Malay epok-epok has other variations of fillings like epok-epok sayur (bean sprout and tofu filling, that you need to bite abit to create hole and pour the chilli in), scrambled eggs (its hard to find, I had to request my mom to make for me). Oh and the Indian karipap (the best is at Onan Rd) needs to be soaked in the chilli sauce until the pastry is soggy and eat it. The chilli sauce brings out the flavours of the karipap. Enjoy!

I always love the Malay epok epok especially the sardine ones. 3 for $2. Even in my teens, in school during recess time instead of eating noodles we always buy the epok epok from the Malay vendor. They had the bean sprouts type. Eat it with chillie sauce pumped into it. I also love the Indian triangular karipup.

Yes those with bean sprouts in them .. the Indian ones demand acquired taste , most come with potatoes skins intact though I'm very fond of some that have muttons in them.

U can also get freshly hand make epok epok at Eunos Malay Hawker stall for 50cts per piece. It does taste equally good and value for money. Another Malay stall are sell 3 types of epok epok fillings (curry potatoes, sardines and bean sprouts with chilli sauce). Another recommendation is Four Leaf Bakery Curry puff at $1.5/- per piece. Very nice puffy pastry fills with curry potatoes and chicken meat. I usually buy extra and keep it in the fridge and then toast in oven before eating it.

Of the 2 no. 1 choice, I would prefer the one from the Hawker centre, as it is value for money. 65 years ago, in the Kampong (Malay Village) where I stayed, Epok-epok was sold by Malay hawkers, the pastry and shape is still the same as it is now. (Cresent shape), but the fillings were just taugeh(bean sprouts), and the hawker will fill the insides with a dose of chilli chuka (vinegar chilli). At that time, I prefer the Indian Triangular Currypup. (kids dont like sour stuff) . Then some genius, did a fusion, and replace the taugeh with the curry potato fillings, and I got the first taste at Selera opposite Rex theatre. (long before Old Chang Kee was known).

@@AsiaHikelopedia I grew up in Kampong Amber, when Singapore was still a British colony, and the Epok-epok was bought at 2 piece for 1 cent (square copper coin) Kampong Amber was bounded by East Coast Road, extension of Haig Road and Tanjong Katong Road towards the sea. Of course these were dirt road, which has no name then, maybe you can see them in one of your earlier maps shown in your channel.

Hi Richard, i recommend you to try out AMK Curry Puff at AMK blk 722, it was opened by Tip Top Curry Puff founder relative before it was sold to ABR Holdings! They have another outlet at BIk 184 Toa Payoh Central also.
