Not only one take... from an interview that the Professor of Rock did with Eric Burdon (Lead vocals), they were in the middle of opening for Chuck Berry on tour in England. They had Sundays off, so they booked time in studio, loaded up all their equipment after a gig, took a train to London, unloaded all their equipment (liberating a railwayman's barrow), hauled it in the early morning hours in London to the studio, set up their equipment, did one sound-check, one run-through, one take, loaded up the equipment, took a taxi back to the train station, loaded the train, and left for the next gig on Chuck's tour in Southhampton.

The Animals were a great group that was part of the 1960's British invasion onto the Rock scene. This song done back in 1964 is just one of social consciousness songs that many groups were writing about then. I cannot believe its been 56 years since I first heard this song back in 1964 as a ten year old boy. Now that I am a 66 year old senior citizen...The song still rocks me to my core. I consider the music of the 60's as the greatest decade in rock and roll history. Great post and reaction.

Amazing how many “reaction videos” there are to this song from’64. The set, the suits, the stone cold stare and performance by Eric Burden. the keyboard player alan price was really groundbreaking at the time [1964] because up until then the organ just wasn't heard in rock songs. he MADE it cool. and he is still around at 78 years old. wow where has time gone ? i was 11 when this song came out and it was responsible for us starting our first junior high rock band 2 years later. playing bass still !

The bass player for The Animals was Chas Chandler. He was the manager/producer for Jimi Hendrix early in Jimi's career. He saw Hendrix play in a small club in New York and convinced him to go to England where Hendrix became a star.

In the late 40s, a man would go through the South and ask people for any folk songs they knew and record them. A black woman said she remembered a song her mother told her when she was young, and out of her mouth came these lyrics as straight and as pure and TOTALLY unknown to anyone at the time. As they say, you can look it up.

Fab Gear - The song is a very old Blues/Folk traditional that possibly originated in England with different lyrics, though a similar theme. It was being performed in the US as early as the 1850s. It's been recorded by several artists before The Animals, including Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, and Bob Dylan. During the huge Folk music movement in the UK (they called it Skiffle) of the late 1950s, Lead Belly's large catalogue of music was heavily mined by the acts of the day. Most likely, this is where The Animals heard it and adapted it into their Blues Rock style. The House of the Rising Sun is basically, a brothel, and the song has also been sung as a warning to young girls that it's not a place to end up. In this case, the House has been frequented by the person in the song and has led him down a path of ruin and self-destruction. It's exactly the right sounding song for The Animals, reflecting their early life growing up in the coal based area of their native Newcastle. The song is about a brothel in New Orleans named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. Great song

R.I.P. Keyboard player Alan Price has a fear of flying, and as he travelled the world performing his 60s hits he was gripped with the constant fear of flying. He had to have a shot of vodka before he could even step on a plane.“I once did a tour of 70 cities so that meant 70 vodkas!” said Alan, whose keyboard wizardry turned the Animals into a household name. It was one of the reasons he left the band in 1965.

I remember going to school the day after first hearing this, and we were so excited by this song. 1965(ish)... I was 16, 71 now... and it was so different. In Britain we had only Radio Luxembourg for pop music, where they only played the first 80 seconds of records in half hour programmes, and most sings were little over two minutes. This was around four and a half minutes long. It was amazing! It's a relatively simple pattern of 7 in 6/8 time (1, 2 and 3, 4, 5, 6)... You could waltz to it! In fingerstyle guitar it ranks as a "Beginner" song, but you can't help but hear the organ and Eric belting out that lyric, and you just feel like a god!

60s classic rock is a golden era, like mid to late 90s hip hop. There is a gold mine of great music in both eras. You cant go wrong diving down a rabbit hole of either.

The Animals were a British band, took an American folk song, The House of the Rising Sun, about a girl, a prostitute, changed the lyrics to tell the story of a young man's ruined life and did the old folk song proud! Leadbelly, the Black folk singer, has a video on you-tube with the original lyrics, how it was sung over a century ago. The prostitutes in the 'red light districts' put red lamps in front of their houses, thus the house of the rising sun. The young man in the song committed a crime because he was going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain, go to prison. The prison guards would fit a heavy metal ball on a length of chain on a convict's leg to deter break outs. Sad, powerful song, a favorite back in the day. I'm glad I lived long enough to see you tube and the archival videos like Leadbelly's. We had only printed songbooks in the '60s telling the story of the songs and singers. What DID we do before you tube and the web??? I'm 72 and I can't really recall a world before my one-eyed babysitter, my computer. When I was in grade school, I asked a teacher if Marco Polo's stories about the Mongolian people who hunt with golden eagles was true. She didn't know. One of the first things I looked up on the web nearly 20 years ago was about those eagle hunters. They are real! And they still catch the wild eagles, train them and hunt with them before they release them back into the wild. Speak about a Fairy Tale coming true!!! Wow, oh, wow!. This clip was made in 1964 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this performance and a few other top UK only music artists when the film was made. KZbin has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience. A KZbin search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments : @ The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film. In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour. So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. Sound quality irrelevant as a better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source. These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records. Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories.

An English group that knew and lived the "Blues" back in the early sixties. This song was "my' song" in my first group. I was a B3 organist and singer... and this was my favorite. Eric Burdon was the leader and lead singer for the "Animals" and also a group called "War". That organ solo was top notch for it's time and blended a little classical with blues!
