Trying a new kind of concept diner which doesn't seem to have any staffs around.
You won't need to interact with another human to order or pick up your food.

Deliveroo is a service that gets food for you from restaurants that normally don't deliver, kind of an uber for food. So basically you have to assume full sit down restaurant prices with a small surcharge. I think this place is just a central collection point where you can get your order and eat it too.

When I was a kid we had these places called automats. You went in looked through all these little windows, paid with coins, door unlocked, you got your food. No servers or cashiers. We come full circle.
@mordeys

that's what i was going to say. auto-mats were all over the place in larger towns. you walk past, see something you like and put a coin or token in to open the little window. you take your food and the cooks behind the wall fill it with another dish. i would love to see those come back. i think it would be fun.

I think about this a lot actually. If you take a look around, the VAST majority of shit we have today - which we ironically deem futuristic - was something that was around *decades* ago, but was seen as so useless, unnecessary and over-the-top that societies largely had zero interest in them. But thanks to decreasing cost in technology and rising acceptance of throwaway culture, they've suddenly turned into very appealing options. Cars are one of the best showcases of this behavior; GPS, touchscreens, push to start, etc. were all implemented decades before they became mainstreams (PTS buttons have been around *for a century* actually, being an option on the Model T)

I think it wouldn't work in most American cities. However, in places like New York it could work because you have enough clientele to utilize the machine. These machines could work in malls too but like I said it would have to be where the foot traffic is. If you have a dead or dying mall it wouldn't work.
@retromoviefan944
@retromoviefan944 4 жыл бұрын
yep, we have too many thugs in our cities who would kick the machines in or break into them. There's have to be 24/7 security just to keep the gang bangers from tearing them open. That's why this stuff won't work in places like Vegas or Los Angeles.....just nasty types living there.

Annie onymouse it was also a problem due to inflation, as back then there weren’t electronic bill acceptors so you could only pay with coins and you would need like 20 quarters to pay for a $5 item. It could come back today, but currently no one in America has tried it again yet.

I could see this being really nice for airports or a 24-hour diner during slow/night hours, but if this became widespread I feel like it's just a bit too impersonal and cold. It's an interesting idea, I'll give it that, but the entire place for me is just too quiet. The lack of staff besides what you don't see is also slightly concerning but who knows, maybe they have cameras or something in case anything bad happens.
@elizabethcoen
@elizabethcoen 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the airport bit. Places like this would be a major hit in some of the major international airports such as SFO, SJC, PHX, LAX, ect. It could work perfectly for passengers and crews with long layovers. Perhaps they could play music or have background noise play through speakers to help with the silence.

Oh this is at Alice@Mediapolis! Haha the moment I saw the curry beehoon I knew it was in Singapore The big deal about it is that the data collection. I thought $8.50 for the curry noodles was a good deal, looked like enough food for a whole day. That burger and fries is easily a meal for 2 calorie wise even if $12 each is a little pricey. The ice cream is what i'm really confused about, $23 for two pints of ben and jerry's??? If i saw that i'd think it was a glitch because it makes zero sense.

I barely remember the restaurants they had in the USA called Automats. I was about 4 or 5 and the big bus station had them. Each freshly made dish was in a little cubbyhole and you put in the coins to open the door to get the treat. Anything from salad to sandwiches, desserts, main dishes or fruit and vegetables. The cooks behind the panel kept the cubbies stocked as the items disappeared. Drinks I think were served at a counter. I remember a trip to see Grandma where I got the "traveler's fruit bag" and thought it so fun to put coin in and get the clear bag of a shiny red apple and cold grapes.

Curious to know where all the people who say this is expensive live. As in which country? In Australia this is what we would normally pay. Singapore prices are actually the same as you would pay in Australia. To us it's not expensive, it's what we normally pay, so it surprises me that people are saying that it's expensive. I've been to Norway, Sweden and Denmark .... if you want to know what expensive really is, go to those countries. I think I paid around AUD $35 for a burger, fries and coke in Denmark. Because they are wealthier countries everything costs way more. Of course to the locals of those countries its normal pricing.

Umm, yeah. That's where traditional restaurants steps in to fill that demand, the place where you socialize with your family or friends? Well, unless presentation and quality are what you're looking for, this is the best place for those who don't wanna talk a lot or shy away from the others.

I think this kind of Diner Vending would go over very well in the states esp in intercity centers. Decades ago the US did try but it didn't go over very well only beacuse of the stigma around " vending machine food " is looked as bad or just junk food here in the states. But times have changed and I think this would go over well. After all. The first mondern food vending machine was located here in the US. The automat restaurants back in the mid 1900's! Look it up really cool concept that did lead the way to this.

I like the idea of automated restaurants and fast food. No spitting in your food, no racism, less screaming Karen customers, and no tipping required. Speed and consistency will improve. Food prices should also be cheaper in theory since the restaurant won’t have to pay staff.
