Remind me, when Dan tests these, does he just manually plug in a bunch of values until he finds the best result for a given indicator?

I've wondered this as well, but I found that you can optimize these indicators in the MT4 strategy tester... but even then, optimizing indicators carries with it it's own issues.

There's an optimizer on the tester.

It's possible to code an optimizer tool so it runs an algo that tests variations of settings across thousands of simulations to find what seems like the best settings. Then you backtest it to make sure it arrived at good ones without overfitting, and forward test it over time. DavidDTech has a similar optimizer that he runs in trying to find good NNFX indicators and trading algos. It's a matter of partly automating the process and then backtesting (and then forward testing) but in finding what settings work best for what assets it's done via coded simulation in the optimizer's programming.

1 year and 3 months can be considered statistically irrelevant for robustness.
