Reminds me of marching to Civil War events in the South. We were 300 yards from Spotsylvania Courthouse, and they had to stop traffic on the highway for the Union Army of 1000s to cross while singing Battle Cry of Freedom. I was in a week long campaign in Arkansas where we marched all over the countryside. And you saw Confederate flags flying from a few homes. One house let us fill up our canteens from their front yard hose. One guy bought a live chicken from a farmer and hung it from his pack for authenticity. I often wondered how many people, when stopped so the Union Army can cross the street, think "Damn Yankees! They are still a pain in the rear 150 years later."
@LEGIO_XXI_RAPAX Жыл бұрын
We also have a story with chicken. In i think Trier or Coln, we tried once to go in reenacment of Roman religious sacrifice of chicken. But the owners of museum doesn't accept It. But at least, we tried to be as authentict as we could.

Roman soldiers did wore crests on their helmets even in battle not just on parades.In different eras of the Roman army we are better or worse informed about this.In times of punic wars each helmeted legionary wore three feathers on top of it(two purple,one black).During early imperial times legionaries most likely also used it even in battles since we have it clearly visible on several original depictions from that time but problematically several other depictions from the same time shows them without crests so exact mechanism in early imperial army about how they used crests and when are not know since no written description about this survived.Collumn of Trajan shows no crests on Roman helmets(minus one scene outside of combat) but in direct contrast Collumn of Marcus Aurelius do show crests on Roman helmets almost universally in any situation-including combat.Some preserved helmets from this times do have signs of crest attachements but many others lacks any signs of this(although modern reconstruction shows that it was possible to instal crests on these helmets even without need to have some crest holders build directly into helmet body).When Emperor Vitelius triumphally marched to Rome his Centurions are mentioned to have white crests on helmets,the fact that Tacitus speciffically mentions it perhaps signify that it was special color meant for the occassion(white being the main color of Roman festivities).In late antiquity soldiers are almost always depicted with crests on their helmets in combat and they are likewise mentioned in combat in written sources of that time.Military manual Strategikon says helmet of each infantryman and cavalryman was adorned with small plume and Vegetius mentions that special transverse oriented crest of Centurions(used in battle as other mark beside unit standard to follow) was "silvered".We sadly dont know what exactly was silvered and more interpretations are possible.
