Let me explain: AI will eventually become better at our craft and Mindfactory already proved, that even "creativity" (= recombining existing concepts) is not foreign to ai. Ai will become better than us humans, a weird imagination which we will probably have to deal with seriously sooner rather than later. My 2 cents

It's pretty bad actually, I check their progress regularly, it's like a very basic procedural generator. Yes, they sometimes post okay sounding stuff on their channel - it's cherrypicked and maybe modified by humans. I couldn't get anything even remotely good and non-generic from it in 100s of attempts however (only ONE sci-fi ambient track sounded okay for a background music, but even there modifications were required still). Suno AI is much more promising right now

If it took a lot of manual work to stitch things together then it's maybe not all that bad. So far I don't find the overall sound/arrangement impressive at all. Since it all comes from AI it probably won't be offensive haha. Would take me a half day to come up with something that seems more exciting sonically and arrangement wise. Ugh, this is difficult to listen to. Those of us who produce music of any genre for a living, we’re going to have to challenge ourselves to create music that stands out as “more human”. AI generated content like this sounds about as mediocre as most music created these days, and will undoubtedly force us to raise the bar and choose even higher quality over quantity more so than before. I guess I have two hopes with the future of AI music (and other creative outlets). 1. Markets gets saturated so quickly with too much AI content that people end up craving art that was created by another living soul. Not machine. 2. (this is a long shot and I’m not a fan of handouts) but perhaps the industries disrupted by this technology and the impact it has on the livelihoods of creators of all mediums will be subsidized for the losses from businesses moving to sourcing music from AI. I don’t know man, the future is as grey as ever. I’m fortunate that the people I work with value real music over AI (for now) but I look at my kids who have shown an interest in writing music like me, and the future of them growing up in a world with the competitive nature of AI is scary shit.

This is quite dangerous for a talented composer to be messing with Ai just to spark discussion. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. However, it’s not your fault and computer coders and creators of Ai technology need to have a serious think about the tools they are creating and where the line should be drawn. Adobe premiere has a fantastic remix tool that shortens and elongates arrangements using Ai. This is not available in software daws yet but I’m sure it’s coming. As soon as Ai starts writing rhythms, chords and melodies, I’m out. 😢

Why try to give more credence to something that's being used to try and replace real artists like you? @@cinematicgoodness7325oh, don’t misunderstand me. I’m terrified and devastated at what AI is doing to our creatives. The process of creating/curating this song made me quite emotional actually. This song is me trying to open eyes of people that may be still complacent about AI capabilities. I’m legitimately posing the question, will humanity find sincerity in AI art? The fact is, it’s capable of good art and it’s about to be everywhere. We’re about to find out if where the art comes from holds any value to people or not. I won’t be using it in my real work, but at some point in the future difficult decisions will have to be made by many, both creators and consumers. This should be a wake up call. I hear many brushing it off, I was one of them, up until a week ago. I’m frustrated it is this good and it’s only going to get better. It is only as good as it is because of every hardworking and brilliant creative that ever created before it. Doesn’t feel fair at all. I hope releasing this can help bring more discussion and debate.

@@Blakus I feel like the time for debating is reaching an end. At some point, we need to take action. Because to me, this only has the appeal of sounding pretty and nothing else. When I hear it, I hear familiar things from other songs, a frankensteined mass of other existing works taken without the knowledge or consent of the original artists responsible. Thats different from taking influence or inspiration from a different work, or in the case of a song, a remix. This just feels like something that looks like it has substance but really doesnt because it wasnt made by itself with any thought or intent. Its a machine coldly and soullesly regurgitating something from the backs of actual artists on an assembly line. But I dont need to tell you that. I get using this to spark discussion and debate, and thats totally fair, but I just feel that the complaints about this and the issues that come up have been heard from here all the way to Timbuktu. AI already has its place in society. It was never meant to replace artists.
