I've always love history, geography, politics, and all of that sort of thing. Nobody really shared my opinion and interest except for my closest cousin, whom I don't get to see often. I've always loved to draw soldiers, uniforms, and most of all, maps. My and my cousin made up this world we call Vastlum. It's full of nations based off of the real world and referencing other existing imaginary nations alike. We put time and dedication into this, like full-fledged lore. I created this side story kind of thing involving navy, ships, pirates, etc. Naval vessels have always fascinated me. When I found this song, I absolutely loved it. Its a mix of German marches and pirate shanties! Who doesn't love it? I created a ship in itself after listening to this. I called it the Dreadnaughtiler, and it was the biggest and most powerful nuclear-powered battle vessel made by human hands in Vastlum. Since my family is mostly girls, and I'm not gay or anything related, I have really no one to relate with. So, I'm left with my thoughts and imagination. I would listen to this and mouth the lyrics perfectly on car rides in the far back seat. It literally makes me want to be a pirate myself, no matter the consequences. Hopefully one day, I'll take this Vastlum and make it go big. Thanks for this masterpiece, Karl!

- odpowiada przewodniczka. Imagine being a Hanseatic League sailor, and seeing that blood-red ensign of Klaus Störtebecker's ship bearing down on you, then having those madmen heave to and board your ship. The only thing scarier than the sound of accordions and that distinctively German "HA HA HA HA!" would be if Kapitan Störtebecker himself was followed by a rather burly, bespectacled first mate, who shouted joyfully, "Let me show you its features!" A couple thing puzzle me about this rather charming sea chanty, though. First, was this song really written during the Great War, or does it really date back to Störtebecker's time (since it is more about the legendary privateer himself than any WWI battle)? Second, the line "Wir sind the Hölle von Helgoland" is an interesting pun that doesn't quite work in German, since "hell" in German is "Hölle" and sounds nothing like the first syllable of "Helgoland." That pun would only make sense to English-speakers, which makes it even more interesting. Finally, could the line "Das Kreuz des Pfaffen ist fehl am Ord" be translated, "The priest's cross has fallen overboard?" I haven't studied German in over 10 years.
@eldritchgod43082 жыл бұрын
A year late but oh well, The song, if I read correctly, was written ca. 1924 by Walter Göttke The line “Wir sind die Hölle von Helgoland” could simply mean that the crew (who is implied to be singing this) bring hell to the seas of heligoland. And the line “Das Kreuz des Pfaffen ist fehl am Ort” simply reinforces the narrative that Störtebecker’s crew are the “hell” of heligoland (Remember, “Den Teufel haben wir selbst am Bord” meaning “We have the Devil himself aboard”)
@zymelin21 Жыл бұрын
"The Priest's cross is at the wrong place". And maybe rember the end of Claus Störtebecker. He was caught (finally) by the Royal Navy. Not hung as would normally be his fate, but handed over to the Senate of Hamburg or Bremen (both hanseatic states) to be beheaded. before his, and his shipmates execution he asked the excecutioner to pardon his crewmates for so long time as he could keep his head on his shoulders after the sword had fallen!!
