The Chettiars played a major role in building Singapore into a Financial Centre today.
During early British rule it is not easy to get business loans from the majority British banks for small businesses and investors. Famous business man, Tan Kah Kee built his business empire with some funding from the Singapore based Chettiars,(or Nagarathars) whose main business is money lending. And often the community conducted their business with strict rules that they had set themselves in business centres called "kitangis", where they live and work. Often they leave their families in India and live within a community of colleagues and their faith in close proximity to a temple they built at Tank Road, Singapore. Kitangis also existed in many cities like Malaysia and even Rangoon and Saigon.
