I have only just started out blacksmithing a few weeks ago, I have made 60 pieces to date, with every piece I craft I can see my skill level refine, To me, forging metal is magic, you have inspired me for many years. I am starting to understand control of my blows, angles, heat, swings, breathing, tools and metals and make it all come together as one. The first day I started I got blisters, had a sore body head to toe, it has been all with the process of learning the craft of blacksmithing. I hope to one day make this my occupation. I have started out with a cost of around $300, all my steel so far has been salvaged, including the steel roof, and wood to build my shop. Its a great feeling to reuse steel that other people throw away and turn into something profitable or giftable. Thanks John for all your knowledge, hard work and dedication to your craft.

@@BlackBearForge I'm hoping to make a few of these for Christmas gifts. So I just now viewed this again. I made one at the time you first posted, I used 3/4 since that was what I had. I think I'm going to make some kind of hardy tool to help.

Wow, that was an oldie but a goody. II have never seen that before. Ingenious fellas those early blacksmiths that invented these in the first place. Thank you for demonstrating this design...

Awesome bit of forging magic. I’m lieu of having a jig for bending square on the diamond, try putting a hardwood branch in your vise with a v cut into it. Bends nice with no damage

Thanks John, you keep me thinking. I would note that the Colorado Smith network is very good at getting their membership involved. Maine has a lot of talented smiths but getting together is challenging. Time and distance are the culprits, not enough of the former and too much of the later. Thanks again, Peter

Very interesting design. Kudos to Matt and yourself. I wonder if you could make a set of dies for the press that would do all the indention's on both sides in one press.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
I suspect dies would make something similar but probably not exactly the same. Plus its not that time consuming to do it this way.

Very cool project! And way easier than I would have imagined. Another nice video John. Btw, I notice that you always get hundreds of thumbs ups on these great videos, but there always seems to be one jackwagon that gives you a thumbs down 🤔... I guess “Mr Tarantino” is just not a fan of your films. 😁

This is very cool. Since you are using Matt's design, I guess I should also ask if I can use your/Matt's work in lessons with military and first responder personnel. I think I can hammer one of these things out, then I would like to offer it in my free classes.

That's such a cool looking hook! I have a quick, unrelated question...any advice/safty concerns about a small outdoor charcoal forge made from a truck wheel lined w/be brick and mortar?
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
As long as you have a clear area to avoid starting a fire with sparks or embers you should be fine. What that clear area needs to be just depends on what vegetation is around and how dry it is.
@brittinghammerforge94413 жыл бұрын
I like that pattern. I think I will use it on some octopus legs.

Great opportunity to talk about the benefits of gas and coal forges. You wouldn’t have been able to heat small sections of that for straightening in a propane forge!
