The simplicity and introspection expressed by the words and character of the melody gives the song its power. A stadium rock backing pulls it in a different emotional direction and audience. Something's lost and something's gained. As a native Gael, brought up in that musical tradition, Maureen Hegarty's version hits home far more for the same reasons she sang it the way she did. I make no excuses for my culture, but I do not feel it worthy to "flame" anyone else for theirs. Peace.

@KaptKan1 you misunderstand her if you think she is demented. She has passion for expressing truth above all, even if that truth is misunderstood by others. You should educate yourself about her more. But it seems you have heard her true spirit come thru on this album, but she has MANY. She has an amazing body of work, and is a genuine example of a human being.

I really like Sinead on some of her songs but I think she murdered this beautiful, tender old song. Not many people can sing this song, but if anyone would like to hear a beautiful version that isn't overdone, I'd suggest Roisin O'Reilly .

If u don't think this is a political song then I believe you can only half enjoy it. Listen to words like "steal" and "creep" and imagery like insects, undergrowth and mist. To me it spells out the need for stealth and living in the shackles of oppression. Importantly though, the oppressed are fighting back " in sweet and undertones the song of hearts desire" In my opinion this is a rebel song.

@ulstermourne You have to be kidding. Not even close to the best. She needs acoustics to help her. Listen to Dusty Springfield, Kate Bush & the Corrs. This song was never meant to be a upbeat rock type song. Oh, by the way, even Sinead would tell you that her Idol was Dusty Springfield.

Sinéad and her band have lost so much of the longing and beauty of this song. It works OK for a pop/world audience but very much misses the mark on a Gaelic cultural level. I acknowledge that she is a very talented artist nonetheless and no disrespect intended.

Holy crap! This is supposed to be a love ballad and she sounds like she wants to beat the crap out'a whoever she's singing about! No thanks, I'll stay with Lynn Hilary of Celtic Woman rendition. Christ, at least Lynn sounds like she loves the person the song is about.
